Chapter 5 - The Locked Bridal Suite

The elevator ride to the bridal suite felt longer than the ceremony.

Sofia stood between Javier and Carmen without speaking.

When the doors opened, Javier did not follow them into the suite.

“I need to handle something downstairs,” he said.

Sofia looked at him.

“What?”

“A problem with the final payment.”

“At midnight?”

Carmen opened the suite door.

“This will take five minutes.”

Sofia stepped inside.

Before the door closed, she turned back.

Javier was still standing in the hallway.

Their eyes met.

Then Carmen shut the door.

The soft click of the lock sounded unnaturally loud.

Carmen placed the leather folder on a table.

“Sit down.”

“I’m not signing anything.”

“You haven’t read it.”

Sofia opened the folder and scanned the first pages. Catering balances. Photography releases. Vendor confirmations.

Then she reached the quitclaim deed.

Her name appeared beneath a paragraph transferring all interest in the condo to the Morales Family Marital Trust.

Sofia stared at it.

“This isn’t routine.”

“It is temporary.”

“This transfers ownership.”

“Only technically.”

“There is no such thing as technically surrendering a deed.”

Carmen’s expression changed.

The affectionate mother-in-law disappeared.

In her place stood a woman accustomed to controlling every room she entered.

“Our company requires collateral.”

“No.”

“Javier’s future depends on this.”

“Then Javier should have told me the truth.”

“He tried to explain.”

“He asked me to risk my home. He never told me your company was in trouble.”

Carmen’s eyes narrowed.

“Your home? You married my son tonight.”

“That does not make my property yours.”

Carmen stepped closer.

“You selfish little girl.”

Sofia closed the folder.

“I’m leaving.”

Carmen blocked her path.

“Sign the document.”

“Move.”

“You have enjoyed our family name, our guests, our influence, and a wedding that cost more than most people earn in a lifetime.”

“I never asked for this wedding.”

“You accepted it.”

Sofia reached for the door.

Carmen grabbed her arm.

The movement was sudden enough to tear the lace at Sofia’s shoulder.

“Let go of me.”

“You will not ruin my son’s future because your father taught you to distrust everyone.”

Sofia pulled away.

Her bracelet caught against Carmen’s ring and snapped. Diamonds scattered across the carpet.

Sofia rushed toward the door.

It did not open.

Carmen had engaged the interior security latch.

Sofia pounded against the wood.

“Javier!”

Footsteps stopped in the hallway.

She could see his shadow beneath the door.

“Javier, open it!”

He did not answer.

Carmen seized the folder and pushed it against Sofia’s chest.

“Sign.”

Sofia threw it aside.

Pages spread across the floor.

Carmen grabbed her again. Sofia stumbled against a table, knocking over a champagne glass. The front of her gown caught on a metal edge and tore.

The pain frightened her less than the silence outside.

“Javier!” she screamed.

His voice finally came through the door.

“Just sign it, Sofia.”

Everything inside her stopped.

The man who had promised to stand beside her in every storm was waiting for the storm to break her.

Carmen reached for her wrist.

Sofia twisted away and pressed the emergency button on her smartwatch.

The device began calling emergency services.

Carmen saw the glowing screen.

Her face changed.

She lunged for Sofia’s arm.

Sofia backed toward the bathroom, raising the watch near her mouth.

“My name is Sofia Reyes,” she said quickly. “I’m locked in the bridal suite at the Laurent Hotel. Someone is trying to force me to sign over my property.”

Carmen struck the watch away.

May you like

It hit the carpet.

But the call remained connected.
