Chapter 2 - The Secretary Who Knew Too Much

Vanessa entered Daniel’s office without knocking.

He was standing beside the window, looking across the city at the unfinished Royal Crest Hotel.

“You promised you would tell her,” Vanessa said.

Daniel did not turn around.

“Not yet.”

“You’ve been saying that for six months.”

“My divorce could become complicated.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Elena doesn’t even know how much your company is worth.”

“That’s why I need to be careful.”

Daniel had spent years hiding assets through subsidiary companies. On paper, his personal income appeared modest. His most valuable holdings were controlled through accounts Elena had never seen.

He told himself this was protection.

In reality, it was preparation.

Daniel intended to leave his wife with the house, a reasonable monthly payment, and nothing else.

Vanessa moved closer.

“The hotel opens next week. After that, there will always be another excuse.”

Daniel finally faced her.

“Once the opening ceremony is over, I’ll tell Elena.”

“And Mason?”

“He’ll adjust.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

She had never liked Mason.

The boy asked too many questions and appeared unexpectedly at Daniel’s office. Once, he had entered during a private lunch and found Vanessa sitting far too close to his father.

Daniel had convinced him they were reviewing documents.

Mason had believed him.

Elena would not be so easy to deceive.

Vanessa placed a folder on the desk.

“We have another problem.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was an engineering report from Dr. Samuel Reid, the independent structural consultant hired by the city.

The report warned that several steel connections inside the Royal Crest Hotel did not meet earthquake standards. The bolts used in the central support system had come from a supplier Daniel personally selected.

The cheaper materials had saved the company nearly four million dollars.

Daniel had used part of that money to cover debts from another development.

The rest had disappeared into private accounts.

“This report was supposed to come through me first,” Daniel said.

“It did.”

“Who else has seen it?”

“Reid. Two engineers. Possibly the city office.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Possibly?”

“I’m working on it.”

He moved to a cabinet, removed a bottle of whiskey, and poured a drink.

Vanessa watched him.

“What are you going to do?”

“The same thing everyone does when a problem appears before a major opening.”

“Fix the building?”

He gave her a cold look.

“Control the problem.”

Replacing the defective materials would delay the hotel for months. Investors would withdraw. The company’s share value would fall. Daniel’s position might not survive.

He could not allow that.

By evening, Dr. Reid received a revised contract offering him a large consulting payment. Two junior engineers were reassigned. A city inspector discovered a deposit in an offshore account created under his name.

The final safety certificate was approved forty-eight hours later.

Vanessa watched every step.

She told herself Daniel was protecting the future they would share.

Yet when she saw him destroy the original report, she secretly photographed each page before feeding it into the shredder.

Vanessa loved Daniel.

But she trusted money more.
