Chapter 11 - The Child Nobody Mentioned

Lena couldn't speak.

The photograph trembled in her hands.

Susan covered her mouth.

Richard looked away.

Daniel stared at the image.

“Who is the baby?”

Lena finally asked.

Susan began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

“Who is she?”

Susan shook her head.

“It's not that simple.”

Lena's voice rose.

“Who is the baby?”

Susan whispered a name.

Emily.

Lena stared.

“My sister?”

Susan nodded.

The world seemed to become silent.

She had spent twenty-eight years believing she was an only child.

There had never been another bedroom.

No childhood photographs.

No mention.

Nothing.

“Where is she?”

Susan couldn't answer.

Richard spoke.

“She was taken away.”

Lena turned.

“By whom?”

“Your grandfather.”

Lena stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because he believed Robert was dangerous.”

Susan shook her head.

“That isn't the whole truth.”

Richard looked at her.

“Then tell her.”

Susan cried harder.

“Emily wasn't Robert's daughter.”

Lena's breath caught.

“Whose daughter was she?”

Susan closed her eyes.

“Your grandfather's.”

Silence.

Daniel looked shocked.

Lena could barely process the words.

Her grandfather had another daughter.

Her mother had hidden her.

Robert had known.

And somehow, that secret was connected to the trust.

Susan explained that Emily had been born before Robert and Susan married.

Her grandfather had wanted to raise her privately because of a family scandal.

But when Robert learned about her, he used the information to manipulate everyone.

He threatened to expose the family.

Then Emily disappeared.

Lena stared at the photograph.

“Where is she now?”

Susan whispered:

“I don't know.”

Richard said, “She is alive.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“How do you know?”

“Because she contacted me.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

Lena stepped closer.

“What did she say?”

Richard looked at her.

“She said she was coming home.”

Lena's heart raced.

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Why did she contact you?”

Richard's expression became serious.

“Because she knows what happened to the money.”

Lena felt cold.

“What money?”

“The money your grandfather left for both of you.”

Lena looked at Susan.

Susan shook her head.

“There was money for Emily too.”

Richard nodded.

“Your grandfather divided the estate into two trusts.”

“One for me.”

“And one for Emily.”

“Then why did Robert take mine?”

“Because yours was accessible.”

“And hers?”

Richard's eyes hardened.

“Untouchable.”

Lena suddenly understood.

The second trust.

The hidden trust.

It wasn't only hers.

It belonged to both sisters.

And if Emily returned, the entire structure Robert had built would collapse.

Richard reached into his coat.

He handed Lena a photograph.

Emily as an adult.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same small crease beside the left cheek.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

She knows who stole the money.

Lena looked up.

“Where did you get this?”

Richard answered:

“She sent it to your father.”

Lena's blood ran cold.

“What did she want?”

Richard looked toward the window.

“She wanted him to confess.”

A car suddenly stopped outside.

Susan looked through the glass.

Her face changed.

“That's Robert.”

Lena turned.

But Daniel was already moving toward the door.

“Wait.”

A second car pulled up behind Robert's.

A woman stepped out.

Lena couldn't see her face.

But Susan did.

May you like

She whispered one word.

“Emily.”
