Chapter 5 - THE LIE LUKE COULD NOT ESCAPE

Luke learned about the pregnancy from a photograph he was never supposed to see.

Marco entered his office shortly after midnight carrying a file stolen from Adrian’s private archive.

Marco had served Luke for nine years. He had been his driver, security chief, adviser, and occasionally the only person willing to tell him he was wrong.

He dropped the file on Luke’s desk.

“We have a problem.”

Luke looked up.

“What kind?”

“The kind that begins with your brother lying to us.”

Marco opened the file.

Inside were surveillance photographs of Elena.

In one, she stood outside a medical clinic with a hand resting over the unmistakable curve beneath her coat.

Luke stared.

He did not speak.

Marco placed a copy of a medical invoice beside the photograph.

The patient name was Elena Ward.

The clinic specialized in obstetrics.

Luke slowly rose.

“How far along?”

“I don’t know.”

“When was this taken?”

“Eight weeks ago.”

Luke looked toward the date.

His mind calculated instantly.

The child could only be his.

He walked around the desk, then stopped as if he had forgotten where he intended to go.

“She tried to call me.”

Marco frowned.

“When?”

“I don’t know. I saw several blocked calls after the divorce. My office said they were press inquiries.”

Marco’s expression darkened.

“Your office does not screen your personal line.”

Luke looked at him.

They understood at the same time.

“Adrian,” Marco said.

Luke reached for his phone.

Marco stopped him.

“Wait.”

Luke’s eyes became dangerous.

“Move your hand.”

“If Adrian has been intercepting her calls, we need to know why before he realizes we found out.”

“My wife is pregnant.”

“Your former wife.”

Luke’s fist struck the desk so hard a glass paperweight rolled to the floor.

“Do not call her that.”

Marco remained still.

“You divorced her.”

“To protect her.”

“And did it work?”

Luke’s face changed.

Marco had gone too far, but neither man pretended the question was unfair.

Luke looked again at the photograph.

Elena appeared frightened.

A dark car was visible behind her.

“Who took these?”

“I traced payments from one of Adrian’s accounts to a private contractor.”

“Where is Elena now?”

“Still in Bellmere.”

“Get the helicopter.”

“The weather is too severe.”

“Then get the car.”

Marco did not move.

“There’s more.”

He handed Luke a second folder.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Forged authorizations.

Luke read the first page and felt something cold enter his blood.

“The settlement never reached her.”

“No.”

“The apartment?”

“Still owned by the company.”

“The trust?”

“Emptied.”

Luke flipped through the pages.

“Why didn’t finance flag this?”

“Because the compliance officer who approved it resigned last month. He left the country.”

Luke lifted his eyes.

“And the security team?”

“There is no security team.”

Silence filled the office.

For six months, Luke had believed Elena was protected.

For six months, she had been pregnant, isolated, and watched by men paid by his brother.

His phone rang.

The caller identification showed Detective Sarah Bennett.

Luke answered.

“Mr. Ashford?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Detective Bennett with the Bellmere Police Department. I’m calling about Elena Ward.”

Luke gripped the phone.

“What happened?”

“She was involved in an incident at her residence. She is alive, but we believe she may be in immediate danger.”

“I’m coming.”

“There’s something else. We found surveillance equipment linked to one of your companies.”

Luke looked at Marco.

“I did not authorize it.”

“You may want to discuss that in person.”

“Is Elena with you?”

“She refused protective custody.”

“Put her on the phone.”

“She does not want to speak to you.”

The words landed exactly where Luke deserved.

“Detective, please.”

“I’ll tell her you called.”

“She’s pregnant.”

Bennett paused.

“You know?”

“I just found out.”

Another pause.

Then Bennett’s tone changed.

“Mr. Ashford, when was the last time you personally confirmed Elena was safe?”

Luke looked at the false reports spread across his desk.

He could not answer.

Bennett exhaled.

“That’s what I thought.”

The call ended.

Luke stood unmoving.

Marco began gathering the files.

“We leave now.”

Luke picked up the photograph of Elena.

“I made her believe I stopped loving her.”

Marco looked at him.

“You did more than make her believe it.”

Luke’s eyes lifted.

“You made everyone else believe it too.”

The meaning was clear.

May you like

Luke had tried to erase Elena’s value as leverage.

Instead, he had erased the protection attached to his name.
