Chapter 3 - The Secret Written Before They Were Born

The Ashcroft Estate stood hidden behind towering iron gates in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by ancient oaks blanketed in snow. Few people even knew it existed. To the outside world, the property had been abandoned for decades.
It hadn't.
The gates opened without a sound as Lauren's convoy approached.
Ethan pressed his small hand against the window.
"Mommy..."
"Is this a castle?"
Lauren smiled for the first time that evening.
"It used to be your great-grandfather's home."
"Will we stay here?"
"For a little while."
As the vehicles rolled up the long stone driveway, lights gradually illuminated across the mansion, one room after another, as though the house itself had been waiting for her return.
An elderly woman stood beneath the front entrance holding an umbrella despite the falling snow.
Her silver hair was tied neatly into a bun.
She bowed her head.
"Welcome home, Miss Ashcroft."
Lauren stepped out, carrying the twins.
"It's been a long time, Eleanor."
"Far too long."
The elderly housekeeper's eyes filled with tears as she looked at the children.
"They have your grandmother's eyes."
Lauren froze.
No one had ever said that before.
Inside the mansion, fireplaces had already been lit.
Warmth replaced the bitter December cold.
Family portraits lined the grand staircase.
Portraits Lauren had not seen since childhood.
One showed her as a little girl laughing beside an older boy she barely remembered.
She stopped.
"Eleanor..."
"Who is that?"
The old woman followed her gaze.
For a brief moment, something resembling fear crossed her face.
"You don't remember?"
Lauren slowly shook her head.
"I thought I was an only child."
Eleanor whispered almost to herself.
"So..."
"They really erased him."
Lauren turned sharply.
"What did you say?"
Before Eleanor could answer, another phone rang.
Not Lauren's.
The house telephone.
An old-fashioned brass instrument sitting alone on a hallway table.
No one had used it in years.
Yet it was ringing.
Again.
And again.
Eleanor's face turned pale.
"No."
"It can't be."
Lauren picked up the receiver.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's calm voice.
"You activated the Trust."
"Yes."
"You shouldn't have come home."
"Who is this?"
A quiet chuckle answered.
"The one person your grandfather could never defeat."
The line went dead.
Lauren remained motionless.
Eleanor stared at her in horror.
"What did he say?"
Lauren looked toward the forgotten childhood portrait on the staircase.
Then back at Eleanor.
"Tell me the truth."
"Who was the boy standing beside me?"
The elderly housekeeper slowly sank into a chair.
After thirty years...
The secret she had sworn to protect could no longer remain buried.
Outside the mansion, hidden among the snow-covered trees beyond the gates, a pair of binoculars reflected the lights from the house.
Someone had been watching Lauren since she left Manhattan.
A gloved hand lowered the binoculars.
The unseen observer quietly spoke into a secure radio.
"Target has returned to Ashcroft Estate."
A voice replied through static.
"Proceed to Phase Two."
The watcher smiled.
"Understood."
And somewhere beneath the estate...
Locked behind a steel door no one remembered...
May you like
A faint mechanical sound echoed through the darkness.
Something had just awakened.
