Chapter 8 - the father who knew too late

Daniel tore his jacket sleeve and pressed the fabric over Sophie’s nose and mouth.
Claire searched the walls for another exit.
“Anna, turn off the ventilation.”
“There is no control panel in here.”
The gas smelled faintly sweet.
Dr. Cole began coughing.
Daniel struck the hidden door with his shoulder, but it did not move.
Sophie pointed toward the floor.
“The locket.”
It remained inside the crest-shaped lock on the other side of the bookcase.
Claire dropped to her knees and examined the lower wall.
A thin line of light appeared beneath the projector cabinet.
She pulled it aside.
Behind it was a small iron lever.
Claire forced it down.
The projector screen rolled upward, revealing an emergency passage.
“Go,” Daniel said.
Claire guided Sophie through first.
Anna followed with the recorder and film reel.
Dr. Cole stumbled behind them.
Daniel entered last and pulled the lever from the other side.
A metal panel closed over the opening.
The passage led to a narrow observation balcony above the library.
From there, they could see Lila inside the hidden office.
She wore a respirator mask and stood beside the gas control.
Vivienne entered through the library.
“Did it work?” she asked.
“They will be unconscious within two minutes.”
“And the child?”
“The dose is low.”
Vivienne’s face remained cold.
“I did not ask whether it was low.”
Lila hesitated.
“She will survive.”
“Good. We still need her signature when the trust is transferred.”
Claire felt Daniel tense beside her.
Anna quietly activated the recorder.
Below them, Vivienne moved toward the hidden room.
“Once Claire is blamed for stealing foundation records, Daniel will take custody of the girl.”
“He does not know her.”
“He knows enough to feel guilty. Guilt is the easiest leash to hold.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Lila removed Sophie’s locket from the lock.
“And the second child?”
Vivienne turned.
“Adrian was instructed to deal with that problem years ago.”
“Did he?”
“If he had, Edmund would never have found Blackwood.”
Lila placed the locket in her pocket.
“The boy’s file is still missing.”
“Then find it before Daniel learns he has a son.”
A voice came from the library entrance.
“He already knows.”
Marcus stood in the doorway with two estate guards.
Vivienne turned toward him.
Lila reached for the gas control.
Marcus raised his radio.
“Do not touch it.”
Daniel pushed open the observation panel and climbed down the stairs.
Claire followed with Sophie.
Vivienne stared at them.
For the first time that evening, she looked afraid.
Daniel stopped in front of her.
“You stole my son.”
“I protected this family.”
“From a newborn baby?”
“From Claire. From a marriage that would have destroyed everything your father built.”
Claire faced her.
“You forged our letters.”
“You both believed them.”
“That does not make you innocent.”
“It makes you weak.”
Sophie stepped closer to Claire.
Vivienne noticed.
Her expression softened into a false smile.
“Sophie, none of this is your fault.”
“Give me my necklace.”
Vivienne’s smile faded.
Lila slowly removed the locket and placed it on the desk.
Sophie picked it up.
Daniel knelt and fastened it around her neck.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Sophie touched the photograph inside.
“Did you really not know?”
“No.”
“Grandpa knew.”
“He learned too late.”
Anna inserted the film reel into the projector.
The image of Edmund Ashcroft appeared on the wall.
He sat in the same hidden room, thinner than Claire remembered but fully alert.
The date in the corner showed the recording had been made nine months earlier.
Edmund looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Edmund James Ashcroft. I am making this record freely, without pressure or impairment.”
Vivienne moved toward the projector.
Marcus stopped her.
Edmund continued.
“My wife, Vivienne Ashcroft, has attempted to have me declared incompetent because I discovered that she diverted foundation money through Blackwood House and Saint Arden Hospital.”
Daniel watched without moving.
“Seven years ago,” Edmund said, “Vivienne separated my son Daniel from his wife, Claire. She concealed the birth of their daughter and arranged the unlawful transfer of their second child.”
Vivienne’s breathing became shallow.
The recording continued.
“I did not protect Claire when she came to my gates. I believed a lie because it was convenient. That failure belongs to me.”
Claire looked away.
“I cannot return the years taken from them,” Edmund said. “But I can return the power Vivienne used against them. Ashcroft Estate and my controlling shares will be held for Sophie and any other surviving child born to Claire Bennett during her admission to Saint Arden Hospital.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Edmund leaned closer to the camera.
“There is one further truth. The person directing Vivienne was not Lila Crane, Dr. Cole or Adrian Voss.”
The film flickered.
A shadow moved behind the camera.
Edmund turned suddenly.

The image shook.
Then the film burned white and stopped.
