Chapter 1 - The Apartment That Was Hers

Six months before the wedding, Sofia Reyes stood alone in her unfinished apartment and watched the city lights appear one by one.
The forty-second-floor condo was not merely expensive property. It represented eleven years of work.
Sofia had begun her career as a junior commercial architect in a cramped office with broken air-conditioning. She had worked nights, accepted difficult projects, and eventually become one of the youngest partners at her Dallas firm.
When a development company offered her an equity share instead of a traditional bonus, she took the risk. The project succeeded, and Sofia used her earnings to purchase the apartment without help from either parent.
Her mother, Elena, had cried when Sofia received the keys.
Her father had simply examined the documents and asked whether she had purchased additional title insurance.
That was Alexander.
Practical. Careful. Emotionally impossible.
Sofia’s parents had divorced when she was sixteen. Alexander’s career in federal financial investigations had demanded secrecy, constant travel, and long absences. Elena had grown tired of living with a man who could not discuss his work and rarely arrived home when promised.
After the divorce, Sofia stayed with her mother.
Alexander called. Sofia answered less frequently as the years passed.
He sent birthday cards, attended graduations, and quietly paid for things Sofia had never requested. Yet every attempt at conversation seemed to become an interrogation.
Was her employer stable?
Had she reviewed her contracts?
Were the people around her trustworthy?
When Sofia introduced Javier Morales to him, Alexander’s first question had been about Javier’s family business.
Javier had laughed afterward.
“Your father treats dinner like a background investigation.”
“He does that with everyone,” Sofia replied.
Javier took her hand.
“Maybe he’s afraid you don’t need him anymore.”
At the time, the words had sounded compassionate.
Sofia did not realize Javier was teaching her to view her father’s concern as jealousy.
Javier was everything Alexander was not.
Warm. Charming. Effortlessly affectionate.
He sent flowers to Sofia’s office, remembered every important date, and listened when she spoke about architecture. He also understood luxury real estate through his family’s investment company, Morales Heritage Group.
His mother, Carmen, controlled the company.
Carmen appeared elegant, generous, and deeply devoted to her only son. She hosted charity galas, donated to hospitals, and seemed to know every powerful person in Dallas.
When Javier proposed during a private dinner on the rooftop of Sofia’s completed building, Carmen immediately offered to organize the wedding.
“We will make it unforgettable,” she promised.
Sofia believed her.
Only Alexander remained cautious.
Three days after the engagement, he asked Sofia to meet him for coffee.
“Do not combine your property with Javier’s family assets,” he said.
Sofia set down her cup.
“Congratulations would have been enough.”
“I am happy for you.”
“You don’t sound happy.”
Alexander hesitated.
“Carmen Morales has been involved in several companies that no longer exist.”
“Businesses fail.”
“They also move money.”
Sofia stood.
“This is why I stopped telling you things. You never trust anyone.”
Alexander looked up at her.
“I trust evidence.”
“And I trust the man I’m marrying.”
She walked away before he could answer.
Outside the café, Javier was waiting in his car.
When Sofia told him what had happened, he placed a comforting hand over hers.
“Your father doesn’t understand our family,” he said.
May you like
Then he looked toward the café window, where Alexander remained seated alone.
“But one day, he’ll understand that you chose me.”
