Chapter 8 - The Name on Mia's Birth Record)

Dante called Elena's former attorney from the west sitting room.

Margaret Hale had retired two years earlier.

She answered on the fourth ring.

"Dante?"

"I need an answer."

His tone made her immediately serious.

"What happened?"

"Did Elena change Mia's birth certificate before she died?"

Silence.

"Who told you that?"

"Javier."

Another silence.

Dante's chest tightened.

"So it's true."

"Not exactly."

"What does that mean?"

"Dante, this should not be discussed over the phone."

"My daughter is downstairs, the man who threatened my wife is on my lawn, and I've just learned Elena's brake line was cut. We're discussing it now."

Margaret exhaled.

"Elena did not change Mia's birth certificate."

"Then what did she do?"

"She requested a certified copy."

"Why?"

"Because she believed someone had accessed Mia's identity records."

Dante looked toward Clara.

"Who?"

"She didn't know. She asked me to create additional guardianship protections for both children."

"Why Mia specifically?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Because an application had been filed using Mia's identity."

"What application?"

"A beneficiary transfer."

Dante felt the room narrow.

"For what?"

"The Vincent Romano Family Trust."

Clara's head lifted.

Javier's father.

The man she had mentioned.

Margaret continued.

"Vincent created a trust before he died. It was designed to transfer control of certain Romano assets to his direct descendants when specific conditions were met."

Dante frowned.

"Javier is his son."

"Yes."

"So why use Mia?"

"Because Javier had already triggered the trust's disqualification clause."

Dante stared at the phone.

"What did he do?"

"Vincent suspected Javier was stealing from family companies even then."

Clara whispered.

"Nine years ago."

Margaret heard her.

"Is Clara there?"

"Yes."

Margaret's voice softened.

"Then she probably knows how difficult Vincent and Javier's relationship became."

Clara nodded though Margaret could not see.

Dante asked, "What was the disqualification clause?"

"Any beneficiary found to have diverted family or charitable funds lost voting rights in the trust."

"So Javier couldn't inherit control."

"Correct."

"How does Mia fit?"

"Someone tried to register her as a contingent nominee under documents that would allow an adult representative to exercise voting rights until she turned eighteen."

Dante understood.

"Javier intended to control the trust through my daughter."

"Elena believed so."

Clara sat down.

Dante asked, "Why didn't Elena tell me?"

"She planned to."

"When?"

"The night she died."

The answer hit harder than Dante expected.

Margaret continued.

"She called me at 6:10 that evening. She said she had enough evidence. She asked me to meet both of you the next morning."

Dante looked at Elena's ledger on the table.

She had been one night away.

One night.

"Did Elena know who submitted the false documents?"

"She believed Javier did."

"Believed?"

"The signature authorizing representation was forged."

"Whose signature?"

Margaret paused.

"Yours."

Dante shut his eyes.

Javier had not merely stolen money.

He had tried to use Dante's daughter to seize control of his father's trust.

Samuel Price leaned closer.

"Ask where the original application is."

Dante did.

Margaret answered.

"In my archive."

"Bring it."

"I can be there in forty minutes."

Dante ended the call.

Clara looked at him.

"That's why Javier fears his father."

"Vincent knew what he was."

"And built a trap into the trust."

Dante nodded.

Samuel began organizing the documents.

"With Harrison's statement, Elena's ledger, the cloned credentials and the forged trust application, Javier has serious problems."

Clara looked out the window.

"He knows that."

Dante followed her gaze.

Javier was no longer on the lawn.

Dante stood instantly.

"Thomas."

The radio answered.

"Go ahead."

"Where is Javier?"

Silence.

Then frantic voices.

One of the guards came over the radio.

"He was here thirty seconds ago."

Dante ran outside.

Leo and Mia were safe with another guard near the terrace.

"Where did he go?"

A bodyguard pointed toward the service path.

"He said he needed water. Then one of the guests fainted near the gate. We looked away."

Dante turned toward the mansion.

Clara whispered.

"The library."

They ran.

The hidden drawer beneath the star map stood open.

The steel box was gone.

But Elena's original ledger was still with Dante.

"What was in the box?"

Samuel asked.

"Copies. Emails."

Clara looked around.

"And Elena's second envelope."

Dante froze.

He had forgotten about it.

The one addressed directly to him.

They found Javier in the garage.

He was holding the envelope.

Thomas and two guards surrounded him.

Javier laughed.

"You're too late."

He tore it open.

A single sheet of paper fell out.

He read it.

Then stopped smiling.

Dante approached.

"What does it say?"

Javier crumpled the page.

Dante held out his hand.

"Give it to me."

"No."

Thomas stepped forward.

Javier backed away.

Dante said, "You're standing in my garage surrounded by people who watched you attack my children. This isn't negotiation."

Javier stared at him.

Then threw the crumpled page onto the floor.

Dante picked it up.

Elena had written only a few lines.

Dante,

If Javier ever finds this before you do, let him read it.

He needs to know I discovered the one thing he spent his entire life trying to bury.

Vincent did not leave the trust to Javier.

He left controlling authority to the child Javier abandoned.

Dante looked up.

Clara looked confused.

Samuel whispered.

"Child?"

Javier's face had become colorless.

Dante read the final line.

Her name is Sofia.

And she knows who her father is.
