I NEVER RECEIVED A DOLLAR / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Envelope Marked for Lily

The encrypted document opened at midnight.

Emily sat at the kitchen table with Warren and Olivia.

Lily’s birth certificate lay beside the computer. The receiver had used its registration number, time of birth and hospital code to unlock Lydia’s file.

A single video appeared.

The date beneath it was three months earlier.

Emily’s hands went cold.

“That cannot be right.”

Olivia checked the file properties.

“The date is authentic.”

Warren lowered himself into a chair.

Emily pressed play.

The screen remained dark for several seconds.

Then Lydia appeared.

She was older.

Her hair had turned partly gray, and a thin scar crossed one eyebrow. But Emily recognized the way she tilted her head before speaking.

The same movement Emily saw in the mirror every morning.

“My dearest Emily,” Lydia said.

Emily stopped breathing.

“If you are watching this, you found the account, and your daughter has been born.”

Warren reached for the edge of the table.

Lydia continued.

“I am sorry for every year you believed I abandoned you. I stayed away because returning would have placed you directly in the path of the person controlling Richard.”

Emily looked at Olivia.

The video continued.

“Richard stole your money. Vanessa helped him. Elaine created the structure they used. But none of them began this.”

Lydia glanced away from the camera as though someone had entered the room.

She lowered her voice.

“The architect has access to Warren’s companies, the law firm, the banks and the original Hale family records. That person knew about Lily before you did.”

A sound came from somewhere beyond the camera.

Lydia reached forward.

The picture shook.

“Do not search for me until you find the document hidden inside the locket.”

The video ended.

Emily removed the silver locket from her neck.

She examined the photographs, the hinge and the metal frame.

Nothing appeared unusual.

Warren took it carefully.

“Lydia gave this to you when you were born,” he said. “She never allowed anyone else to open the back.”

Olivia brought a small tool from her evidence kit.

The inner frame lifted.

Beneath Lydia’s photograph was a narrow piece of paper folded into a space no wider than a matchstick.

Emily unfolded it.

The paper contained a list of dates and account codes.

At the bottom was an address in Chicago.

Warren recognized it.

“That building belonged to my father.”

“What is there now?” Emily asked.

“It was demolished twenty years ago.”

Olivia searched the address.

A photograph appeared.

The original building was gone, but a private data-storage center now stood on the property.

Its owner was an anonymous corporation registered in Luxembourg.

The incorporation date matched the day Lydia disappeared.

Emily examined the list again.

One line was written in different ink.

It contained Lily’s full legal name.

Beneath it were five words.

SHE IS THE FINAL BENEFICIARY.

A noise came from the front porch.

All three looked toward the door.

The security camera showed a woman standing beneath the light.

She wore a dark coat and held a blue legal folder.

Her face was hidden beneath a scarf.

Emily’s phone rang.

The caller ID displayed her own number.

She answered.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Lydia’s voice whispered through the phone.

“Do not open the door. The woman outside is not me.”

The porch light went out.

The camera feed turned black.

From Lily’s room came the soft sound of the window opening.
