Chapter 4 - The Hotel That Was Never Safe

At first, the guests froze.
Then the marble floor rolled beneath them.
A chandelier tore free from the ceiling and crashed onto an empty table. Windows shattered. People screamed and ran toward the main entrance.
Elena grabbed Mason and dropped beside a reinforced column.
“Cover your head!”
Daniel shouted instructions from the stage, but panic swallowed his voice.
The hotel shook harder.
Elena looked upward and saw something no ordinary guest would have noticed.
The connection plates between the support beams were twisting.
They should have flexed under pressure.
Instead, bolts were snapping.
Her old training returned instantly.
The building was not responding like a newly constructed tower.
It was failing.
“Daniel!” she shouted. “The central frame is compromised! Get everyone away from the atrium!”
He stared at her.
“How would you know?”
“Move them now!”
A section of the upper balcony collapsed before he could answer.
The crowd scattered.
Elena lifted Mason and ran toward a service corridor. Daniel followed Vanessa toward the private elevator, though elevators were unsafe during an earthquake.
“Not that way!” Elena yelled.
A wall split between them.
Dust exploded through the lobby.
Elena pushed Mason beneath a heavy reception desk just as part of the ceiling fell. The impact knocked her sideways. Concrete trapped her shoulder and leg, but the desk protected Mason.
When the shaking stopped, darkness surrounded them.
“Mom?”
“I’m here.”
She reached through the narrow space and found his hand.
For several minutes, the only sounds were alarms, crying, and falling debris.
Then daylight appeared through a broken wall.
Rescuers reached the lower lobby.
Elena called out until a paramedic heard her.
He climbed over the rubble and examined Mason.
“He needs to get out first,” Elena said.
The paramedic nodded.
Before he could lift the boy, Daniel emerged from another corridor carrying Vanessa.
She had a bruise on her temple but was awake.
Vanessa saw Elena.
For one brief second, shame crossed her face.
Then she closed her eyes and allowed her body to go limp.
Daniel noticed the ambulance outside.
“She needs transport!” he shouted.
“The child comes first,” the paramedic replied.
Daniel looked at Mason.
Then at Vanessa.
The choice should have been impossible.
For Daniel, it took only seconds.
“My wife is being dramatic,” he said. “Vanessa goes first.”
Elena felt something inside her finally break.
Not her trust.
That had been cracking for months.
This was deeper.
It was the last part of her that still believed Daniel might become the man he had once pretended to be.
The ambulance left with Daniel and Vanessa.

Moments later, the hotel began shaking again.
Then the helicopter came.
