Chapter 7 - Everything Rachel Had Ignored

After Eric Voss was taken outside, Detective Hale escorted Rachel and Lily to an unmarked police vehicle.
Margaret waited behind her locked front door until an officer confirmed that it was safe. Then she hurried across the lawn and wrapped Rachel in a trembling embrace.
“I knew something was wrong,” Margaret said. “I should have called sooner.”
“You called in time.”
Lily climbed into the back seat with her rabbit.
Rachel sat beside her while officers searched the house.
Detective Hale remained outside the open car door.
“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you some questions.”
“Is Daniel watching us?”
“We don’t know where he is. Officers are looking for his vehicle.”
“He wasn’t on the plane?”
“No.”
Rachel showed him the photographs of the forged insurance document and the messages on the tablet.
Marcus read them silently.
His expression hardened.
“This is enough to obtain warrants for his accounts and communications.”
“Why would he do this?”
“I believe your husband is connected to financial crimes at his company. He may have intended to use the insurance payment to escape.”
Rachel looked at Lily.
The child was stroking one ear of her stuffed rabbit repeatedly.
Rachel had spent years protecting Lily from conflict. She never argued with Daniel in front of her. She explained away his cold moods and sudden anger.
Now she wondered what Lily had noticed in all that silence.
“Did Daddy want us to disappear?” Lily asked.
Rachel’s throat tightened.
Detective Hale crouched beside the open car door.
“Your father made dangerous choices,” he said gently. “But you and your mother did exactly the right thing. You listened, you stayed together, and you told the truth.”
“Will he come back?”
“The police are going to find him.”
Lily looked at Rachel.
“Are we going home?”
Rachel stared at the house.
The white front door remained open. Officers moved through rooms where she had celebrated birthdays, decorated Christmas trees, and imagined growing old.
It no longer felt like home.
“No,” Rachel said. “Not tonight.”
Marcus arranged for them to stay at a protected hotel while investigators processed the property.
An officer brought out the emergency backpack, purse, documents, and Lily’s purple sweater.
Rachel noticed another item inside the evidence bag.
A small recording device.
It had been found beneath Daniel’s office desk.
Marcus explained that it appeared to be voice-activated.
Daniel had used it to record business calls.
The device contained hundreds of files.
One of them had been recorded the previous evening.
In it, Daniel spoke with Eric.
He described the timing, the kitchen, the disabled alarms, and the payment.
His voice was clear.
So was the sentence that Lily had overheard.
“It has to look like an accident.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
There could be no more denial.
No misunderstanding.
No excuse.
Daniel had planned the deaths of his wife and child with the same calm voice he used to order dinner.
Marcus placed the recording device back into the evidence bag.
“This will help us find him.”
“How?”
“Daniel mentioned a second property. A lake cabin registered under a company name.”
Rachel opened her eyes.
She knew the cabin.
Daniel had taken her there once, years earlier. He claimed it belonged to a client.
She remembered a narrow road, tall pine trees, and a rusted green mailbox.

“I can show you where it is,” she said.
