Chapter 5 - The Man Cole Buried Twice

The attack ended eleven minutes later.

No bodies were found in the woods.

No abandoned weapons.

No tire tracks beyond Daniel’s damaged SUV.

Only shell casings scattered across the snow, each wiped clean of fingerprints.

The intruders had never intended to enter the house.

They had driven everyone underground.

Exactly where they wanted Lauren to go.

Lauren understood that now.

Someone had forced her to discover the chamber.

Someone who knew the estate’s hidden systems.

Someone who knew her blood would open the steel door.

She stood before the underground monitors while security teams searched the mansion above.

Daniel leaned against the table, his injured face pale beneath the fluorescent lights.

Eleanor wrapped a blanket around his shoulders.

“You need a doctor.”

“I need immunity.”

“You came here expecting Lauren to protect you.”

“I came here because Cole’s family will kill me before sunrise.”

Lauren turned from the screens.

“Then give me a reason not to hand you to the investigators.”

Daniel looked at the sealed envelope on the table.

“Open it.”

Lauren broke the wax.

Inside were copies of private banking records, medical reports, and handwritten notes bearing the signature of Cole’s father, Richard Whitmore.

One document was dated twenty-nine years earlier.

SUBJECT A-11

MALE

AGE ELEVEN

POST-TRAUMA MEMORY RETENTION: HIGH

FAMILY ATTACHMENT: EXTREME

COMPLIANCE: LOW

RECOMMENDATION: PERMANENT SEPARATION

Lauren felt sick.

“Subject A-11 was Adrian.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather believed both of you were taken to a private recovery clinic after the crash. He recovered you within forty-eight hours.”

“But not Adrian.”

“No.”

“Who took him?”

“Richard Whitmore.”

Lauren looked at the signature.

“Cole’s father kidnapped my brother?”

“He considered Adrian an insurance policy.”

“Against what?”

“Your grandfather.”

Daniel slowly sat down.

“The Ashcroft Trust financed the earliest Whitmore companies. Richard was brilliant, but he was also desperate. He borrowed money through entities he could never repay. When your grandfather discovered Richard was moving funds offshore, he prepared to remove him from every Ashcroft-controlled business.”

“So Richard arranged the crash.”

“He arranged a kidnapping disguised as an accident.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“The driver was paid to force your family car off the road. Both children were supposed to disappear. Richard planned to use you and Adrian to pressure your grandfather into leaving the Whitmore companies untouched.”

“Then why was I returned?”

“Because the operation failed. The crash drew witnesses. Your grandfather’s men located the clinic where you were being held.”

“But Adrian had already been moved.”

“Yes.”

Lauren flipped through the documents.

Medical evaluations.

Photographs of a frightened boy in different facilities.

Different names.

Andrew Hale.

Aaron Cross.

Adam Reed.

Each identity lasted only a few years.

Then another began.

“How long did Richard hold him?”

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Until Adrian was eighteen.”

Lauren looked up sharply.

“That’s seven years.”

“Seven years of conditioning, isolation, and controlled education.”

“For what purpose?”

“To turn him against the Ashcrofts.”

Lauren looked at the medical bed.

“Did it work?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Partially.”

The word chilled her.

“What does partially mean?”

“Adrian escaped when he was eighteen. Richard told everyone involved that he had died during the attempt.”

“But he didn’t.”

“No.”

“Where did he go?”

“Nobody knew. Not until six months ago.”

Daniel pointed to another document.

It was a hotel surveillance photograph.

Adrian stood beside Cole in a private lobby.

The date was June 14.

Lauren remembered that night.

Cole had told her he was in Boston negotiating a merger.

“What was Cole doing with him?”

“Buying his silence.”

“About the kidnapping?”

“About everything.”

Lauren stared at the image.

Cole had known her brother was alive.

He had met him secretly.

Then returned home and kissed her as if nothing had happened.

“What did Adrian demand?”

“Access to the Trust archives.”

“Cole didn’t have access.”

“He had something Adrian believed could unlock them.”

“The key behind Richard’s portrait.”

Daniel nodded.

“The vault was empty because Cole removed the key before the investigators arrived.”

Lauren remembered Cole’s face after she told him to look behind the portrait.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“He knew what was there.”

“Yes.”

