Chapter 13 - the truth daniel must earn

Claire forced herself not to react.
Adrian wanted fear.
Vivienne wanted desperation.
Both would use any uncontrolled movement against Sophie.
“Let her go,” Claire said.
Vivienne leaned back in her chair.
“Bring the original trust to the east guest suite.”
“The board has copies.”
“The trust contains a handwritten amendment Edmund added before he died.”
Claire looked at Helen’s scanned version on the communications computer.
The final page contained a narrow strip of handwriting beneath the witness seals.
The original must be surrendered to activate the amendment.
“What does the amendment do?” Claire asked.
“You drafted it.”
“I did not draft that line.”
Vivienne smiled.
“Edmund learned not to trust you either.”
Claire looked at Marcus.
He silently pointed toward the ceiling.
There was a ventilation shaft connecting the communications room to the guest wing.
Anna understood.
She opened the maintenance panel.
Vivienne continued speaking.
“Bring the document alone.”
“You know I will not.”
“Then Sophie learns what happened to her brother without you.”
Adrian tightened his hand on Sophie’s shoulder.
Daniel shifted, placing himself between them as much as the restraints allowed.
“Do not touch her,” he said.
Adrian struck the back of Daniel’s chair with his palm.
The sound made Sophie flinch, but she remained unharmed.
Claire kept her voice steady.
“Sophie, look at me.”
The child faced the screen.
“Remember what we do when things feel too big?”
“Count what’s real.”
“Tell me five real things.”
Sophie swallowed.
“Daniel is here. I have my locket. You can see me. Mr. Voss is scared. And Vivienne is lying.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
Claire almost smiled.
“Very good.”
Vivienne closed the video feed.
Marcus entered the ventilation shaft with Anna behind him.
Claire turned to Lila.
“Can you keep the screen connected?”
“For a few minutes.”
“Play Vivienne a copy of the trust leaving the communications room. Make her believe I am coming through the main corridor.”
Lila nodded.
Claire took the original pages from the evidence bag Marcus had left on the desk.
She did not plan to surrender them.
Instead, she examined Edmund’s handwritten amendment.
Upon recognition of both surviving children, control passes to the appointed guardian until the younger reaches twenty-five.
The appointed guardian’s name was hidden beneath a sealed strip.
Claire peeled it back.
Marcus Vale.
Edmund had selected Marcus, not Claire.
For one painful second, she wondered whether Edmund had doubted her.
Then she understood.
If Vivienne killed or discredited Claire, the trust would pass to Marcus, who had already spent years searching for Samuel.
Edmund had created layers of protection.
Claire placed the page beneath the scanner.
“Send this to every board member and three independent news organizations.”
Lila stared at her.
“Once it is public, no one can destroy it.”
“Exactly.”
A message appeared on the monitor.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
The lights in the communications room shut off.
Claire heard movement behind her.
She turned.
Robert Dane stood at the bottom of the stairs holding a gun.
Lila raised both hands.
“You work for Vivienne?”
Robert closed the door.
“I worked for Edmund.”
“Then lower the weapon.”
“I cannot.”
He looked at the trust pages in Claire’s hand.
“Edmund’s amendment cannot be activated.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus Vale is not who Edmund believed he was.”
Claire thought of Marcus raising Samuel.
“What are you talking about?”
“Marcus worked at Blackwood House before his daughter adopted Samuel.”
Claire remembered Dr. Cole’s fear when Marcus’s name appeared in the locket.
“Was he part of the transfers?”
Robert nodded.
“He delivered children to private families.”
Lila whispered, “Vivienne knew.”
“Vivienne hired him.”
Claire looked toward the open ventilation shaft.
Marcus was already on his way to Sophie.
“Why would Edmund appoint him guardian?”
“Because Marcus convinced him he was trying to repair the damage.”
“Was he?”
“I don’t know.”
Robert’s weapon trembled slightly.
“My instructions were to prevent the amendment from becoming public until Marcus was investigated.”
“You are too late.”
A notification chimed.
The scan had reached the board and the press.
Robert closed his eyes.
Then a sound came from the ceiling.
Three sharp knocks.
A pause.
Two more knocks.
Morse code.
Marcus had used the pattern earlier with the security staff.
Room secure.
Claire moved toward the stairs.
Robert blocked her.
“Wait.”
A second message came through the ventilation shaft.
Four knocks.
Child safe.
Claire released a breath.
The east guest suite door opened on the live camera feed.
Marcus entered from behind the wall panel and disarmed Adrian before he could react. Anna pulled Sophie away.
Daniel drove his shoulder into Adrian’s legs, bringing him to the floor.
Vivienne ran toward the window.
The screen shook as guards entered from the corridor.
Claire looked at Robert.
“Now lower the gun.”
He did.
By the time Claire reached the guest suite, Adrian was restrained and Sophie was in Anna’s arms.
Claire crossed the room and held her daughter.
Sophie buried her face against Claire’s neck.
“You found me.”
“Always.”
Daniel stood nearby with a bruise along his jaw and his wrists freed.
He did not interrupt their embrace.
Vivienne was pressed against the window while two guards watched her.
She looked at Claire with pure hatred.
“You think this changes anything?”
“It changes where you sleep tonight.”
Police sirens approached the estate.
Vivienne looked toward Daniel.
“Tell her.”
Daniel’s expression became guarded.
Claire turned to him.
“Tell me what?”
Vivienne smiled.
“He knew I was investigating Claire before the hospital.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That is not what happened.”
“You gave me her medical schedule.”
“I gave the family office my travel dates and emergency contacts.”
“You gave me access.”
“I never gave you permission to hurt her.”
Vivienne looked at Claire.
“He wants you to believe he was only a victim.”
Claire faced Daniel.
“Were you?”
He did not answer immediately.
That hesitation was honest, and honesty hurt.
“No,” he said at last. “I was careless. I let my family handle parts of our life because conflict was inconvenient. I did not know what Vivienne would do, but I created the space for her to do it.”
Sophie looked at him.
“Are you going away too?”
Daniel crouched in front of her.
“Not unless your mother asks me to.”
Claire studied him.
He was not asking for forgiveness.
He was not claiming a place he had not earned.
For the first time, she saw the man he might become rather than the man she had once needed him to be.
“You will cooperate with the police,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“You will surrender every family record and account.”
“Yes.”
“You will not contact Sophie without my permission.”
Pain crossed his face.
But he nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophie touched his hand.
“You can call tomorrow.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
She gave one small nod.
“Tomorrow,” he said.
The police entered the room.
As an officer approached Vivienne, she laughed.
“You are all still looking at the wrong person.”
Claire held Sophie closer.
“Who directed you?”
May you like
Vivienne’s smile faded.
“The same woman Edmund spent his entire life protecting.”
