Chapter 14 - The Sister With Two Names

Audrey raced back to the hospital with Mara, Thomas, and the tactical team.
Julian and Grace were transported separately under armed guard. Evelyn remained unconscious at the facility and was placed in federal medical custody.
The hospital went into lockdown before Audrey arrived.
Vale had entered using the credentials of a neurosurgeon who died earlier that morning in a car accident.
He spent less than ninety seconds inside Chloe’s room.
By the time security officers entered, he was gone.
Chloe remained alive.
But the implant had stopped transmitting.
She did not wake.
Doctors detected normal brain activity, yet she showed no response to sound, pain, or touch.
Thomas examined the black residue left near the implant site.
“Vale isolated her from the network.”
“Can you reconnect her?” Audrey asked.
“Not here.”
“Where?”
“The main Helix interface at the facility.”
“The place Kessler just attacked?”
“Yes.”
Mara stood beside Chloe’s bed.
“What about Grace?”
“Her interface may provide a bridge.”
“You want to connect them?”
“It may be the only way to restore Chloe’s access.”
Audrey looked at Grace through the glass of the neighboring treatment room.
The young woman sat beneath a blanket, surrounded by equipment she had never seen outside the Nursery. She watched nurses with suspicion.
“She has already been used enough.”
Thomas did not argue.
Audrey entered Grace’s room.
“Do you understand what happened to Chloe?”
Grace nodded.
“I cannot hear her anymore.”
“You could hear her before?”
“Sometimes. Like thoughts behind a wall.”
“Dad believes your interface might help reconnect her.”
“Will it hurt?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will I become her?”
“I won’t let that happen.”
Grace studied Audrey’s face.
“You cannot promise that.”
“No.”
The honesty seemed to calm her.
Grace looked through the glass at Mara.
“Is she my sister?”
“She is Lily’s biological sister.”
“Am I Lily?”
Audrey sat down.
“You carry some of her memories.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No. It isn’t.”
Grace pressed both hands together.
“When I remember the lake, I feel love for Mara. When I remember the Mercer house, I feel afraid of Julian. When I remember you reading stories, I miss you.”
Audrey’s throat tightened.
“But those things happened to Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“Then what belongs to me?”
“Whatever you choose now.”
Grace looked down.
“I choose to help her.”
The procedure was prepared at the Mercer facility because no other system could interface with both implants.
Federal agents took control of the campus, although Audrey noticed several officials from unnamed agencies arriving with sealed orders. Project 314 had become a national-security matter.
That meant truth could disappear again.
Audrey recorded every document she could before access was restricted.
Thomas connected Chloe and Grace to parallel neural platforms.
Mara stood beside Grace.
Audrey stood beside Chloe.
Julian watched from behind reinforced glass, his wrists restrained. Prosecutors had delayed formal charging while he cooperated, but he remained responsible for the assault and financial exploitation.
Before the procedure began, Chloe’s fingers moved.
Audrey leaned closer.
“Chloe?”
Her eyes remained closed.
A faint sound escaped her lips.
“Not Dad.”
Audrey turned toward Thomas.
“What did she say?”
Thomas adjusted the interface cables.
“I didn’t hear.”
Audrey had.
Not Dad.
The system activated.
Lights moved across both platforms.
Grace screamed.
Chloe’s body arched.
Images flooded the central screen: two childhoods, overlapping and separating.
The lake.
The Mercer kitchen.
The Nursery.
Mara singing.
Audrey holding a picture book.
Vale standing beneath surgical lights.
Then a new memory appeared.
Thomas carried four-year-old Lily through a corridor while alarms sounded.
Evelyn followed.
They were not rescuing her.
They were taking her.
Audrey looked at Thomas.
“You told me Vale brought her to the program.”
“He did.”
“You were there when she was stolen from the hospital.”
“I believed she had no chance of survival.”
“That was not your decision.”
“No.”
On the screen, Thomas handed the unconscious child to Evelyn.
Evelyn asked, “What will we tell Audrey and Julian?”
Thomas answered:
“We’ll tell them she is their sister.”
Audrey stepped away from the platform.
Every foundation of her childhood had been built deliberately.
Not through confusion.
Not through desperation.
Through a plan.
The procedure alarms sounded.
Thomas turned back to the controls.
“Grace’s identity pattern is destabilizing.”
“What does that mean?” Mara demanded.
“One pattern is trying to dominate the other.”
“Stop it.”
“If I stop now, both may be lost.”
Grace’s eyes opened.
They were filled with terror.
She looked toward Mara.
“I remember dying.”
Mara pressed her hand against the glass.
“You didn’t die.”
“I remember the water.”
“That happened to Lily.”
Grace began to cry.
Chloe’s eyes opened on the other platform.
She turned her head toward Grace.
“No,” Chloe whispered. “It happened to us.”
The system stabilized.
Both women remained conscious.
Thomas disconnected the interface.
Audrey rushed to Chloe.
Her sister looked weak but aware.
“Do you know who you are?”
“Chloe.”
She looked at Mara.
“And Lily.”
Mara entered the chamber.
She stood between the two beds, looking from Chloe to Grace.
No one knew what to say.
A federal agent interrupted them.
“We have a situation.”
Audrey followed him into the control room.
Surveillance showed a convoy leaving Evelyn’s original house twenty minutes earlier. Investigators had believed the house empty.
Six unidentified people had emerged from a concealed basement entrance.
One carried a hard case marked with the Helix symbol.
Another appeared to be Captain Lawson.
He was alive.
And walking willingly beside Kessler.
The convoy separated on the highway.

The other headed toward Mara’s parents’ home.
