Chapter 9 - Behind the Laundry Wall

Police vehicles surrounded the house when I arrived.
An ambulance waited near the driveway.
I left my car in the street and ran.
Detective Ruiz intercepted me at the gate.
“Rosa and Noah are safe.”
I nearly collapsed with relief.
“What happened?”
“One intruder entered through a basement window. He escaped through the back before officers closed the perimeter.”
“Did anyone see him?”
“Black clothing, face covered. Male, probably over six feet.”
“Where are they?”
Ruiz led me inside.
The laundry room had been torn apart. Shelves lay on the floor. The washing machine had been pulled away from the wall, exposing a steel door hidden behind the paneling.
Inside was a narrow room with no windows.
Noah sat on a bench while a paramedic examined Rosa’s forehead. Blood stained her hair.
I knelt in front of my son.
“Are you hurt?”
He threw his arms around me.
“The wall opened.”
Rosa explained that after the intruder entered, Noah pulled a lever beneath the laundry sink. A concealed door opened.
“How did you know?” I asked him.
“Mom showed me.”
“Vanessa?”
He shook his head.
“My real mom.”
He could not possibly remember Emily showing him anything. He had been less than a year old when she died.
“Did Vanessa tell you that?”
“No. Mom did.”
He pointed toward a small screen built into the wall.
A blue light glowed beneath it.
When I touched the screen, a prerecorded video began.
Emily appeared again.
She was sitting in the hidden room.
“Noah,” she said, “you may be too young to understand this now. Your father may be watching with you.”
I could not breathe.
“If the door has opened, someone has entered the house who should not be there.”
She explained that the room had been built by my father during the Northstar merger. It contained an independent alarm line and ventilation system.
“Your grandfather believed the people behind Northstar would eventually come for the trust,” Emily said. “He did not tell Daniel because he feared Daniel’s honest nature would make him reveal too much.”
Even from death, my father had found a way to insult and protect me simultaneously.
Emily’s expression softened.
“Daniel, I am sorry.”
I touched the screen.
She continued.
“I discovered that someone inside the family helped Northstar survive. William knew, but he would not name that person. He said the truth would destroy you.”
The video paused.
A password box appeared.
QUESTION: WHAT DID WE NAME THE CHILD WE LOST?
My throat closed.
Before Noah, Emily had suffered a miscarriage.
We had never told anyone the name we privately chose.
“Grace,” I whispered.
The next file opened.
Emily stood beside an old man whose face I recognized from childhood photographs.
My father.
He had died four years before Emily.
Yet the timestamp showed that the recording had been made eight months after his reported death.
I stared at the screen.
My father looked thinner and older, but alive.
“If you see this,” William Mercer said, “then my death did not stop them.”
The room seemed to contract.
Ruiz leaned closer.
“Your father faked his death?”
“I watched his coffin go into the ground.”
William continued.
“Northstar was not a company. It was a system. Judges, doctors, attorneys, bankers, guardians. They identified families with vulnerable estates. Then they created illness, scandal, addiction, or death.”
Images appeared beside him.
Court files.
Medical records.
Photographs of children.
“They took control legally,” he said. “That was the genius of it. Every crime arrived wearing a signature.”
Emily spoke next.
“Vanessa Reed was recruited by Adrian Cross. We do not know whether she remains loyal to him.”
I laughed bitterly.
“We know now.”
The video distorted.
William looked directly at the camera.
“Daniel, there is a second child.”
Calvin’s words came back to me.
Your son is not the last Mercer.
William continued.
“The child was hidden after Northstar threatened the mother. If Noah’s trust is opened, the second heir will be exposed.”
The screen went black.
A single line of text appeared.
THE SECOND HEIR IS ALREADY INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.
Everyone in the hidden room became silent.

Then we heard a woman screaming downstairs.
Vanessa had returned.
