Chapter 5 - Mara’s Real Name

Daniel confronted Mara in the library.

The twins had finally fallen asleep on the sofa, exhausted by fear. Noah’s hand remained wrapped around Mara’s sleeve.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

“Who sent you?”

Mara looked at the handwriting on the back.

She became very still.

“No one.”

“Your name is not Mara Ellison.”

“No.”

Mrs. Finch stood near the door, pale and silent.

Marcus remained behind Daniel.

“What is your name?” Daniel asked.

Mara gently freed her sleeve from Noah’s hand.

“Elena Hart.”

Daniel looked at the old photograph from Amelia’s desk.

“The girl beside my wife.”

“Yes.”

“Who were you to her?”

Elena hesitated.

“Her sister.”

The word struck the room like broken glass.

Daniel stared at her.

“Amelia did not have a sister.”

“She did.”

“I knew her for sixteen years.”

“You knew the life she was allowed to show you.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Explain.”

Elena looked at the sleeping twins.

“Not here.”

“They are asleep.”

“They wake when people argue.”

Daniel wanted to refuse.

Instead, he led Elena into the adjoining study.

Marcus followed.

Elena closed the door softly.

“My mother worked for the Whitmore family before I was born,” she said. “She was a kitchen maid at the old summer estate in Maine.”

Daniel had inherited the property but had not visited it in years.

“My father was Robert Whitmore.”

Daniel’s uncle.

The brother of Daniel’s late father.

Robert had died in a sailing accident when Daniel was twelve.

“You are claiming you are Robert’s daughter.”

“I am his daughter.”

“And Amelia?”

“My half-sister.”

Daniel stared.

“That is impossible.”

“Our mother was pregnant with me when Robert became engaged to Amelia’s mother. He paid her to disappear. Two years later, Amelia was born.”

“Amelia’s mother was Caroline Hartwell.”

“Yes.”

“You have different mothers.”

“And the same father.”

Daniel tried to fit the information into the history he knew.

Robert Whitmore married Caroline, inherited a portion of the family trust, and died seven years later. Caroline died of cancer when Amelia was nineteen.

No mention of another child.

No mention of Elena.

“How did Amelia find you?”

“She found letters after Caroline died. Letters Robert had hidden in a locked desk.”

“And she contacted you?”

“When I was sixteen.”

The photograph had been taken around that time.

Daniel touched its edge.

“Why did she never tell me?”

“Because your father threatened her.”

Daniel’s eyes lifted.

“My father?”

“Charles Whitmore knew about me. He knew my existence could expose financial crimes Robert committed through family trusts. He told Amelia that if she brought me into the family, he would destroy my mother and me.”

“My father died nine years ago.”

“The threat did not die with him.”

Marcus spoke for the first time.

“What work did Amelia ask you to finish?”

Elena looked at him.

“She believed someone was stealing from the children’s trust.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“The trust is audited quarterly.”

“By a company owned through three subsidiaries connected to your cousin Julian.”

Daniel’s amusement vanished.

Julian Whitmore served as vice chairman of Whitmore Global. He had managed family finances during Daniel’s first months of grief.

Elena continued.

“Amelia discovered payments to clinics, private investigators, and a security company that did not officially exist.”

“Why would she investigate the children’s trust?”

“Because the withdrawals began two weeks after the twins were born.”

Daniel’s mind raced.

“What were the payments for?”

“She never found out.”

“But you know.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“I know what she suspected.”

“What?”

“That someone was preparing to remove Ethan and Noah from your custody.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?”

Before Elena could answer, a scream came from the library.

They rushed through the door.

Ethan stood on the sofa.

Noah was gone.

The hidden wall panel was open.

Daniel ran toward it.

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

“She took him.”

“Who?”

“The lady with the scar.”

A faint lullaby echoed from inside the passage.

Elena recognized it instantly.

It was the song their father used to sing at the Maine cottage.

She climbed into the tunnel.

Daniel followed.

They found Noah twenty yards inside, sitting alone with a candle before him.

The scarred woman was gone.

Noah pointed toward a chalk mark on the wall.

It formed a circle around the number 17.

“What did she say?” Daniel asked.

Noah looked up.

“She said Aunt Elena knows where Door 17 is.”

Daniel slowly turned toward Elena.

May you like

She did know.

And the last person who had entered Door 17 had been Amelia on the night before she died.
