Chapter 12 - What Happened After the Bridge

Ruiz separated us.

Vanessa agreed to give a complete statement in exchange for protective custody and consideration from prosecutors.

I wanted to reject every bargain.

Ruiz reminded me that anger was not evidence.

Vanessa described the night of the crash.

Emily had driven to the textile factory to meet an informant. Martin followed her. Adrian Cross arrived with two men and Vanessa.

At the time, Vanessa was not a romantic infiltrator.

She was a courier.

“Cross wanted the foundation records,” she said. “Emily refused to surrender them.”

“Who caused the crash?”

“One of Cross’s men forced her vehicle off the road.”

“Then you found her alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn’t she taken to a hospital?”

“Cross had a private doctor waiting.”

“Dr. Voss.”

“Yes.”

I imagined Emily injured beside the road, surrounded by people who had already decided she was more useful as a disappearance than a survivor.

“What did Martin do?”

“He arrived after we moved her.”

“Did he help you?”

“He tried to follow. Cross threatened to kill Noah.”

Martin had found the wrecked car and believed Emily was dead. Cross used photographs of Noah to force his silence.

“Where did they take her?” I asked.

“The factory first.”

“And then?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you see her again?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“Three months later.”

Every breath hurt.

“Where?”

“At a private medical facility called St. Orison.”

Ruiz searched the name.

“No registered facility.”

“It was not public. Northstar used it to create medical histories and hold people who needed to disappear.”

“Was Emily conscious?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Did she ask about me?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She asked about Noah.”

The answer almost broke me.

“What did you tell her?”

“That he was safe.”

“Was that the only kindness you ever gave my family?”

Vanessa looked toward the room where Noah waited.

“No.”

“Do not expect gratitude because you occasionally chose not to be cruel.”

“I do not.”

Ruiz asked whether Emily might still be alive.

Vanessa’s expression became guarded.

“I heard she died during a transfer.”

“Heard from whom?”

“Cross.”

“Did you see a body?”

“No.”

Hope was dangerous.

I knew that.

Yet once it entered the room, I could not force it out.

The tactical operation began before sunrise.

Ruiz made me remain inside a command vehicle two streets away from the textile factory. Vanessa sat beside an officer, guiding the team through an old drainage tunnel.

The factory had been abandoned for twenty years. Broken windows lined the upper floors. Rusted machinery filled the main hall.

Body-camera feeds played across four monitors.

The team entered through the tunnel.

No alarms sounded.

No guards appeared.

They found Martin in an office on the third floor.

Alive.

Alone.

He was tied to a chair, dehydrated, and bleeding from the head.

Ruiz entered after the building was cleared.

I was allowed inside ten minutes later.

Martin looked at me from beneath swollen eyes.

“I told you not to give them the box.”

“I didn’t.”

“Good.”

“Where is Emily?”

He closed his eyes.

“Daniel.”

“Vanessa says the crash did not kill her.”

“She’s telling the truth.”

“Then where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

“You lied for twelve years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I tried to find her, Cross reminded me he knew where Noah slept.”

“You introduced Vanessa to me.”

His face twisted with shame.

“She came to the foundation event using another name. I recognized her years later.”

“And still introduced us?”

“She threatened to expose the trust structure and Rosa’s identity. I thought if I kept her close, I could control the damage.”

“You placed her inside my home.”

“I believed she had left Cross.”

“You gambled with my son’s life.”

“I know.”

I turned away before rage took control.

On the desk, Ruiz found a map.

Seven locations had been circled.

The factory was one.

St. Orison was another.

The final circle surrounded my house.

Beside it, someone had written:

TRANSFER AT 6:00 A.M.

I checked the time.

5:47.

“Noah,” I said.

Ruiz was already reaching for her radio.

The command channel erupted with shouting.

An officer at my house reported smoke from the second floor.

Then the connection went dead.
