Chapter 11 - The Sister Who Cleaned My House

Rosa had worked in my home for six years.

She knew where I kept spare keys, how Noah liked his eggs, which floorboard creaked outside the library, and what song Emily used to hum while cooking.

I had never asked how she knew that song.

I had assumed Emily taught her.

In truth, my father had.

William Mercer met Rosa’s mother, Elena Alvarez, during the early expansion of the company. Elena worked as a translator for Northstar’s overseas accounts.

Their relationship lasted less than a year.

Rosa was born in secret.

“My mother never asked him for money,” Rosa said as we sat in the hidden room. “She wanted him to acknowledge me.”

“Did he?”

“Privately.”

She showed me a small pendant she had worn beneath her uniform every day.

Inside was a photograph of my father holding a baby.

On the back, he had written:

FOR MY DAUGHTER, ROSA. FORGIVE MY FEAR.

“Why come into my house as an employee?”

“Emily asked me.”

“You knew Emily?”

“She found me while investigating Northstar.”

The betrayals no longer arrived separately. They came as a flood, each one washing away another piece of my past.

“Emily knew you were my sister.”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

“She wanted to. Your father made her promise to wait.”

“He was supposedly dead.”

“He contacted her after his disappearance.”

“Why did he fake his death?”

“To protect me.”

Rosa explained that Northstar had learned of her existence. As William’s biological child, she could challenge certain ownership structures within Mercer Holdings.

Northstar threatened to expose her unless William surrendered control of several accounts.

Instead, he staged a fatal heart attack and disappeared.

“Where did he go?” I asked.

“I do not know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Her face tightened.

“I have spent half my life waiting for him to contact me.”

“Why did you stay near Noah?”

“Because Emily believed someone would eventually use him to unlock the trust. She asked me to watch the family.”

“You watched Vanessa hurt him.”

The sentence wounded her.

“I saw changes. I did not see the worst of it.”

“You lived here.”

“She became careful around me. She changed my schedule. She sent me shopping. She forged your emails.”

“You should have told me who you were.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you would look at me exactly as you are looking at me now.”

I stood.

“How am I looking at you?”

“Like I entered your house to steal it.”

The thought had crossed my mind.

She saw the answer in my silence.

Rosa stood too.

“I never wanted the company.”

“Then why hide?”

“Because the moment my identity becomes public, Northstar can use me to challenge Noah’s trust. They need both bloodlines exposed.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your father divided control between his recognized heir and his hidden heir. Neither line can authorize a full transfer without the other.”

“So Cross needs you and Noah.”

“Yes.”

A loud knock came from the steel door.

Ruiz entered.

“We have a tactical team preparing to move on the textile factory.”

“I’m going.”

“No.”

“Martin is there because of me.”

“Martin may be part of the organization that targeted you.”

“He may also know where my father is.”

Ruiz crossed her arms.

“This is not a rescue movie. You do not enter a hostage site.”

Vanessa appeared behind her, guarded by an officer.

“I can get inside,” she said.

Ruiz turned.

“You are not going anywhere except a holding cell.”

“If police approach from the main road, Cross will know. There is a tunnel from the river.”

“How do you know?”

“I used it once.”

“When?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“The night Emily died.”

No one moved.

“You were there?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“At the bridge?”

“At the factory.”

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you see who did?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with something I could not read.

“She was alive when we pulled her from the car.”

The world shifted beneath my feet.

“What did you say?”

“The crash did not kill Emily.”

I crossed the room before the officer could stop me.

My hands closed around the front of Vanessa’s coat.

“Where is my wife?”

Vanessa did not resist.

May you like

She looked directly into my eyes.

“That is the question Martin has spent twelve years preventing you from asking.”
