Chapter 14 - The Father Who Stayed

The north cliff rose above a violent black sea.
Julian stood near the edge with Ethan beside him.
One arm was wrapped around the boy’s chest.
A pistol pressed against Daniel’s son’s ribs.
Daniel approached through the rain holding the laboratory drive.
“No security,” Julian called.
“No security.”
Ethan’s face was pale, but he did not cry.
Daniel stopped twenty feet away.
“Let him come to me.”
“Throw the drive first.”
“You will shoot me after I do.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Don’t give it to him.”
Julian tightened his grip.
“Be quiet.”
Daniel saw movement behind a line of rocks.
Elena was in position.
Rachel and Marcus waited inside the old drainage tunnel beneath the cliff.
Daniel needed to keep Julian facing forward.
“You wanted to know which boy was yours,” Daniel said.
Julian laughed bitterly.
“Neither.”
“No.”
Julian’s expression changed.
Daniel held up the drive.
“The final genetic report is here.”
“You opened it?”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
“Ethan.”
The boy’s eyes widened.
Julian stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“Ethan is your biological son.”
Julian looked down.
For one second, the pistol moved away from Ethan’s ribs.
“You are lying.”
“Am I?”
Daniel took one step closer.
“Charles used your sample during the first procedure. Cross falsified the report.”
Julian’s breathing changed.
“You said the file showed Daniel’s sample,” Ethan said.
Julian looked at him.
Daniel almost smiled.
Ethan had been listening.
As always.
Julian’s confusion lasted long enough.
Elena rose behind the rocks.
She threw a small metal object toward Julian’s feet.
Amelia’s music box struck the ground and began playing the old lullaby.
Julian instinctively turned.
Ethan bit his arm.
Julian shouted and released him.
Daniel ran.
A gunshot broke through the storm.
Daniel tackled Ethan to the ground.
Pain tore across his side.
Marcus emerged from the tunnel and fired.
Julian staggered backward.
The edge of the cliff collapsed beneath him.
He disappeared into the darkness below.
Elena reached Daniel.
Blood covered his shirt.
Ethan knelt beside him.
“Dad.”
“I’m all right.”
“You’re bleeding.”
“I have done it before.”
“That’s not funny.”
“No.”
Ethan pressed both hands against the wound as Marcus called for medics.
Daniel looked toward the cliff.
“Did anyone see him hit the water?”
“No,” Marcus said.
Daniel knew what that meant.
Julian might be dead.
Or he might disappear again.
Ethan shook violently.
Elena wrapped her coat around him.
Daniel reached for his son.
Ethan went to him without hesitation.
“You came,” he whispered.
“Always.”
“You left Noah.”
“Noah is safe.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Mrs. Finch is with him.”
“What if someone takes him?”
Daniel held Ethan’s face between his hands.
“We are going home.”
“To the mansion?”
“No.”
Ethan stared.
Daniel finally understood that Whitmore House had never felt like a home to his sons.
It had felt like a guarded museum filled with secrets, employees, locked doors, and the memory of a mother who vanished.
“Where?” Ethan asked.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“The cottage by the sea.”
Three weeks later, Daniel closed Whitmore House.
Every employee connected to Julian was investigated. Clarissa Vale was arrested attempting to cross into Canada. Dr. Cross accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.
The Whitmore board removed Julian from every position.
Daniel publicly announced an independent investigation into the company’s historical crimes.
Share prices fell.
Advisers panicked.
Daniel did not reverse his decision.
He sold the private jet, closed two family offices, and placed the majority of the twins’ assets into a transparent trust managed by an external board.
None of it helped Ethan sleep.
The first night at the seaside cottage, the boys stood in the doorway of Amelia’s old bedroom.
Elena changed the sheets.
Daniel set two mattresses on the floor.
Ethan looked at them.
“You’re sleeping here?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“As long as you need.”
Noah climbed onto one mattress.
Elena sat beside him.
Ethan remained standing.
“What if we need forever?”
Daniel removed his watch and placed it on the table.
“Then I will need a better mattress.”
Ethan almost smiled.
Hours later, Daniel woke to silence.
His heart raced.
He sat up.
The boys were gone from their mattresses.
Then he saw them.
Ethan and Noah had climbed into the bed beside Elena.
One twin rested against each of her shoulders.
For the first time in nearly a year, both boys slept peacefully.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Elena opened her eyes.
Fear passed across her face.
Perhaps she thought he would accuse her of crossing a boundary.
Perhaps she thought he would ask her to leave.
Daniel whispered, “Five nannies could not do this.”
Elena gently stroked Noah’s hair.
“They did not need another nanny.”
“How did you know?”
“They cried until they felt safe.”
Daniel looked at his sons.
“What did they need?”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Someone who stayed.”
May you like
Daniel sat on the floor beside the bed.
He remained there until morning.
