Chapter 2 - The Man Everyone Feared
Julian Mercer had not always appeared dangerous.
When Chloe first met him, he was a brilliant young surgeon with an easy smile and a reputation for saving difficult cases.
He listened when she spoke. He remembered small details. He sent flowers to Elena on her birthday before Chloe reminded him.
At their wedding, he promised to protect Chloe for the rest of his life.
For a while, she believed him.
The first warning signs were easy to excuse.
Julian disliked certain friends because he claimed they were jealous of the marriage. He discouraged Chloe from working because he said she deserved a comfortable life. He asked her to transfer her investments into joint accounts so they could build a future together.
Every request sounded reasonable by itself.
Together, they formed a cage.
After Julian became chief medical administrator at St. Catherine, his behavior changed quickly. He began speaking about loyalty as though it were a debt. Employees who disagreed with him were transferred or dismissed. Doctors who questioned his financial decisions found their schedules reduced.
At home, every conversation became a test.
If Chloe disagreed, she was disloyal.
If she cried, she was manipulative.
If she remained quiet, she was hiding something.
The first time he grabbed her wrist hard enough to leave marks, he bought her a diamond bracelet the next morning.
The second time, he blamed exhaustion.
By the time Chloe became pregnant, apologies had disappeared.
Julian also understood the power of reputation.
He was admired at charity dinners and photographed beside grateful families. He donated to community programs using money quietly transferred from hospital accounts. He spoke publicly about women’s health and patient protection.
No one saw what happened after the cameras were gone.
Chloe tried leaving once during her second trimester.
She packed a small suitcase and called a driver while Julian was at work.
He arrived before the car did.
He knew about the driver because he had access to her phone.
He knew about the suitcase because a camera in the hallway had alerted him.
He carried the luggage back upstairs and placed it in the closet.
Then he sat beside Chloe on the bed and explained, in a calm voice, what would happen if she ever tried again.
He would tell the court she was experiencing pregnancy-related delusions.
He would use his medical connections to support the claim.
He would present private recordings of her crying as evidence of instability.
He would take the baby.
When Chloe said her mother would help her, Julian smiled.
“Your mother is an aging donor with a ceremonial title,” he said. “I run the hospital. I control the board. I control the doctors. And soon, I’ll control the trust.”
Chloe did not know that the final statement was impossible.
Elena had never fully explained the hospital’s ownership structure to her daughter. She wanted Chloe’s marriage to remain separate from family wealth.
That silence allowed Julian to build his greatest lie.
He convinced Chloe that he owned everything around her.
In reality, the Hart Family Medical Trust owned fifty-eight percent of the parent company controlling St. Catherine.
Elena was its sole voting trustee.
Julian had management authority.
He never had ownership.
For years, Elena had remained distant from daily operations because she believed Chloe’s husband was modernizing the hospital.
