Chapter 9 - vivienne’s perfect story

Vivienne recovered before anyone else.
“A damaged recording proves nothing,” she said.
Anna removed the reel.
“It proves Edmund knew exactly what he was doing.”
“It proves an old man repeated accusations fed to him by a former nurse.”
Dr. Cole stepped forward.
“They were not accusations.”
Vivienne looked at him.
The doctor’s fear had changed into something more stable.
Shame.
“I altered the delivery record,” he said. “I signed the infant transfer order and accepted payment from Blackwood House.”
Vivienne’s eyes narrowed.
“You are sedated and confused.”
“I also kept copies.”
Claire turned to him.
“You told us Anna kept the copies.”
“She kept the originals. I kept proof that I was paid.”
“Where is it?”
“In a safe deposit box.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Have someone secure it.”
Vivienne laughed.
“You are all behaving as though a confession from a criminal makes Claire’s story true.”
Claire took out the forged letter.
“Then explain this.”
“I have never seen it.”
Daniel reached into his phone case and removed a folded paper.
Claire recognized her own handwriting immediately.
He handed it to her.
The letter claimed Claire had married Daniel for money and that the baby belonged to another man.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
“I never wrote this,” Claire said.
Daniel looked at Vivienne.
“You gave it to me.”
“I received it from Claire’s attorney.”
“She had no attorney.”
“You did not know that at the time.”
Lila moved quietly toward the library exit.
Anna blocked her.
“You were the one who delivered the letter to Geneva.”
Lila said nothing.
“Tell him,” Vivienne ordered.
Lila looked between them.
For years, she had existed as Vivienne’s shadow, carrying out instructions and absorbing blame before it could reach her employer.
Now the doors were guarded, the recordings had been found and Dr. Cole was speaking.
Lila’s loyalty began to crack.
“I delivered it,” she admitted.
Vivienne’s face hardened.
“Because you were told it came from Claire.”
“No. Because you paid me.”
The room became quiet.
Lila continued.
“You paid me to intercept Daniel’s messages, alter Claire’s contact information and arrange the transfer through Blackwood.”
Vivienne stepped toward her.
“You will regret that.”
“I already do.”
Marcus’s radio crackled.
Helen’s voice came through.
“The board vote is beginning.”
Claire checked the time.
Vivienne’s loyal directors were moving without Helen.
If they voted to reject the trust before Edmund’s recording reached the ballroom, Vivienne could challenge every order Claire gave inside the estate.
“We need to go,” Claire said.
Marcus spoke into the radio.
“Delay them.”
“I cannot. They have appointed an acting chair.”
“Who?”
“Robert Dane.”
Claire knew the name.
Robert had managed the foundation investments for fifteen years.
He had also approved every payment to Blackwood House.
Vivienne moved toward the library door.
Marcus stopped her.
“You are not going anywhere.”
“You cannot detain me.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Take Sophie and the evidence through the music gallery.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“You are not protecting me by standing here. You protect Sophie by putting Edmund’s recording in front of the board.”
Daniel nodded.
Sophie reached for Claire.
“You’re coming too.”
“I’m right behind you.”
“Bluebird?”
“Bluebird.”
Daniel took Sophie’s hand.
Anna carried the reel and recorder. Dr. Cole followed with Marcus.
Lila remained beside Claire and Vivienne.
When the others were gone, Vivienne’s expression changed.
The polished hostess vanished.
“You think you have won.”
“I think you are frightened.”
“I am not frightened of you.”
“You tried to auction a child’s necklace to stop her from opening a door.”
Vivienne stepped closer.
“You do not understand what Edmund discovered.”
“Then explain it.”
“He believed Blackwood House was created to hide stolen children.”
“It was.”
“No. It was created to hide Ashcroft children.”
Claire stared at her.
Vivienne lowered her voice.
“Edmund was not the first man in this family to have children the board considered inconvenient. Blackwood protected the inheritance from claims, scandals and bloodlines that could divide the company.”
“You call trafficking children protection?”
“I call it survival.”
“And my son?”
“Your son was a mistake Adrian was supposed to correct.”
Claire’s hands curled into fists, but she did not move.
“Is he alive?”
Vivienne smiled slightly.
“You have spent seven years mourning him. Are you certain you want a different grief?”
Claire took out her phone and showed the recording screen.
Vivienne’s smile disappeared.
“Everything you just said is saved.”
Vivienne reached for the phone.
Lila caught her arm.
“Enough.”
Vivienne stared at her assistant.
“You belong to me.”
“No,” Lila said. “That was the first lie you taught me.”
The library doors opened.
Robert Dane entered with two private guards.
He looked at Vivienne.
“The board has voted.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
Robert held up a document.
“The trust is rejected. Claire Bennett has no authority in this house.”
Vivienne smiled.
“Remove her.”
Robert’s guards stepped forward.
Then he turned the document around.
A red stamp covered the signature page.
Vote suspended for fraud review.
Vivienne’s smile vanished.
Robert looked at Claire.
“Helen showed us the deed. The board wants to hear the recording.”
Claire studied him.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
May you like
He glanced at Vivienne.
“But Edmund left me a letter too.”
