Chapter 11 - The House of Locked Rooms

Police opened the storage unit that afternoon.
Emily, Warren, Olivia and Mara watched from behind the security line.
The metal door rose slowly.
Inside was a furnished room.
Not boxes.
Not old company records.
A desk stood against one wall. Shelves contained financial files. A narrow bed occupied the back corner. Canned food and sealed water bottles had been stored beneath it.
Someone had prepared the space for a person to remain hidden.
Emily stepped closer.
A photograph of her at age eighteen sat on the desk.
Beside it was a recording device.
Olivia wore gloves as she pressed the power button.
Lydia’s voice filled the unit.
“My name is Lydia Hale Carter. If this recording is discovered, Richard knows I uncovered the transfers.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Warren gripped the metal doorframe.
The recording continued.
Lydia explained that Richard had borrowed millions against family assets. When his investments failed, he began diverting money from trusts.
Vanessa created shell companies and false identities.
But Lydia believed someone inside the law firm designed the system.
“Richard is frightened of that person,” Lydia said. “I heard him call her the architect.”
The recording ended abruptly.
Emily searched the desk.
One drawer was locked.
The key card from the sedan opened a small electronic compartment beneath it.
Inside were copies of Warren’s letters to Emily.
Hundreds of them.
Some had never been mailed. Others had been opened and resealed. Notes written in Vanessa’s handwriting described how Emily might respond if Warren ever contacted her directly.
“She studied me,” Emily whispered.
“She created a version of you for Warren,” Olivia said.
Warren opened another box.
It contained photographs of Emily taken without her knowledge.
Her first apartment.
Her graduation.
Her job at the hotel.
Her pregnancy.
Lily’s birth.
Richard and Vanessa had known where she was the entire time.
“They watched her struggle,” Warren said.
Emily looked at one photograph taken outside the hospital.
Vanessa’s handwriting appeared on the back.
No intervention. Pressure will make her easier to control.
Warren sat down.
For the first time since Emily had returned, he looked old.
“I trusted them.”
Emily wanted to tell him trust did not erase responsibility.
But the regret in his face was not an attempt to escape blame. He understood what his distance had cost.
Olivia found a locked metal case beneath the bed.
Inside were passport copies, cash and a prepaid phone.
The phone contained only one saved contact.
ARCHITECT.
Olivia called the number using a secured police line.
The phone rang inside the storage facility.
Everyone turned.
A second ringing sound came from behind the wall.
Police removed a loose panel.
They discovered a narrow passage connecting the unit to another rented space.
Samuel Price was lying on the floor.
He was alive but weak.
An ambulance transported him to the hospital.
Before the doors closed, Samuel caught Emily’s hand.
“Richard didn’t take your mother,” he whispered.
“Who did?”
May you like
Samuel struggled to remain conscious.
“The woman with the bracelet.”
