Chapter 14 - Beneath the House

They returned to the Carter house before dawn.
Robert refused to enter.
Lena did.
The house looked exactly as it always had.
But now every wall seemed to conceal something.
Every photograph.
Every floorboard.
Every locked drawer.
Daniel followed Lena to the basement.
The old foundation was behind a row of shelves.
Lena remembered her grandfather once telling her never to move them.
She moved them.
Behind the shelves was a steel door.
No handle.
No lock.
Just a small fingerprint scanner.
Lena stared.
“How did he know?”
Daniel whispered:
“Because he built it for you.”
Lena placed her hand on the scanner.
Nothing happened.
Emily stepped forward.
“Try mine.”
Lena looked at her.
Emily placed her hand against the scanner.
Nothing.
Daniel tried.
Nothing.
Then Lena remembered the photograph.
She looked at the image of her grandfather.
There was something unusual about his hand.
A ring.
Lena touched the ring on the photograph.
Her grandfather had worn it for decades.
She remembered the ring.
It was still in her father's possession.
Lena turned toward Robert.
“Give me the ring.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“No.”
Emily stepped forward.
“You don't get to decide anymore.”
Robert looked at her.
Then at Lena.
Slowly, he removed the ring from his pocket.
Lena took it.
She pressed it against the scanner.
The steel door opened.
Inside was a narrow room.
No money.
No gold.
No valuables.
Only files.
Hundreds of them.
Each file carried a name.
Robert.
Susan.
Mark.
Richard.
Emily.
Ethan.
And Lena.
Lena picked up her own file.
Inside were records dating back to her childhood.
School records.
Medical records.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Letters.
Everything.
She turned toward Robert.
“You monitored me.”
Robert looked away.
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
Lena opened another folder.
Inside was a contract.
A contract stating that if Lena ever challenged the family estate, Robert would declare her mentally incompetent.
Lena stared at him.
“You planned this.”
Robert didn't answer.
Emily opened her file.
Her expression changed.
She found documents proving that Robert had arranged for her to be sent away.
Not because she was dangerous.
Because she knew about the money.
Daniel found another file.
“Lena.”
She turned.
He held up a document.
“This is the original trust.”
The real one.
The one that had never been amended.
The one that proved Lena and Emily jointly controlled the estate.
But there was another clause.
If either sister challenged the other, the assets would be frozen.
Lena looked at Emily.
Emily looked at her.
“So that's why he kept us apart.”
Lena nodded.
“He needed us to fight.”
Robert suddenly spoke.
“I never wanted that.”
Lena turned.
“You separated sisters.”
“I had no choice.”
“Why?”
Robert looked at the floor.
“Because someone else was forcing me.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
Robert didn't answer.
Then Susan entered the vault.
She was holding a letter.
“I found this upstairs.”
Lena took it.
The handwriting belonged to her grandfather.
But the date was recent.
Only three months ago.
That was impossible.
Unless her grandfather hadn't written it.
Lena opened it.
One sentence.
If you have reached the vault, then the person who has been controlling your family is already inside the house.
Everyone looked around.
Daniel immediately locked the vault door.
Too late.
The lights went out.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Then the voice of a woman echoed through the darkness.
“You finally found it.”
Lena's blood ran cold.
The lights came back.
A woman stood at the entrance.
She looked at Susan.
Then Robert.
Then Lena.
Her expression was calm.
She held a photograph.
Lena recognized her.
Samantha Carter.
The woman Robert claimed was dead.
Samantha smiled.
“You've been asking the wrong questions.”
Lena stared.
“What do you want?”
Samantha looked at the files.
“Your grandfather made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He trusted the wrong daughter.”
Lena looked at Susan.
Samantha smiled.
“Not Susan.”
May you like
Then she looked directly at Lena.
“You.”
