Chapter 14 - THE EMPIRE LUKE BURNED

Luke shut down Ashford Holdings before sunrise.
Every account connected to the family office was frozen.
Every private aircraft was grounded.
Every executive with access to the medical network received an emergency suspension.
The stock price collapsed within an hour.
Board members called from three continents.
Luke ignored them.
Marco entered the crisis room carrying a tablet.
“You just erased twelve billion dollars in market value.”
“Then Mercer will know I’m serious.”
“He may also know you are desperate.”
“I am.”
Detective Bennett coordinated police searches across the city.
Evelyn mapped every clinic, laboratory, and private residence once funded by Arthur.
There were forty-seven.
Only one facility had drawn emergency power during the hospital blackout.
A research center beneath the Ashford Foundation headquarters.
Luke knew the building well.
He had opened it beside Catherine three years earlier. Publicly, it studied rare childhood illnesses.
Privately, several underground levels did not appear on any approved blueprint.
Marco brought up the security plans.
“There’s one underground vehicle entrance.”
“Mercer will expect us there.”
“There may be an old service tunnel connecting to the river.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Arthur used it to transport equipment without inspection.”
Luke looked at Bennett.
“How many officers?”
“Enough to surround the building, not enough to enter an unknown laboratory without exposing hostages.”
“Elena does not have time.”
“We need evidence she is inside.”
Luke’s phone rang.
Adrian.
He answered.
“You should be in surgery.”
“I refused.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere Catherine cannot reach me.”
“What do you want?”
“To help.”
Luke almost ended the call.
Adrian spoke quickly.
“Mercer contacted me.”
“Why?”
“He thinks I still control the trust documents.”
“You don’t.”
“He may not know that.”
Luke looked at Marco.
“What did he say?”
“He wants me at the foundation building in one hour.”
“Alone?”
“With the original guardianship papers.”
“It’s a trap.”
“Obviously.”
Luke’s voice sharpened.
“Why tell me?”
Adrian was silent.
Then he said, “Because Elena saved my life at the airfield.”
Luke remembered the darkness.
The gunfire.
Adrian bleeding from the shoulder.
“What happened?”
“One of Catherine’s men aimed at me. Elena pulled the wheelchair into him. The shot missed my heart.”
“She should have let you die.”
“I know.”
Luke heard something unfamiliar in his brother’s voice.
Shame.
Adrian continued.
“I told myself I only wanted what Arthur promised my mother. Then I watched Elena bleeding because of decisions I made.”
“You poisoned her.”
“I redirected the supplements. Mercer changed the compound.”
“You still helped him reach her.”
“Yes.”
The admission carried no excuse.
Luke looked toward the image of the foundation building on the screen.
“Bring the papers.”
“They are forged.”
“Mercer won’t know until he sees them.”
“He will kill me.”
“Probably.”
Adrian laughed weakly.
“I suppose I earned that.”
Luke ended the call.
Bennett objected immediately.
“You cannot use him as bait.”
“He volunteered.”
“He is a prisoner.”
“He is also the only person Mercer expects.”
Evelyn studied the underground plans.
“There is another problem.”
She enlarged a section of the lowest level.
“The laboratory has an independent containment system. Mercer can seal the floor and remove the oxygen.”
Luke stared at the map.
“How long would Elena have?”
“Minutes.”
“Then we enter before Adrian arrives.”
Marco pointed toward the tunnel.
“This route ends beneath the containment level.”
Luke gathered his weapon.
Bennett blocked him.
“You are not leading a police operation.”
“This is not a police operation.”
“That is exactly why people keep dying.”
Luke stepped closer.
“My wife was taken from a hospital protected by your officers.”
Bennett’s face hardened.
“And she was targeted because your family spent decades operating above the law.”
They stared at each other.
Then Bennett moved aside.
“But you follow my commands once we are inside.”
Luke said nothing.
The river tunnel was partially flooded.
