Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Burned

They arrived at the summer estate under the cover of a coastal storm.
Marcus positioned security teams in the forest and along the cliffs.
Daniel and Elena entered the house through the main doors.
The power was out.
Candles burned in the dining room.
Julian sat at the far end of the long table.
Beside him was an elderly woman with white hair.
Elena stopped.
“Mom?”
The woman lifted her face.
Her features were thinner, older, and marked by burn scars along her neck.
But Elena recognized her.
“Lena,” the woman whispered.
Elena crossed the room.
Daniel caught her arm.
Julian raised his pistol.
“Let her come.”
Elena pulled free and ran to her mother.
They held each other for the first time in sixteen years.
“You died,” Elena cried.
“I wanted you to believe I had.”
“Why?”
“To keep you hidden.”
Julian watched them.
Daniel remained near the doorway.
“Let them leave,” he said.
Julian smiled.
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“The laboratory drive.”
“It was damaged.”
“You are lying.”
Daniel removed the drive from his coat.
Julian’s eyes followed it.
“First, tell me why Charles created the program.”
Julian poured wine into his glass.
“Your father believed the Whitmore family had become weak. Too emotional. Too willing to divide wealth among people he considered unworthy.”
“He created children in a laboratory?”
“He preserved options.”
“You were one of those options.”
Julian’s smile faded.
“Yes.”
Elena’s mother held her hand.
Her name was Rose Mercer, though the Whitmore family had known her as Rosalind Hart.
Rose looked at Daniel.
“Charles selected women who worked for the family. Women without money. Women no one would believe.”
Daniel felt ill.
“My father abused them.”
“He called it research.”
Julian’s grip tightened around the glass.
“Do not pretend you are morally superior. You inherited everything he built.”
“I did not know.”
“You never wanted to know.”
Daniel could not deny that he had accepted the family empire without examining every foundation beneath it.
Elena looked at her mother.
“What happened the night of the fire?”
“Charles learned Amelia had found you. He sent men to burn our house.”
“You escaped.”
“Mrs. Finch helped me.”
Elena looked toward Daniel.
“Mrs. Finch knew?”
“She knew enough,” Rose said. “She moved me between shelters for years.”
“Why didn’t you come for me?”
“Because Charles watched you.”
“He died nine years ago.”
“Julian continued his work.”
Julian stood.
“I protected the family.”
“You kidnapped children,” Elena said.
“I tried to identify my sons.”
“Are either of them yours?”
Julian’s expression flickered.
“I do not know.”
Rose looked at Daniel.
“Neither boy is Julian’s.”
Julian turned sharply.
“You cannot know that.”
“I was present when all four infants were born.”
The storm struck the windows.
Rose continued.
“Amelia gave birth to no child. The embryos used in her treatment were destroyed. Charles replaced them.”
Daniel gripped the chair before him.
“Whose children are Ethan and Noah?”
“One is Elena’s biological brother, conceived from Robert’s stored sample.”
Elena began to cry.
“And the other?”
Rose looked at Julian.
“The other is yours.”
Julian froze.
Daniel stared.
“You said neither was Julian’s.”
“I was not speaking to Daniel.”
The meaning unfolded slowly.
Rose was telling Julian that the other child belonged to Daniel.
Biologically.
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“Charles used Daniel’s sample without his knowledge.”
Daniel remembered a medical examination after a polo accident years before the twins were born.
“Which one?” he asked.
Rose looked at him.
“I do not know. The infants were switched during the clinic evacuation.”
Julian slammed his glass onto the table.
“You are lying.”
“The records on the drive will prove it.”
Julian aimed the pistol at Daniel.
“Give it to me.”
Daniel held up the drive.
“Let Elena and Rose leave.”
“No.”
“Then you get nothing.”
Julian stepped closer.
A voice came from the shadows behind him.
“He is telling the truth.”
Rachel emerged from the dark corridor.
The scar crossed her face.
Up close, she looked even more like Amelia.
Julian spun toward her.
“You.”
Rachel fired first.
The bullet struck Julian’s shoulder.
Daniel lunged across the table as Julian returned fire.
Elena pulled Rose to the floor.
Candles fell.
Curtains caught fire.
Marcus and his team stormed the room.
Julian disappeared through the terrace doors into the storm.
Rachel stood over the fallen pistol.
Daniel stared at her.
“Are you Amelia’s sister?”
Rachel looked toward the flames.
“I was.”
“Did you kill her?”
Tears filled Rachel’s eyes.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
May you like
Rose answered from the floor.
“I did.”
