Chapter 7 - A Father Returns
After Javier and Carmen were taken downstairs for questioning, the apartment became quiet again.
Paramedics examined Sofia and recommended that she go to the hospital. She agreed only after Elena promised to remain beside her.
Alexander rode in the ambulance.
For most of the journey, he said nothing.
Sofia watched him from beneath a blanket.
“You were right,” she whispered.
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“I should have listened.”
“This is not your fault.”
“I defended them. I pushed you away.”
“You trusted someone you loved. He chose to betray that trust.”
Sofia looked toward the ambulance doors.
“I thought you wanted to control my life.”
“Sometimes I did.”
She turned back toward him.
Alexander looked older beneath the harsh lights.
“After your mother and I divorced, I was terrified of losing you,” he admitted. “The more distance you created, the more questions I asked. I thought information could protect you.”
“It only made me feel judged.”
“I know that now.”
Sofia swallowed.
“Why didn’t you tell me about the investigation?”
“Because much of it was confidential. And because when you told me to stay out of your marriage, I tried to respect your decision.”
“You still investigated them.”
“I reviewed public records. Then I gave the information to people who had legal authority to continue.”
Sofia almost laughed, but tears came instead.
“You’re impossible.”
“Yes.”
Alexander reached carefully for her hand.
This time, she let him hold it.
At the hospital, detectives took Sofia’s statement. Teresa, the hotel employee, confirmed that she had helped Sofia escape. The emergency operator preserved the call recording.
The hotel initially claimed that several hallway cameras had malfunctioned.
Alexander immediately requested the maintenance logs.
They showed no reported failures.
A junior security technician later admitted that his manager had ordered him to disable access to several recordings after receiving a call from Carmen’s assistant.
Fortunately, the footage had already been backed up automatically to an off-site server.
The investigators recovered it before sunrise.
Javier hired an attorney and claimed he had misunderstood what was happening inside the suite.
Carmen denied touching Sofia.
Both statements failed quickly.
The emergency call captured Carmen demanding a signature and Javier refusing to open the door.
The hallway footage showed Javier standing outside for nearly six minutes while Sofia screamed his name.
He never attempted to enter.
He never called security.
He never called for help.
Instead, he sent three text messages to Carmen.
The first said, “She knows it transfers the deed.”
The second said, “Don’t let her leave without signing.”
The third said, “Police may be coming.”
Investigators obtained the messages through a warrant.
By the following afternoon, Sofia’s wedding had become a criminal investigation.
Yet the most damaging evidence was not what had happened in the bridal suite.
It was what investigators found inside Carmen’s leather folder.
The quitclaim deed contained a notarization dated three days before the wedding.
Sofia had supposedly signed it in front of a notary she had never met.
The signature was a forgery.
