Chapter 8 - The Orchard

Sebastian agreed to go alone.

Quinn told him that was exactly what Eleanor expected. Clara told him she would never forgive him if he turned himself into another hostage. In the end, they created a compromise: Sebastian would enter visibly alone while agents approached through forest trails and an old irrigation tunnel shown on historic property maps.

The orchard lay beyond a mountain road buried in fog. Most of the apple trees were dead, their branches twisting over the abandoned retreat. The central building resembled a country hospital, with white columns and dark windows.

Sebastian carried no visible weapon. A transmitter had been sewn into his belt.

The front door opened before he knocked.

Dr. Adrian Cole stood inside.

"Your mother said you would come," he said.

"Where is the baby?"

"Safe for the moment."

Cole led him through a corridor lined with faded photographs of smiling mothers. Behind one locked door, Sebastian heard an infant cry. He moved toward it, but Cole raised a pistol.

"First, you meet your father."

Gabriel Vale sat in a wheelchair inside the old chapel. He was thinner than Sebastian remembered, his hair nearly white, but unmistakably alive. A scar crossed his hand. Another curved along his temple.

Sebastian stopped breathing.

Gabriel looked up and whispered his son's name.

The reunion contained no embrace. Cole remained too close, and seven years of grief stood between them.

Gabriel explained in fragments. Eleanor had sabotaged his boat, but Bellweather agents rescued him because he possessed information they needed. He was held in private clinics, drugged, moved, and declared dead. Six months earlier, Rose Mercer found him while searching Bellweather properties. Together they located part of the ledger.

Eleanor captured Gabriel again before he could contact Sebastian.

"Where is Rose?" Sebastian asked.

Gabriel's eyes shifted toward the altar.

A panel opened. Eleanor stepped into the chapel wearing a dark coat and a bandage around her palm. She appeared composed, almost serene.

"Rose is where she has always belonged," she said. "Outside this family."

Sebastian wanted to cross the room and end every threat with his hands. Instead, he remembered Clara on the floor beneath the banquet table. Rage had protected her once. Now discipline would protect their child.

"You forged Clara's signature. You drugged her. You tried to kill me."

Eleanor sighed. "I preserved what your father was too weak to preserve. Families like ours do not survive by obeying ordinary morality."

She offered him a bargain. Sign temporary guardianship papers. Publicly declare Clara unstable. In exchange, Maya's daughter would be returned and Gabriel released. Clara would be placed in a comfortable clinic after delivery. Sebastian could raise his son under Eleanor's guidance.

"And if I refuse?"

Cole opened the chapel door. A nurse wheeled in a bassinet. Maya's baby slept inside, a monitoring sensor taped to her tiny foot.

Eleanor placed a syringe on the altar.

"Then one child is lost tonight, and another will be taken at birth."

Sebastian approached the documents. The transmitter in his belt vibrated once, signaling that Quinn's team had entered the irrigation tunnel.

He picked up the pen.

Eleanor smiled.

Then Sebastian drove the pen through Cole's gun hand.

The pistol fired into the ceiling. Gabriel threw himself from the wheelchair, striking Eleanor's knees. Sebastian seized the bassinet and rolled it behind a stone column as agents breached the side doors.

Gunfire erupted in the corridor. Cole fled through the altar panel. Eleanor tried to reach the syringe, but Gabriel caught her wrist. For one second husband and wife stared at each other across decades of betrayal.

"You should have let me die," Gabriel said.

"I did," Eleanor replied.

She triggered a device beneath her sleeve.

Explosions shook the building. Smoke filled the chapel. The floor collapsed near the altar, separating Sebastian from Gabriel and Eleanor. Quinn reached the bassinet and carried the baby toward the exit. Sebastian crawled through debris, shouting for his father.

A hand emerged from the smoke.

He grabbed it and pulled.

Gabriel came through alone.

Eleanor had vanished into the lower tunnels.

Outside, Maya's daughter was examined and declared unharmed. The agents rescued two nurses held prisoner and recovered partial records, but Rose was not among them. Cole escaped in a medical transport vehicle before roadblocks closed.

Gabriel was flown to a secure hospital.

Before losing consciousness, he clutched Sebastian's sleeve.

"The ledger is not paper," he whispered. "Rose hid it in the blood."

Sebastian leaned closer.

At the edge of the orchard, agents found small metal plaques beneath the dead trees. Each carried a first name and a date, memorials to mothers who had died or disappeared after resisting Bellweather. Quinn photographed every plaque before the explosions damaged the grounds. Later, Clara would insist those names be read aloud in court, because a network built on erased women should not be dismantled while erasing them again.

"Whose blood?"

Gabriel's eyes opened once more.

"Your son's."
