Chapter 15 - The Door That Opened After Midnight

Mara called her parents.

No answer.

Local police were sent to their home, but the first responding unit lost radio contact two streets away. A second unit found the patrol car abandoned with both officers unconscious inside.

Kessler had planned for Mara.

Perhaps for years.

Audrey, Mara, Chloe, Grace, Thomas, and Julian were moved into the secure lower level of the Mercer facility while federal teams organized a rescue operation.

No one agreed on who held authority.

State police wanted immediate entry.

Federal officials insisted on negotiation.

An intelligence representative demanded custody of Chloe and Grace as protected research assets.

Audrey nearly struck him.

“They are witnesses and victims.”

“They are also carriers of classified neural technology.”

“They are people.”

The representative looked at the observation glass.

“That distinction may not remain legally simple.”

Audrey understood the threat.

Even if Kessler was stopped, the government might become the next jailer.

She returned to Chloe’s room.

Chloe sat in a medical chair beside Grace. Their monitors displayed nearly identical neural rhythms.

“You can hear each other?” Audrey asked.

“Sometimes,” Chloe said.

Grace nodded.

Mara paced near the door, repeatedly calling her parents.

Julian sat under guard in the corner.

His face was bruised, and bandages covered the burns on his arms.

“I know where Kessler is taking them,” he said.

Mara turned.

“Where?”

“Not their house.”

“The convoy is headed there.”

“To collect something.”

“What?”

Julian looked at Thomas.

“The original consent files.”

Thomas’s expression confirmed it.

Mara stepped toward him.

“My parents kept records?”

“They may have kept the documents from the hospital,” Thomas said. “Kessler needs to destroy proof that the signatures were forged.”

“Where will he take them afterward?”

Julian answered.

“The lake.”

Mara went still.

The place where Lily had supposedly drowned.

Julian explained that Evelyn had spoken about the lake during their drive to the facility. Beneath the old picnic area stood a Helix relay station constructed before the main campus.

Kessler could use it to upload the remaining neural data to an external network.

“If he uploads the system,” Thomas said, “Project 314 will no longer exist in one physical location.”

“It could be copied anywhere,” Audrey said.

“Yes.”

“Into people?”

“Potentially.”

Chloe touched the side of her head.

“He is already there.”

“How do you know?”

“I can feel the relay station.”

Audrey contacted the command team and demanded immediate deployment to the lake.

The federal representative refused.

“We have no verified intelligence that Kessler is present.”

“My sister can detect the network.”

“Your sister is not an approved intelligence source.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“I’m classified enough to imprison but not reliable enough to believe.”

Audrey made her decision.

She, Mara, and two trusted state officers would leave through the service tunnel. Lawson’s old gate token provided access to an unmonitored road.

Thomas insisted on joining them.

“No.”

“You will need me to disable the relay.”

“You created this nightmare.”

“That is why I have to end it.”

Julian rose.

“Take me too.”

Audrey looked at him.

“You’re still under arrest.”

“Kessler needs my genetic profile. He may keep Mara’s parents alive if he thinks I’m coming.”

“You are not bargaining with their lives.”

“I’m not. I know the relay layout.”

Thomas shook his head.

“You were never there.”

Julian smiled faintly.

“Mother took me when I was seventeen.”

Thomas stared at him.

“She told me I was the future of the project,” Julian continued. “She showed me the transfer chamber. She said one day I would carry memories from people more important than me.”

“Why didn’t you tell us before?” Audrey asked.

“Because I wanted it.”

The confession entered the room quietly.

Julian looked at Chloe.

“I spent my whole life believing something had been stolen from me. Dad’s attention. Mother’s respect. Audrey’s success. Chloe’s importance.”

His voice broke slightly.

“When Mother told me the project could make me exceptional, I believed her.”

Chloe said nothing.

Julian continued.

“Then the transfer tests started. I heard her memories. I felt her fear. I knew she remembered the landing.”

Audrey understood.

“You hurt her because you thought destroying her would erase the evidence inside you.”

“Yes.”

The simple answer was more terrible than an excuse.

Chloe turned away.

Audrey placed Julian back in restraints and brought him with them.

The group reached the lake shortly before midnight.

Rain fell through the trees.

The picnic area had been abandoned for years. The dock had collapsed, and warning signs surrounded the shoreline.

Chloe guided them through an earpiece from the facility.

“Walk toward the old boathouse,” she said. “The signal is beneath it.”

Inside the boathouse, Audrey found Mara’s parents tied to chairs.

They were alive.

Kessler stood near a concealed elevator with Captain Lawson and four armed men.

Lawson avoided Audrey’s eyes.

Mara raised her weapon.

“Let them go.”

Kessler held up a small drive.

“All Helix research. Every copied memory. Every subject file.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You cannot control it.”

“I do not need to control it. I only need buyers who believe they can.”

“You will create thousands of victims.”

Kessler smiled.

“Progress has always required victims.”

Audrey glanced at Lawson.

“You helped him escape.”

Lawson’s face was gray with exhaustion.

“He has my granddaughter.”

Kessler’s smile widened.

“Everyone has a reason.”

Mara’s mother began crying.

“Lily?”

Mara looked at her.

“She’s alive.”

Her father stared in disbelief.

“What?”

“She’s alive. But there is more than one survivor.”

Kessler pressed the elevator control.

