Chapter 7 - The Name on the Safe

The key opened a private storage facility.
Unit 317.
The facility was located forty minutes outside the city.
Lena and Daniel arrived just before sunset.
The manager looked nervous when Lena gave him the key.
“You're authorized?”
Lena showed him her identification.
He checked the computer.
Then looked at her.
“You've been listed on this unit for ten years.”
Lena stared at him.
“I've never been here.”
The manager swallowed.
“Your father came every few months.”
“What did he store?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel asked, “Who else had access?”
The manager hesitated.
“One other person.”
“Who?”
He looked at the file.
“Susan Carter.”
Lena closed her eyes.
Her mother.
Again.
They opened the unit.
Inside was a metal safe.
Nothing else.
No boxes.
No furniture.
Just one enormous safe bolted to the floor.
The number 317 had been engraved into its front.
Lena inserted the key.
It opened.
Inside were dozens of envelopes.
Each one had a date.
The earliest was dated ten years earlier.
The year Lena turned eighteen.
She picked up the first envelope.
It contained a photograph.
Her grandfather.
Standing beside Robert.
On the back was a handwritten note.
He knows.
The next envelope contained another photograph.
This time, Robert was standing beside a lawyer Lena had never seen.
Another note.
He changed the documents.
Another.
He moved the money.
Another.
He lied to her.
Lena's hands trembled.
Daniel opened another envelope.
Inside was a recording device.
He pressed the button.
Her grandfather's voice filled the small storage unit.
“If you're hearing this, then I wasn't able to protect Lena myself.”
Lena froze.
Her grandfather continued.
“Robert will tell her that everything I did was for the family.”
A pause.
“He will say I was sick.”
Another pause.
“He will say I didn't understand the modern business world.”
Lena felt tears forming.
“He will lie.”
The recording continued.
“The truth is that I discovered Robert had been using family assets to cover personal debts.”
Daniel looked at Lena.
Her grandfather's voice became quieter.
“I confronted him.”
A long silence.
“Then he threatened me.”
Lena covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“I am leaving evidence in several places. Not because I expect Lena to use it against her father.”
A pause.
“But because I know Robert will eventually come after her.”
The recording ended.
Lena looked at Daniel.
“What personal debts?”
Daniel opened another envelope.
Inside was a list.
Loans.
Private lenders.
Unpaid obligations.
And one name repeated again and again.
Carter Holdings.
Lena looked at the figures.
Her father had been drowning in debt.
But that still didn't explain why he demanded half her salary.
Then she found the final document.
It was a loan agreement.
Borrower:
Lena Carter.
Lena's face went blank.
“I never took this loan.”
Daniel read the document.
His expression changed.
“This was signed last year.”
“That isn't my signature.”
“No.”
Daniel pointed to the lender.
Lena stared.
The lender was a private investment company.
The company was owned by someone whose name she recognized.
Mark Carter.
Her cousin.
Lena's blood ran cold.
“My cousin lent money to my father using my name.”
Daniel nodded.
“And if this document is legitimate in the system, you are responsible for the debt.”
Lena sat down.
“That means the salary demand…”
“Wasn't about helping your parents.”
“It was about paying a debt I never created.”
Daniel looked at the paperwork.
“There's more.”
He found another page.
Lena leaned closer.
At the bottom was an authorization clause.
If Lena failed to make the required payments, ownership of certain assets would automatically transfer.
“What assets?”
Daniel turned the page.
Lena's house.
Her investments.
Her retirement account.
And the Carter family properties held in trust.
Lena stared.
“They're trying to take everything.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not everything.”
He pointed to one line.
“They already believe they own it.”
Then the storage facility lights went out.
Lena froze.
Daniel stood.
May you like
Someone had locked the main entrance from outside.
And footsteps were approaching the unit.
