Chapter 7 - The Betrayer Inside
The residence went into lockdown. Every bottle, meal, medication, and surface was tested. Phones were collected. Staff were separated and interviewed. Clara was moved to a secure room with Dr. Reyes and two agents whose identities had been verified independently.
Sebastian demanded to stay with her.
Clara said no.
It hurt him, but he obeyed.
Suspicion distorted every familiar face. Julian Cross had managed the Vale trust for eleven years. Lydia had hidden records and admitted meeting Eleanor. Even Detective Quinn had known details of the investigation before the attack on the cottage. Sebastian himself had access to Clara's water.
Quinn invited an outside federal team to conduct the inquiry so no one could accuse her of protecting herself.
The bottle carried a partial fingerprint. It belonged to Thomas Gray, a quiet security supervisor assigned to the kitchen corridor. Gray disappeared during the lockdown. His room contained cash, false identification, and photographs of Sebastian taken over several years.
Agents tracked him to a service tunnel beneath the residence. He was attempting to reach a waiting motorcycle when Quinn confronted him. Gray fired first. The bullet struck the wall beside her. She returned fire and wounded him in the leg.
Under interrogation, Gray admitted replacing Clara's water but claimed he had not known the drug's purpose. He received instructions through an encrypted phone. Payment came from a company controlled by Julian Cross.
Julian was arrested.
Sebastian reacted with disbelief. Julian had been his father's closest adviser, almost an uncle. He had helped Sebastian resist Eleanor's pressure during corporate disputes and had brought the trust documents voluntarily.
"That is why he was useful," Clara said. "He could tell us the truth only after choosing which truth to hide."
Julian denied ordering the poisoning. The shell company, he explained, had been created at Eleanor's request years earlier for legitimate estate expenses. He had lost control of one account. His mistake was negligence, not betrayal.
Quinn searched his office and found a hidden recorder beneath the conference table. It contained conversations between Julian and Eleanor. In one, Eleanor threatened to reveal that Julian's adopted daughter had come through Bellweather. In another, Julian agreed to alter the trust's default guardianship clause.
He had been compromised for years.
But the latest recording was different. Julian told Eleanor he would not help steal Clara's child. Eleanor responded that refusal no longer mattered because "the son has already opened the door."
Sebastian assumed she meant him.
Clara was not certain.
The phrase appeared again in a codebook found at Judge Sloane's house. In Bellweather terminology, son referred not to a male child, but to the next generation of an established Keeper. Someone younger had inherited a role in the network.
Dr. Adrian Cole was one possibility. Another was Theodore Pike, whose father had been a Bellweather donor. A third name appeared repeatedly in old correspondence: Gabriel Vale, Sebastian's late father.
Gabriel had officially died in a sailing accident seven years earlier. His body was never recovered.
Lydia revealed that Gabriel had discovered part of the adoption scheme before his death. He confronted Eleanor and planned to expose Bellweather. The next week, his boat was found shattered on rocks.
"What if he survived?" Clara asked.
Sebastian looked at her as though hope itself were dangerous.
Investigators reopened the accident file. The original search coordinator had been Theodore Pike. The identification of blood on the boat had been performed by Dr. Cole's father. Both men were connected to Bellweather.
A photograph recovered from the industrial site showed Eleanor meeting a gray-haired man beside a private train six months earlier. His face was turned away, but he wore Gabriel's signet ring.
Sebastian recognized the scar on the man's hand.
His father was alive.
Then Thomas Gray agreed to reveal the location called the orchard. It was an abandoned Bellweather maternity retreat in the mountains, once surrounded by apple trees. He provided a route and access code.
Before agents could move, Gray began convulsing. A capsule hidden beneath a dental crown had ruptured. He died within minutes.
His encrypted phone wiped itself.
Only one message remained on the screen.
Sebastian spent an hour reviewing his father's old corporate correspondence and discovered that Gabriel often wrote in two layers: polite business language above, warnings hidden in shipping codes below. Several letters urged Sebastian to question Eleanor, but he had read them only as criticism and filed them away. He understood then that control did not depend solely on lies. It also depended on teaching the victim to reject anyone who threatened the lie.
BRING SEBASTIAN TO THE ORCHARD ALONE, OR THE GIRL BECOMES SPARROW FOREVER.
