Chapter 1 - The Christmas That Never Ended

Outside, snow drifted silently over Manhattan.

Inside the Whitmore penthouse, Christmas lights still sparkled beneath a twelve-foot tree decorated in crystal ornaments imported from Germany. Expensive gifts covered the floor, each wrapped with perfect ribbons, each carrying a name that suddenly felt meaningless.

Lauren stepped into the private elevator with her twins sleeping against her chest.

For the first time in years...

She did not cry.

The elevator doors closed.

Only then did she allow herself one long breath.

Ten years.

Ten Christmases.

Ten years of pretending everything was fine.

Tonight...

It was finally over.

As the elevator descended, her phone buzzed once.

A single message.

Protocol Stage Two confirmed.

Guardian Team arriving in three minutes.

The children are now under full protection.

Lauren stared at the screen before slipping the phone back into her coat.

The twins stirred.

Tiny Evelyn opened sleepy blue eyes.

"Mommy..."

Lauren kissed her forehead.

"It's okay."

"We're going home."

Little Ethan blinked.

"Will Daddy come?"

Lauren hesitated.

Snowflakes drifted beyond the glass walls of the elevator shaft.

Finally she smiled sadly.

"No, sweetheart."

"I don't think Daddy knows where home is anymore."

Above them, the penthouse doors burst open.

Federal investigators entered one after another.

Cole stood frozen beside the Christmas tree.

His mistress, Vanessa, wrapped herself in a silk robe, suddenly realizing the nightmare wasn't ending.

It was only beginning.

A gray-haired investigator held up a leather badge.

"Mr. Cole Whitmore?"

"Yes..."

"We're here regarding the emergency execution of Trust Protocol Seven."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You will."

The investigator nodded toward the living room.

"We'll need access to every room."

"Immediately."

Cole looked around helplessly.

"This is my home."

The investigator met his eyes without emotion.

"We're here to determine whether that's true."

Cole laughed nervously.

"This has to be some mistake."

The investigator opened a thick folder.

"No mistake."

"The ownership documents we're holding were signed long before you ever moved into this penthouse."

Cole's smile disappeared.

Outside, Lauren stepped into the snow.

Across the street, three black SUVs waited with their engines running.

One of the drivers stepped forward and respectfully opened the rear door.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Whitmore."

Lauren looked back once.

Only once.

High above, through the glowing windows of the penthouse, she could still see the Christmas tree shining.

She remembered decorating it alone every year while Cole claimed he was "working late."

This year...

He would spend Christmas surrounded by investigators instead of family.

She entered the SUV.

The convoy disappeared into the snowy Manhattan night.

Neither Lauren nor Cole realized that somewhere across the city, another pair of eyes had been watching everything unfold.

And that mysterious observer quietly whispered...

"It's finally time."
