Chapter 4 - The Evidence Hidden in Plain Sight
While Chloe was being transferred, Elena and the investigators began assembling the case.
The hidden folder on Chloe’s phone contained seventeen audio recordings.
In one, Julian threatened to have her declared unfit.
In another, he told her that the hospital would support whatever version of events he provided.
The most disturbing recording had been made six days earlier.
Julian’s voice was quiet and controlled.
“You will attend the board dinner, smile for the photographs, and stop talking about leaving. Your delivery is scheduled here. I chose the team. Do not make me decide how much effort they should use to save you.”
Chloe’s frightened voice followed.
“You’re threatening to let me die.”
“I’m explaining consequences.”
Elena removed her glasses and closed her eyes.
For one dangerous second, rage overwhelmed reason.
She imagined marching into Julian’s office and confronting him in front of everyone.
Then she remembered why men like Julian survived for so long.
They counted on emotional reactions.
They counted on missing records, confused timelines, and frightened witnesses.
Elena would not give him confusion.
She would give him evidence.
The cybersecurity team discovered that Julian had accessed Chloe’s records more than forty times without a treatment-related reason.
He had altered notes, removed references to earlier injuries, and downloaded private test results.
More serious irregularities soon appeared.
Julian had approved payments to consulting companies that existed only on paper.
Several were controlled by his associates.
Money intended for maternal-care programs had been redirected into private accounts and luxury properties.
The investigators also found complaints from nurses who had reported Julian’s behavior.
Those complaints had been deleted from the internal system.
One nurse, Maria Santos, agreed to speak with Elena privately.
“I saw Mrs. Mercer crying in the parking garage three months ago,” Maria said. “Her husband was standing over her. When he noticed me, he smiled and asked whether I enjoyed working here.”
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
“My supervisor said the camera had malfunctioned. The next week, I lost two shifts.”
Another nurse admitted that Julian had instructed employees never to leave Chloe alone with Elena.
A receptionist revealed that Julian received alerts whenever Chloe scheduled an appointment.
Piece by piece, the image became clear.
The abuse at home was supported by an entire system of surveillance and intimidation at work.
At 1:48 in the afternoon, the trust attorney arrived with emergency board resolutions.
At 2:03, the hospital’s banking access was restricted.
At 2:11, security disabled Julian’s executive key card.
At 2:17, the board voted unanimously to suspend him.
There was only one problem.
Julian had already received a call from Dr. Warren.