Luke, Marco, Bennett, and four tactical officers entered through a maintenance gate concealed beneath the foundation parking structure.
Evelyn remained at the command center to guide them.
At the same time, Adrian arrived at the front entrance carrying a leather case.
Mercer’s men escorted him inside.
Luke watched through a hacked camera feed.
Adrian looked pale from blood loss, but he continued walking.
The service tunnel ended at a rusted ladder.
Luke climbed first.
Above them was a circular laboratory filled with empty glass chambers.
At the center stood Elena.
She was conscious and strapped to a medical table.
A man in a dark suit adjusted equipment beside her.
Daniel Mercer.
The real one.
He was older than the man killed in the warehouse, with white hair and a scar along his jaw.
Catherine stood behind him.
This time, Luke knew it was truly his mother.
Elena saw him through the glass partition.
Her eyes widened.
Mercer followed her gaze.
He smiled.
Then he pressed a button.
Steel shutters dropped over every exit.
A warning light flashed.
CONTAINMENT SEQUENCE ACTIVE.
Bennett shouted into the radio.
“Override it.”
Evelyn’s voice answered.
“I’m trying.”
Mercer’s voice came through the laboratory speakers.
“Luke. Your father said you would eventually find this room.”
Luke raised his weapon toward the glass.
“Release her.”
“You inherited Arthur’s impatience.”
“And you inherited his cowardice.”
Mercer smiled.
“Arthur was many things. A coward was not one of them.”
Catherine stepped forward.
“Luke, listen to him.”
Luke looked at her.
“You ordered Elena’s death.”
“I tried to prevent something worse.”
“You ran.”
“I stayed to stop Mercer.”
Mercer laughed.
“She stayed because I have proof she killed Arthur.”
Luke stared at Catherine.
His father’s death had been ruled a heart attack.
Catherine’s face collapsed.
“He was going to take you too,” she whispered.
“Take me where?”
“To continue the trials.”
Mercer pressed another control.
The glass chamber around Elena began filling with white vapor.
She coughed.
Luke fired at the partition.
The bullet barely marked it.
“Evelyn!”
“I need thirty seconds.”
“Elena doesn’t have thirty seconds.”
Adrian’s voice suddenly came through the speakers.
“Then use me.”
On the camera feed, Adrian stood beside the main control panel with a gun pressed against his back.
He dropped the leather case.
Documents scattered across the floor.
Mercer turned.
Adrian drove his elbow into the guard and reached for the containment switch.
Catherine screamed.
A shot fired.
Adrian fell against the console.
The containment shutters lifted halfway.
Luke forced himself beneath one and entered the laboratory.
Mercer raised his weapon toward Elena.
Luke fired first.
The bullet struck Mercer’s arm.
Catherine rushed toward the medical table.
Another shot shattered the overhead lights.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Luke reached Elena and tore away the restraints.
“I have you.”
She clung to him.
Behind them, machinery sparked.
Bennett shouted for Mercer to drop his weapon.
A final gunshot echoed.
Then silence.
Emergency lights returned.
Mercer was gone.
A service door stood open behind the control station.
Catherine lay near the console, wounded but alive.
Adrian was missing.
Only a trail of blood led toward the service door.
Luke lifted Elena from the table.
She touched his face.
“You came.”
“I will always come.”
“Do not make promises while we’re running.”
Despite the terror around them, Luke almost laughed.
They escaped as the laboratory alarms began sounding.
Outside, the Ashford Foundation burned.
Luke watched flames rise through the windows of the empire his father built.
He felt no grief.
Only relief.
Then Marco approached carrying a phone recovered from the laboratory.
“There’s a video you need to see.”
On-screen, Arthur Ashford sat in the same underground room.
The recording date was seven years after his supposed death.
Luke stared at the image of his father.
Arthur looked directly into the camera.
“If Luke is watching this, then Mercer failed.”
Luke’s hands went cold.
May you like
Arthur continued.
“And Elena is finally carrying the child.”