“Touching reunion. Unfortunately, we are out of time.”

Julian stepped from behind Audrey.

Kessler looked pleased.

“You came.”

“You need me.”

“I did.”

“Not anymore?”

Kessler held up a small vial.

Inside was blood.

Julian’s blood.

Evelyn or Vale had collected it earlier.

“We completed your genetic profile years ago.”

Julian’s usefulness had always been an illusion.

Audrey saw the realization destroy something inside him.

Kessler entered the elevator.

Lawson suddenly fired at the nearest guard.

Chaos exploded through the boathouse.

Mara dragged her parents behind a support wall.

Audrey fired toward Kessler.

The bullet struck the elevator frame.

Thomas ran inside before the doors closed.

Julian followed him.

Audrey reached the elevator too late.

It descended beneath the lake.

Chloe’s voice came through the earpiece.

“The relay is activating.”

“How long until upload?”

“Six minutes.”

“Can you stop it?”

“Not from here.”

Audrey found the emergency ladder beneath the elevator shaft. She and Mara descended into the relay station while officers secured the boathouse.

The underground chamber was older than the Mercer facility. Water leaked through concrete walls. Thick cables disappeared beneath the lake.

They followed gunfire into the main control room.

Lawson lay wounded near the entrance.

Kessler stood on the upload platform.

Thomas struggled with Julian beside the control console.

“What are you doing?” Audrey shouted.

Thomas turned.

“He is trying to connect himself.”

Julian held a neural cable.

“If I enter the system, Chloe can follow the signal and destroy the upload.”

“You don’t know that.”

“She told me.”

Audrey touched her earpiece.

“Chloe?”

Her sister’s voice answered.

“He is right.”

“No.”

“Audrey, I can use his connection as a bridge.”

“It could kill him.”

Julian looked at her.

“That may be the point.”

Chloe spoke again.

“It could also trap me inside the relay.”

“No.”

“There isn’t another way.”

Kessler continued the upload.

72 percent.

Mara fired at the console.

A transparent shield blocked the bullet.

Thomas reached for the emergency shutdown.

Kessler shot him.

Thomas fell.

Audrey fired back.

Kessler disappeared behind the relay core.

Julian connected the cable to the medical port hidden beneath his hair.

He convulsed.

At the Mercer facility, Chloe screamed.

Every screen in the relay chamber illuminated.

Memories appeared across them.

Chloe on the kitchen floor.

Grace in the Nursery.

Mara at the lake.

Julian standing above the landing.

Evelyn beside a surgical table.

Thomas handing Lily to his wife.

Then other memories appeared.

Memories belonging to unknown children.

Unknown soldiers.

Unknown prisoners.

Project 314 had never contained only twelve subjects.

There were hundreds.

Upload status reached 91 percent.

Chloe’s voice filled the chamber.

“I found them.”

“Who?” Audrey asked.

“The others.”

The screens displayed a map.

Signal points appeared across the country.

Then across Europe.

Asia.

South America.

Helix implants existed all over the world.

Kessler laughed from behind the core.

“You thought this was a family secret.”

Upload status reached 96 percent.

Julian’s heart monitor failed.

Audrey ran toward him.

Chloe shouted through the speakers.

“Don’t disconnect him.”

“He’s dying.”

“I need ten more seconds.”

Thomas lay bleeding beside the console.

Mara tried to reach the manual shutdown.

Kessler emerged from the shadows and aimed at Chloe’s connection terminal.

Audrey fired first.

Kessler fell backward into the dark water beneath the relay platform.

No body surfaced.

Upload status reached 99 percent.

Then the screens went black.

The relay shut down.

Julian collapsed.

Audrey caught him before his head struck the floor.

“Julian.”

He did not respond.

“Chloe, is the upload stopped?”

Silence.

Audrey pressed the earpiece.

“Chloe?”

Nothing.

At the Mercer facility, alarms sounded inside Chloe’s medical room.

Grace screamed as Chloe’s neurological monitor went flat.

The signal points on the world map disappeared one by one.

Mara reached the main terminal.

A single message remained.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Audrey stared at the words.

“What transferred?”

No one answered.

Thomas struggled to sit up.

His face was pale from blood loss.

“It may not mean the upload.”

“Then what does it mean?”

Thomas looked at Julian’s motionless body.

Before he could answer, Julian opened his eyes.

Audrey froze.

His eyes moved across the chamber.

He looked at Thomas.

Then Mara.

Then Audrey.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

He reached up and touched Audrey’s face with trembling fingers.

When he spoke, the voice was Julian’s.

But the words were not.

“You found me,” he whispered.

Audrey stopped breathing.

Only one person had said those words to her in that exact tone when she was a child.

Her father.

Audrey slowly turned toward Thomas Mercer, who was still bleeding on the floor.

Julian smiled.

Then the dead relay system restarted by itself.

A woman’s face appeared on every screen.

Evelyn.

She was awake inside the secure medical unit.

And someone was standing behind her.

A man Audrey had never seen before held a divided-circle token against Evelyn’s throat.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Investigator Mercer,” he said, “Adrian Kessler was never the director of Helix.”

Behind him, a steel door opened.

Rows of medical beds extended into darkness.

Dozens of people sat up at the same time.

The stranger smiled.

“He was only Subject 001.”

The transmission ended.

CUT TO BLACK.
