Chapter 12 - The Hearing No One Expected

Richard and Vanessa were arrested two days later at a private airfield outside Milwaukee.
They carried false passports and nearly $600,000 in cash.
Their attorneys immediately claimed they had been traveling for business and knew nothing about the stolen trust funds.
An emergency civil hearing was scheduled to determine whether the frozen accounts would remain under court control.
The courtroom was filled before proceedings began.
Reporters occupied the back rows. Former Hale employees sat together near the aisle. Several women whose trusts had also been raided waited beside their lawyers.
Emily sat between Olivia and Mara.
Lily remained safely with Maya outside the courthouse.
Richard entered wearing a dark suit.
Vanessa followed him.
Neither looked at Emily.
Their attorney argued that Emily had voluntarily authorized Richard to manage her assets.
He produced copies of signed consent forms.
Olivia called Emily to testify.
“Have you ever signed a document granting Richard Hale control over your trust?”
“No.”
“Have you ever received a $250,000 annual payment?”
“No.”
“Did you know an account existed under your name?”
“Not until six weeks ago.”
Richard’s attorney stood.
“Ms. Carter, isn’t it true that you were estranged from your family?”
“Yes.”
“And that you refused contact with Warren Hale?”
“No. I was told he wanted no contact with me.”
“By whom?”
“Richard and Vanessa.”
The attorney displayed photographs from the charity galas.
“Is this you?”
“No.”
The courtroom stirred.
He tried another photograph.
Emily shook her head.
“That is not me either.”
The attorney looked toward Richard.
Olivia called the model from the photographs as the next witness.
She testified that a marketing agency paid her to attend events under the name Emily Carter. The payment came from Northbridge Consulting.
Daniel Ruiz then described the account history.
A handwriting specialist confirmed that Vanessa signed Emily’s name on the opening documents.
Finally, Samuel Price entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.
He identified the red ledger and explained how Richard moved trust money through shell companies.
Richard’s attorney attempted to discredit him as a former employee accused of theft.
Samuel looked directly at Richard.
“I was accused because I refused to destroy Lydia Carter’s records.”
Olivia placed the security footage on the courtroom screen.
Richard’s voice echoed through the room.
“You won’t reach tomorrow.”
Richard’s face remained still, but Vanessa turned toward him.
She had not known the recording existed.
The judge extended the asset freeze and transferred control of the trusts to an independent receiver.
Richard and Vanessa were prohibited from contacting Emily or any witness.
As court officers approached them, Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“I didn’t design the system.”
Her lawyer tried to stop her.
Vanessa ignored him.
“Richard received instructions. We both did.”
“From whom?” Olivia asked.
Vanessa looked at Mara.
“The woman who taught us how to make dead people sign documents.”
Mara stood.
“That is a lie.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Ask her where she was the night Lydia disappeared.”
Mara’s face turned pale.
The judge ordered everyone to remain in place.
Olivia leaned toward Emily.
“Mara told us she was in Washington that night.”
“She was,” Emily whispered.
“How do you know?”
Emily pointed toward the evidence screen.
In the corner of the estate footage, a television reflected in a window showed a live news broadcast.

The date displayed on the screen was not the date written in the security archive.
The footage had been deliberately mislabeled.