“Where is the key now?”

Daniel looked toward the monitor displaying the interrogation room.

“Cole gave it to someone.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Before Daniel could answer, the steel door behind them opened.

A security guard entered.

“Mrs. Ashcroft, the twins are safe. We moved them into the reinforced nursery.”

Lauren released a breath.

“Any injuries?”

“One guard was grazed by a round. Nothing serious.”

“And the attackers?”

“Gone.”

The guard placed a small object on the table.

“We found this outside the nursery window.”

A silver locket.

Lauren opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of her and Adrian as children.

On the other side, someone had engraved four words.

I KEPT MY PROMISE.

Lauren’s throat tightened.

Her brother had been inside the estate perimeter.

Perhaps even inside the mansion.

Eleanor stared at the locket.

“He came back.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t know what he has become.”

Lauren closed the locket.

“I know what was done to him.”

“That does not make him safe.”

“No.”

“But it means I won’t let the Whitmores define him before I hear the truth myself.”

A soft electronic tone sounded.

The underground system had detected an incoming encrypted message.

The largest monitor illuminated.

A video file appeared.

Timestamp: December 24, 11:41 p.m.

Location: Whitmore Capital, Executive Floor.

The video began.

Cole entered his office carrying a black leather case.

He locked the door.

Then Vanessa stepped out from behind the curtains.

Lauren’s expression hardened.

The timestamp showed the meeting had occurred before she found them in the penthouse bedroom.

Vanessa held out her hand.

Cole opened the leather case.

Inside lay an old brass key.

The missing key.

Vanessa smiled.

“You’re sure this opens the archive?”

“That’s what my father believed.”

“And once we have the original Trust ledger?”

“We can prove Lauren activated the protocol illegally.”

Vanessa touched his chest.

“And the children?”

Cole looked away.

“They’ll be placed under temporary guardianship.”

“Whose guardianship?”

“Mine.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You mean ours.”

Cole kissed her.

Lauren watched without blinking.

The video continued.

Vanessa took the key and placed it inside her handbag.

Then she asked, “What about Adrian?”

Cole answered in a whisper.

“My father buried him once.”

“I can do it again.”

The footage stopped.

No one in the chamber spoke.

Lauren felt something inside her harden beyond grief.

This was no longer about a failed marriage.

Cole had planned to take her children.

He had known her brother was alive.

He had intended to silence him.

Lauren turned to the guard.

“Find Vanessa.”

“We’re trying. She left the penthouse before investigators secured the elevators.”

“How?”

“Service passage.”

Daniel cursed softly.

“She knows more than we thought.”

Lauren looked at the frozen video image of Vanessa holding the key.

“Who is she?”

Daniel avoided her eyes.

“Answer me.”

“She isn’t Vanessa Bell.”

Lauren’s pulse slowed.

“What is her real name?”

Daniel reached into the envelope and removed a birth certificate.

The name printed across the top was:

VANESSA HAWTHORNE

Lauren remembered the notebook from the unseen man in the abandoned church.

Ashcroft.

Whitmore.

Hawthorne.

Three families.

Three names bound by something older than her marriage.

“What does Hawthorne mean?”

Eleanor stepped backward.

“No.”

Lauren looked at her.

“You recognize it.”

Eleanor’s face turned gray.

“The Hawthornes served the Ashcroft family for generations.”

“As employees?”

“As protectors.”

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s the story they tell.”

“What is the truth?”

“They believed the Trust belonged to them.”

Lauren looked toward the map marked with red pins.

“Why?”

“Because the Ashcrofts did not create the original fortune.”

Daniel tapped the Hawthorne birth certificate.

“They stole it.”

The monitor suddenly changed.

A live feed from the reinforced nursery appeared.

Ethan and Evelyn slept in separate beds.

A guard stood outside the locked door.

Everything seemed normal.

Then Evelyn opened her eyes.

She sat up.

Someone was standing beside her bed.

A man wearing a dark coat.

The cameras had not captured him entering.

Lauren rushed toward the monitor.

The stranger bent down and gently touched Evelyn’s hair.

Then he lifted his face toward the hidden camera.

Lauren saw her own eyes staring back at her.

Adrian.

May you like

He held one finger to his lips.

Then the nursery feed went black.
