Chapter 10 - Labor Beneath the Vale Tower

The Vale tower rose over the city like a blade of black glass. Its executive floors were empty after federal agents ordered an evacuation. Beneath the underground parking structure, Gabriel's hidden medical suite waited behind a biometric door concealed in a concrete wall.

Eleanor knew the location, but she did not know the access sequence had been changed years earlier by Gabriel. That gave them a narrow advantage.

Clara was transported in an unmarked armored vehicle with Dr. Reyes, Quinn, and a surgical team verified through multiple agencies. Sebastian traveled separately to draw surveillance away. Gabriel remained under guard, guiding agents through old building plans.

The contractions intensified. Clara refused pain medication until every vial was tested. Even then, she chose the minimum. She had spent months having control taken from her in quiet pieces. Now every decision mattered.

Sebastian arrived through a service elevator and entered only after Clara agreed.

"I need you here," she said. "But you listen to me. Not your mother. Not the company. Not the trust. Me."

"You first," he promised. "Every time."

Above them, agents searched the tower for Eleanor and Rose. The live call had originated from the building, but the signal bounced across multiple floors. Cameras showed empty corridors and looping footage.

At 2:17 in the morning, Clara's water broke.

At 2:24, the building lost power.

Emergency generators started, but the medical suite remained dark. Someone had disconnected its circuit manually. Dr. Reyes switched to battery equipment while Sebastian and Quinn checked the corridor.

A voice came through the intercom.

Eleanor.

"You are delivering my grandson in a tomb," she said. "Open the door, and I will restore power."

Clara screamed through another contraction, then shouted toward the ceiling, "He is not yours."

The reply came softly. "Every Vale child belongs to the family before it belongs to its mother."

Sebastian struck the intercom panel until it broke.

The surgical team prepared for an emergency procedure. The baby's heart rate dipped, recovered, then dipped again. Dr. Reyes said they could continue briefly, but any further decline would require surgery.

Quinn discovered a maintenance shaft leading toward the generator room. She left two agents at the door and crawled into the shaft.

Minutes later, gunfire sounded above.

One of the agents opened the suite door to assist. The second followed when a wounded voice called Quinn's name.

Sebastian saw the mistake too late.

The wounded voice was a recording.

The corridor filled with gas.

Sebastian sealed the inner door, but one masked intruder had already entered through the ventilation hatch. The intruder moved toward Clara's IV line with a syringe. Sebastian tackled him into a cabinet. They fought among medical trays while Dr. Reyes shielded Clara.

The mask came off.

Theodore Pike stared up at him.

"Your mother promised all of us protection," Pike gasped.

"She protects no one."

Sebastian knocked the syringe away and restrained him with a cable. Under questioning, Pike revealed that Eleanor had arranged three extraction teams. One would take the baby. One would take the blood sample. The third would kill everyone and stage an electrical fire.

The building shook with an explosion above.

Dr. Reyes called Sebastian back. The baby's heart rate was falling.

Clara needed surgery now.

Power returned suddenly. Quinn had reached the generator, but her radio transmission carried bad news. Eleanor's people controlled the executive helipad. A helicopter waited on the roof.

The cesarean began.

Sebastian stood by Clara's head, holding her hand. She was conscious, terrified, and determined. The room narrowed to the sound of Dr. Reyes's instructions and the monitor's rhythm.

Then a baby's cry pierced the suite.

Clara sobbed.

Sebastian's knees nearly failed.

Dr. Reyes lifted their son for one brief second before moving him to the warmer. He was small but breathing, furious at the world, his fists clenched.

"His name is Daniel," Clara said, honoring her father.

Sebastian kissed her forehead. "Daniel."

A technician drew the required newborn blood panel while federal cyber specialists connected remotely. The three wafers were inserted. The archive began authentication.

Thirty percent.

Forty-two.

Sixty-one.

The medical suite door opened.

Quinn entered, weapon raised, with Rose Mercer beside her.

Rose's face was bruised, her wrists cut by restraints, but she was alive. She looked at Sebastian and stopped as if thirty years had collapsed into a single breath.

Before either could speak, the computer alarm sounded.

Authentication failed.

The screen displayed a parentage conflict.

Sebastian was not recognized as Daniel's biological father.

Between contractions, Clara made Dr. Reyes repeat each medical decision in plain language. She signed nothing without reading it. Sebastian watched her reclaim authority one question at a time. The scene lacked the spectacle of an overturned table, yet he understood it as the greater rebellion. Eleanor's power had always depended on making urgency feel like permission. Clara refused to let even fear take her consent away again.

Clara stared at the result.

May you like

Sebastian released her hand as though he had been burned.

From the broken intercom came Eleanor's laughter.
