Chapter 7 - Harrison Vale's Confession)

Harrison Vale looked older than Dante remembered.
His hair had gone almost completely white.
His shoulders curved forward.
His hands shook when Thomas Cole escorted him into the west sitting room.
Three years earlier Harrison had worn expensive suits and spoken with the confidence of a man whose conclusions would not be questioned.
Now he looked as though he had spent those years expecting someone to knock on his door.
Dante stood across from him.
"You told me my wife's brakes were functioning."
Harrison swallowed.
"I lied."
No introduction.
No excuse.
Just the word Dante had waited three years to hear without knowing he was waiting for it.
"Why?"
"Because I was paid."
"By Javier?"
Harrison looked at the floor.
"Through Raven Crest."
Dante stepped closer.
"Did Javier sabotage Elena's car?"
"I don't know."
Dante's voice sharpened.
"You were paid two point four million dollars and you don't know?"
"I know what I was paid to hide."
"What?"
Harrison looked up.
"The brake line had been cut."
Clara closed her eyes.
Dante remained still.
Samuel Price quietly began recording the conversation on his phone.
Harrison noticed.
"Good."
Samuel frowned.
"You want this recorded?"
"I came here because I'm tired of carrying it."
Dante said, "Continue."
Harrison sat.
"Elena contacted me the day before the crash."
"You knew her?"
"Professionally. She suspected Javier was using Raven Crest to move foundation money. She asked me to inspect some company vehicles because she thought he was paying a mechanic through a shell account."
Dante's stomach turned.
"Did she mention her own car?"
"No."
"What happened after the crash?"
"I was assigned by the insurance carrier because I'd handled Romano claims before."
"Convenient."
"Javier called me before I reached the impound yard."
"What did he say?"
"He said the family had suffered enough and didn't need conspiracy theories."
"And then?"
"He offered me money."
"To lie."
"To report ordinary wear."
Dante's hands curled.
Harrison continued quickly.
"I didn't cut the line."
"But you protected whoever did."
"Yes."
"Why come here now?"
Harrison looked at Clara.
"She contacted me."
Clara's head snapped toward him.
"No, I didn't."
Harrison frowned.
"I received a message yesterday. It said Clara Romano had Elena's ledger and wanted to meet me at the family gathering."
Clara shook her head.
"I never sent that."
Dante and Samuel exchanged a look.
"Show me."
Harrison handed over his phone.
The message had come from an encrypted number.
Samuel studied it.
"This was designed to bring him here."
Dante looked toward the lawn.
"Javier."
Clara whispered.
"Why would Javier invite the man who could destroy him?"
Samuel answered first.
"Maybe he didn't invite Harrison to talk."
Harrison became pale.
Thomas immediately contacted the gate team.
"Lock down every vehicle."
A bodyguard responded over the radio.
"Already doing it."
Then another voice came through.
"We found something."
Thomas asked, "What?"
"A black sedan near the service entrance. Engine running. Plates don't match registration."
Dante looked at Harrison.
"Did you drive that?"
"No. I came in a blue Volvo."
Samuel cursed under his breath.
Dante walked toward the door.
Clara grabbed his arm.
"Dante."
He stopped.
"If Javier brought Harrison here, maybe the fight with the children wasn't just anger."
Dante looked at her.
"He wanted the envelope."
"Yes, but maybe he also wanted everyone looking at the lawn."
Samuel understood.
"A distraction."
Thomas's radio crackled.
"Sir."
Dante answered.
"Go."
"We checked the sedan."
"Who owns it?"
"Rental identity is fake."
"What did you find?"
There was a pause.
"A second phone."
"Anything else?"
"Zip ties."
Clara's face drained of color.
Thomas continued.
"And a photograph of Harrison."
Dante looked through the window.
Javier stood on the lawn between two guards.
He was no longer angry.
He was watching the house.
Waiting.
Dante returned outside.
Javier smiled.
"Find something interesting?"
"Harrison Vale."
The smile vanished.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Dante saw it.
"Harrison who?"
"Don't."
Javier laughed.
"You think some retired insurance parasite is going to save you?"
Dante walked closer.
"No. I think he's going to save himself."
Javier looked toward the west sitting room.
That confirmed everything.
Dante continued.
"He confessed."
Javier's expression became unreadable.
"To what?"
"Covering up Elena's cut brake line."
The guests still remaining on the property reacted.
Clara stepped onto the terrace.
Javier looked at her.
"You did this."
Clara shook her head.
"You did."
Javier pointed at Dante.
"He'll destroy you too. You think you're safe because you're helping him?"
Clara said nothing.
"You signed documents."
"Because you told me they were routine transfers."
"You benefited from the money."
"I never knew where it came from."
Javier laughed.
"Tell that to a prosecutor."
Dante watched them.
Then he realized something.
Javier was not speaking like a man cornered by evidence.
He was speaking like a man who still believed he had leverage.
"What are you holding?"
Javier looked at Dante.
"What?"
"You've lost the audit story. You've lost Harrison. Elena's ledger is in my hands. Yet you're still standing there smiling."
Javier's eyes changed.
Dante stepped closer.
"What do you think I don't know?"
Javier glanced at Leo.
Dante moved instantly between them.
"Don't look at my son."
Javier's smile returned.
"The answer isn't with Leo."
"Then where?"
Javier whispered.
"Ask Elena's lawyer why she changed Mia's birth certificate three days before she died."
Dante stared at him.
On the terrace, Clara whispered.
"Oh God."
For the first time that day, Dante felt fear.
May you like
Not for himself.
For Mia.
