Chapter 1 - The Last Ultrasound
Four hours earlier, Elena Hart had been helping her daughter change clothes for what should have been a joyful appointment.
The private room at St. Catherine was warm and softly lit. A framed painting of a mother holding a newborn hung above a cream-colored chair. Fresh flowers stood near the window.
Everything had been designed to make expectant mothers feel safe.
Elena would later remember the cruelty of that detail.
Chloe stood beside the examination table, trying to remove her blouse without lifting her arms too high.
“You should have called me sooner,” Elena said. “I would have driven you.”
“Julian said he would bring me.”
“But he didn’t.”
“He had a meeting.”
Elena folded Chloe’s coat and placed it on the chair.
“He always has a meeting.”
Chloe attempted a smile.
Her face looked thinner than it had two weeks earlier. There were shadows beneath her eyes, and makeup had been carefully blended along her cheek.
Elena had noticed the discoloration when Chloe arrived, but Chloe claimed she had walked into a cabinet door.
It was not the first unlikely explanation she had offered.
During the final months of the pregnancy, Chloe had become increasingly distant. She stopped answering calls after sunset. She canceled lunches without explanation. When Elena visited, Julian remained in the room and answered questions directed at Chloe.
Elena had tried to speak with her privately.
Julian always found a reason to interrupt.
That afternoon, however, he had been delayed.
Elena helped Chloe pull the blouse over her head.
The fabric slipped from Chloe’s shoulders.
Elena stopped breathing.
Dark bruises covered Chloe’s back and ribs.
Several marks formed partial patterns, wide and deliberate. One near her lower back resembled the edge of a heavy boot.
Chloe immediately pulled the blouse against her body.
“Mom, please.”
Elena felt something inside her collapse.
She had seen injuries during her years of charity work with women’s shelters. She knew the difference between an accident and repeated cruelty.
She also knew that panic would make Chloe retreat.
So Elena did not cry.
She did not shout.
She gently removed the blouse from Chloe’s trembling fingers and helped her into the medical gown.
“Did Julian do this?”
Chloe looked at the closed door.
Her silence answered.
Elena tied the gown at the back.
“How long?”
“Mom, please don’t ask.”
“I need to know how long.”
Chloe lowered herself onto the examination table.
“At first, he only grabbed me when he was angry.”
Elena sat beside her.
“And then?”
“He apologized. He said the hospital was under pressure. He said people were trying to destroy his career.”
“And then?”
Chloe stared at her hands.
“It became worse after I got pregnant.”
Elena had to force herself to remain still.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he controls everything here.”
“This hospital does not belong to him.”
“He says it does.”
“He manages it.”
“He says the board obeys him. He says every doctor in this city owes him a favor.”
Chloe’s breathing became unsteady.
“He told me that if I tried to leave, he would have me declared mentally unfit. He said he would take the baby.”
Elena reached for her daughter’s hand.
“He cannot do that.”
“You don’t know what he can do.”
“I know exactly what he can do.”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.
“No, Mom. You don’t. He chose the surgical team. He changed my records. He said if I embarrassed him, something could go wrong during the C-section.”
Elena felt cold from the inside out.
“Did he specifically threaten your life?”
Chloe nodded.
“He said I wouldn’t survive the delivery.”
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Chloe panicked.
“Don’t tell anyone.”
Elena squeezed her hand.
“I won’t leave you alone.”
Dr. Marcus Hale entered holding a tablet.
He smiled politely until he saw Chloe’s expression.
Then he looked at Elena.
Elena did not speak.
May you like
She only moved aside, allowing him to see the bruises that the medical gown could not fully conceal.
Dr. Hale’s smile disappeared.
