Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION THAT CAME TOO LATE

Elena collapsed before the ambulance reached the airfield gate.

Luke climbed inside with her despite the paramedic’s objections.

Her blood pressure was falling.

The fetal monitor produced an irregular rhythm.

“Stay with me,” Luke said.

Elena’s eyes opened.

“You said that before.”

“When?”

“The night my mother died.”

Luke remembered.

They had been twenty-two. Elena had sat on a hospital floor after doctors told her there was nothing more they could do. Luke had held her until sunrise.

He had promised she would never face pain alone again.

Then he had abandoned her when she needed him most.

“I failed you,” he said.

Her eyes closed.

“Not now.”

“What?”

“Don’t apologize now. I need you to think.”

The paramedic adjusted the intravenous line.

Elena forced herself to continue.

“Adrian wasn’t alone.”

“I know.”

“No. Someone gave him information he couldn’t have known. My clinic appointments. My medication. The police patrol schedule.”

“Catherine?”

“Maybe.”

Luke held her hand.

“Elena, why didn’t you tell me about the baby?”

A tear escaped the corner of her eye.

“I called.”

His throat closed.

“I know.”

“A woman said you were traveling with your fiancée.”

“There was no one.”

“I know that now.”

“How?”

“Because the woman used the wrong name for your favorite hotel.”

Despite everything, Luke almost smiled.

Elena had always noticed details.

“You should have tried again.”

“You told me you loved someone else.”

“I lied.”

“I believed you.”

“I wanted you to.”

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

The ambulance turned sharply.

Elena winced.

“I thought you hated me.”

“I never stopped loving you.”

Her face tightened with pain.

“Love isn’t supposed to look like what you did.”

Luke had no defense.

At the hospital, doctors rushed Elena into surgery.

Luke stood in the corridor covered in her blood.

Marco arrived twenty minutes later.

“Adrian survived.”

“Where is he?”

“In police custody at another hospital.”

“Has he talked?”

“He wants immunity.”

“He kidnapped Elena.”

“He claims Catherine planned the abduction and he only intended to secure the trust documents.”

Luke looked through the surgical doors.

“What about Evelyn?”

“Missing.”

“She helped Elena escape.”

“She also participated in the kidnapping.”

Luke turned.

“Find her before Catherine does.”

Marco nodded.

Detective Bennett approached carrying a recorder.

“Adrian made a partial statement.”

Luke’s expression sharpened.

“What did he say?”

Bennett activated the recording.

Adrian’s voice filled the hallway.

Catherine knew Elena was pregnant before I did. She obtained a blood sample from the clinic. She ordered paternity testing.

Bennett’s voice followed on the recording.

What were the results?

The child is Luke’s.

Luke closed his eyes.

Adrian continued.

Catherine said the pregnancy had to disappear. At first, she wanted Elena sent abroad. Then someone contacted her.

Who?

I don’t know his real name.

What did he want?

The child.

Why?

He said the baby carried something Arthur had spent decades trying to reproduce.

The recording ended.

Luke stared at Bennett.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

Marco thought of the medical vials in the warehouse.

“Evelyn’s research.”

Bennett nodded.

“Her clinic studied hereditary immune disorders and rare blood traits. Most of the records were destroyed.”

Luke looked toward the operating room.

“My child is being hunted because of something in my blood?”

“Possibly.”

The surgical doors opened.

A doctor stepped out.

Luke moved toward him.

“Elena?”

“She survived the procedure.”

Luke released a breath.

“And the baby?”

The doctor hesitated.

“We stabilized the fetal heartbeat, but the next twenty-four hours are critical.”

“Can I see her?”

“Soon.”

The doctor’s expression remained serious.

“There is something else. We found evidence of repeated low-dose poisoning over several weeks.”

“What kind?”

“A compound designed to mimic pregnancy complications.”

Luke’s hands curled.

“Could the vitamins have contained it?”

“Yes.”

Bennett looked at Marco.

“That means someone inside the medical supply chain helped.”

The doctor continued.

“We also found an unusual antibody pattern in Elena’s blood. It may be related to the pregnancy, but I’ve never seen it before.”

Luke stared at him.

“Is she in danger?”

“I don’t know yet.”

A nurse approached carrying Elena’s torn coat in an evidence bag.

“We found something in the lining.”

It was the letter.

The same letter Luke would later read beside Elena’s hospital bed.

But this time, the missing lower half had not yet been found.

Luke unfolded the surviving page.

Trust no one.

Not even the ones who claim they are helping you.

And Luke…

There is something you need to know about the baby.

The rest was gone.

Luke looked through the glass toward Elena.

Her face was pale beneath the hospital lights.

He had found her.

But he was beginning to understand that the kidnapping had been only one part of something far older.

Something his father had begun.

May you like

Something his mother had fled to protect.

Or conceal.
