Chapter 1 - The Perfect Departure

That morning had begun with pancakes.

Daniel Carter stood at the kitchen counter wearing a navy suit, flipping a pancake with one hand while checking his phone with the other. He had always enjoyed turning ordinary moments into performances.

“Blueberries for Lily,” he announced, placing a plate in front of his daughter. “And coffee for the most beautiful woman in Maryland.”

Rachel accepted the mug but did not smile.

For several weeks, something about Daniel had felt wrong.

It was not one dramatic incident. It was a collection of small things.

He had changed the password on his laptop. He had begun taking phone calls in the garage. He had installed a new security system and insisted that only he should manage the access codes.

He had also become unusually affectionate.

Every morning, he kissed Rachel’s forehead. Every evening, he brought home flowers or dessert. He asked whether she was happy with their life.

The attention would once have reassured her.

Now it felt like preparation for something.

Daniel crouched beside Lily.

“Daddy will be gone for four sleeps,” he said. “You take care of Mommy.”

Lily stared at him without answering.

Daniel’s smile weakened.

“What’s wrong, princess?”

“Nothing.”

Rachel noticed that Lily would not meet his eyes.

Daniel stood and picked up his travel bag.

“The driver’s waiting. My flight leaves at ten fifteen.”

Rachel walked him to the door.

“Send me a message when you land.”

“Of course.”

He kissed her cheek and stepped onto the porch.

Before he entered the waiting car, he turned and looked back at the house.

Not at Rachel.

At the windows.

At the roof.

At the home itself.

It was the kind of look someone gave a place they did not expect to see again.

Rachel watched the car disappear down the street.

When she returned to the kitchen, Lily was pushing blueberries around her plate.

“You didn’t say goodbye to Daddy,” Rachel said gently.

Lily’s face tightened.

“I didn’t want him to know I heard.”

“Heard what?”

The child looked toward the hallway leading to Daniel’s home office.

“Last night, Daddy was talking to a man.”

Rachel sat beside her.

“What did they say?”

Lily lowered her voice.

“Daddy said the camera had to stop working before lunch.”

Rachel tried to remain calm.

Daniel often spoke to contractors. The new security system had been unreliable.

“Maybe he was talking about fixing it.”

Lily shook her head.

“He said Mommy always cooks at twelve. Then he said today had to look like an accident.”

Rachel’s coffee cup slipped slightly in her hand.

“Are you sure those were his words?”

Lily nodded.

“He got mad because the man asked for more money.”

Rachel looked toward the security keypad.

Its green light was still glowing.

She told herself Lily could have misunderstood.

Children heard fragments and created stories around them. Daniel worked in commercial insurance. He regularly discussed accidents, investigations, and payments.

There had to be an innocent explanation.

Then the security keypad beeped.

The green light changed to red.

A message appeared on the small screen.

SYSTEM DISCONNECTED.

At that exact moment, Daniel sent Rachel a text.

Boarding now. Love you both.

Rachel stared at the message.

Then she looked through the kitchen window.

A gray maintenance van had just parked behind the house.
