Chapter 6 - The Evidence Beneath the Concrete

Mason spent two nights in the hospital.

His fever came under control, and doctors found no serious injuries. Elena had a fractured wrist and severe bruising, but she was able to walk.

Victor stayed outside her room throughout the first night.

He did not call assistants or attend meetings. He sat in a plastic chair with his coat folded beside him, looking less like a billionaire than an exhausted father who had nearly lost his child.

At dawn, Elena found him watching Mason sleep.

“I should have told Daniel who you were,” she said.

Victor looked at her.

“Why?”

“Maybe he would have treated us differently.”

“That is exactly why you were right not to tell him.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“You warned me about him.”

“I judged him before I knew him. That pushed you away.”

“You were still right.”

“No. I was controlling. There is a difference.”

Victor sat beside her bed.

“Daniel’s choices belong to Daniel. Do not turn his failures into evidence against your own judgment.”

Elena had spent years imagining that returning to her father would feel like defeat.

Instead, it felt like coming home.

A detective arrived later that morning.

The documents recovered from the Royal Crest proved that Daniel had approved substandard materials, hidden engineering reports, and authorized payments to inspectors.

But the case became stronger when Vanessa contacted investigators.

Daniel had refused to answer her calls after learning Elena’s identity. He had also ordered a lawyer to describe Vanessa publicly as a minor employee with whom he had no personal relationship.

Vanessa responded by protecting herself.

She gave the police photographs of the original structural report, copies of private messages, payment records, and recordings of Daniel discussing the falsified inspection.

She also confirmed their affair.

Elena listened without expression.

The betrayal no longer shocked her.

Daniel had abandoned Vanessa emotionally almost as quickly as he had abandoned his wife and child physically.

He did not love Vanessa.

He loved whatever made him feel powerful.

That afternoon, Daniel arrived at Harrington Medical Center.

Security stopped him before he reached the private floor.

“I’m Elena’s husband.”

A guard checked the list.

“You are not approved.”

“My son is here.”

“You are not approved.”

Daniel raised his voice until Victor stepped from the elevator.

The hallway became silent.

Daniel straightened his torn jacket.

“Mr. Harrington, I think there has been a misunderstanding.”

Victor approached slowly.

“You left my daughter trapped beneath a collapsing building.”

“I was trying to help an injured employee.”

“You blocked a paramedic from helping your son.”

“Everything happened quickly.”

Victor stopped in front of him.

“Character is revealed by the decisions people make when there is no time to create excuses.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“Elena and I need to speak privately.”

“No.”

“She is my wife.”

“For now.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I didn’t know she was your daughter.”

Victor’s expression did not change.

“That is the only honest thing you have said.”
