Chapter 11 - Chloe Opens Her Eyes

At the hospital, Chloe lay motionless beneath white sheets.
Doctors believed she was unconscious.
Inside her mind, she was moving through the Helix system.
She could see the facility’s cameras, hear encrypted radio transmissions, and feel the pulse of machinery buried beneath the forest. Every connection arrived as light behind her eyes.
For years, the signals had seemed like nightmares.
Now she understood them.
The implant was not simply inside her.
It was part of her.
“Audrey,” Chloe said through the facility speakers, “Kessler has six men in the west corridor, four near the elevator, and two above the laboratory.”
Audrey looked at Thomas.
“Can she control the doors?”
“I don’t know.”
Chloe answered before he could finish.
“Yes.”
Steel barriers dropped across the west corridor, trapping six attackers.
Automatic fire struck the doors.
Mara repositioned the tactical team.
Kessler’s calm expression finally changed.
He looked directly at the nearest camera.
“Subject 314.”
“My name is Chloe.”
“You are confused.”
“I know exactly who you are.”
“You exist because of this project.”
“I survived despite it.”
Kessler raised the prepaid phone.
“You copied yourself into this device. Your biological body is no longer necessary.”
Chloe’s voice remained steady.
“You never completed the copy.”
Kessler glanced toward Evelyn.
She looked uncertain.
“The replication code was accepted,” he said.
“I gave you what I wanted you to have.”
Thomas stared at the neurological data.
“She altered the pattern during transfer.”
“Can she do that?” Audrey asked.
“She just did.”
Kessler moved toward the lower access corridor.
The countdown continued.
01:21:33.
Chloe opened a maintenance door behind Audrey’s group.
“This leads beneath the laboratory,” she said. “You can surround him.”
Audrey divided the team.
Mara and two officers moved through the maintenance route. Lawson remained with Thomas. Audrey escorted Julian toward the planned exchange point.
Before leaving, Thomas caught Audrey’s arm.
“Kessler will try to make you choose between the project and Chloe.”
“There is no choice.”
“There may be.”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Thomas looked toward the servers.
“The complete Helix network is linked to her implant. Destroying the system might destroy parts of her memory.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
“Her childhood?”
“Possibly.”
“Her identity?”
“Possibly.”
Audrey pulled away.
“You should have told us years ago.”
“Yes.”
Every answer Thomas gave seemed to contain a confession.
Audrey brought Julian into the central laboratory.
Kessler waited on the opposite platform with Evelyn and three armed men.
The remaining attackers were trapped behind Chloe’s security barriers or engaged with the tactical teams.
Audrey held the silver key.
Kessler looked at Julian.
“You appear nervous.”
Julian said nothing.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Give him the key, Audrey.”
“Why?”
“To save Chloe.”
“You spent years helping Julian hurt her.”
“I kept Julian close because Kessler needed him.”
Julian turned toward his mother.
“You knew they planned to erase me?”
Evelyn’s expression remained controlled.
“They planned to combine the two patterns.”
“You told me I would become stronger.”
“You would have.”
“I would disappear.”
“You do not know that.”
Julian laughed once.
It sounded broken.
Audrey held up the key.
“Stop the reset.”
Kessler entered a code into his wrist device.
The countdown paused at 01:04:09.
“Now send Julian across.”
“The key first,” Evelyn said.
“No,” Kessler replied. “Julian.”
Evelyn looked at him.
A subtle conflict passed between them.
Audrey saw it.
They did not trust each other.
Julian walked halfway across the platform.
Then he stopped.
Kessler lifted his weapon.
“Continue.”
Julian looked toward Audrey.
She gave the smallest nod.
Chloe closed the blast door behind Kessler’s armed men.
Mara emerged from the lower passage and fired.
The laboratory erupted.
Audrey pulled Julian behind a steel console.
Bullets shattered glass panels.
Evelyn ran toward the server corridor.
Kessler fired at Mara, then disappeared behind the central reactor housing.
Audrey pursued him.
She found him near the neurological interface chamber.
He held a pistol in one hand and a small transmitter in the other.
“Drop the key,” he said.
Audrey aimed at his chest.
“Drop the transmitter.”
“If my hand opens, the hospital reset activates.”
Audrey stopped.
Kessler smiled.
“You see? There is always a choice.”
Chloe’s voice came through a nearby speaker.
“He’s lying.”
Kessler’s smile vanished.
Chloe continued.
“The transmitter controls the explosive charges beneath the server room.”
Audrey fired.
The bullet struck Kessler’s shoulder.
He fell but pressed the transmitter.
An explosion tore through the lower level.
The platform collapsed beneath Audrey.
She grabbed a railing with one hand.
The silver key slipped from her fingers and fell into the darkness below.
Kessler crawled toward the edge.
“You lost it,” he said.
Then another hand reached from beneath the platform.
Julian caught the key.
He looked up at Audrey.
For one second, brother and sister stared at each other through smoke and fire.
Then Evelyn appeared behind Julian.
She struck him with a metal bar.
Julian fell.
May you like
Evelyn took the key.
And ran.
