Chapter 12 - The Mechanic at Harbor Garage)

His name was Owen Mercer.
He had owned Harbor Garage for nineteen years.
For three years he had lived in Arizona under a different name.
Federal investigators found him because Elena's ledger included an old invoice number Samuel Price recognized.
Owen agreed to speak by video call before investigators flew west.
Dante sat in the library.
Clara sat beside Samuel.
Margaret remained with Sofia and the children.
Javier had been moved to a guest office under guard after trying twice to leave the property.
Owen appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted.
"I wondered when this would happen."
Dante leaned forward.
"You worked on Elena Romano's car."
Owen nodded.
"I didn't know it was hers."
"What were you told?"
"Vehicle belonged to a company executive."
"Who brought it?"
Owen hesitated.
"A man named Javier."
Clara closed her eyes.
Dante continued.
"What did he ask you to do?"
Owen wiped his face.
"At first, nothing illegal. He asked if a damaged brake line could look like normal road failure."
Dante's voice became flat.
"And?"
"I told him maybe, depending on the damage."
"Then?"
"He offered me fifty thousand dollars."
Samuel asked, "For what?"
Owen looked into the camera.
"To weaken the line."
Dante stood.
Samuel touched his arm.
"Dante."
He remained standing.
"Did you do it?"
Owen's eyes filled.
"Yes."
The answer destroyed the last small space where coincidence could hide.
Dante walked toward the window.
Behind him Owen continued.
"I thought the car would be used for an insurance fraud. Javier told me nobody would be inside when the line failed."
Clara whispered.
"You believed that?"
"No."
Owen looked ashamed.
"I wanted to."
Dante turned.
"When did you realize Elena was driving it?"
"The news."
"And you ran."
"Not immediately."
"Why not?"
"Because Javier came back."
Dante froze.
"When?"
"The morning after the crash."
"What did he say?"
"That if I talked, my family would learn what I had done. He had photographs of my daughter leaving school."
Clara shivered.
Owen continued.
"He paid me the rest of the money and told me to disappear."
"Why talk now?"
"Because my daughter has children of her own."
He looked down.
"I see them and I think about the two kids who lost their mother because I wanted money."
Dante said nothing.
Owen added one final detail.
"Javier wasn't alone when he first came to the garage."
Samuel leaned toward the screen.
"Who was with him?"
"A man I didn't know."
"Describe him."
"Late forties then. Thin. Expensive coat. Scar near the chin."
Samuel looked at Dante.
"R.H."
Dante nodded.
The initials that had appeared throughout Elena's ledger.
Owen continued.
"Javier called him Richard."
Clara suddenly stood.
"Richard Hale."
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret Hale's husband.
The retired attorney had been a financial consultant for several Romano companies years earlier.
Samuel's face changed.
"Margaret's Richard?"
Clara nodded.
"He died eighteen months ago."
Dante felt another layer open beneath them.
Richard Hale.
R.H.
Margaret's husband.
The man Elena had identified but never named in the final ledger entry.
Dante called Margaret into the library.
When he said Richard's name, she sat down.
"No."
Samuel turned the ledger toward her.
"These initials appear beside the transfers."
Margaret stared at them.
"Richard told me he stopped consulting for Romano businesses years ago."
Dante asked, "Did he know Vincent's trust?"
Margaret looked sick.
"Yes."
The room became silent.
"He helped draft early financial schedules. Not the final legal terms, but he knew the structure."
Samuel asked, "Could he have told Javier about the disqualification clause?"
"Yes."
Clara whispered.
"Then Javier knew for years."
Margaret covered her mouth.
"My husband helped him."
No one answered.
She looked at Elena's notes.
"Richard became secretive before his illness. We argued about money. There were accounts he wouldn't explain."
Dante spoke carefully.
"Margaret, none of this makes you responsible for what he did."
She looked at him.
"He used my access."
"What?"
Margaret stood suddenly.
"The false application involving Mia."
Dante's blood went cold.
"It came from your archive."
"Yes. I thought the system had been compromised externally."
Samuel understood.
"Richard had access to the office."
Margaret nodded.
"He knew my passwords."
Dante sat down again.
Javier had not acted alone.
Richard Hale had helped him manipulate trust records.
Move foundation money.
And arrange Elena's car sabotage.
But Richard was dead.
Javier was not.
Samuel's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Dante waited.
Samuel ended the call.
"Federal agents are on the way."
Clara exhaled.
"Good."
Samuel did not look relieved.
"There's another issue."
Dante frowned.
"Javier isn't in the guest office."
Thomas came over the radio at the same moment.
"Lock the house."
Dante stood.
Thomas continued.
"Javier attacked one of the guards."
"Children?"
"Safe."
"Clara?"
Clara was beside him.
"Sofia?"
Margaret turned toward the hallway.
Mia screamed from upstairs.
Everyone ran.
They found Leo at the top of the staircase.
His face was white.
Dante grabbed him.
"Where's Mia?"
Leo pointed toward the east wing.
"Uncle Javier took her."
Dante stopped breathing.
May you like
Leo continued.
"He said if Sofia signs anything, he'll make everyone remember what happens when people take what's his."
