Chapter 8 - The Price of a Child

News of Brenda’s arrest spread through the family before sunrise.
Relatives who had ignored Amelia’s calls after the mall incident suddenly sent messages of support.
Some claimed they had always distrusted Brenda.
Others said the situation was a tragic misunderstanding.
Amelia answered none of them.
She had learned that families often discovered principles only after the evidence became impossible to deny.
Brenda was released on bail with orders to stay away from Amelia, Lily, Richard, and the preschool.
Marcus Pell surrendered later that afternoon.
Through his attorney, he claimed Brenda misled him and that he believed the adoption petition was based on legitimate concerns.
The printed messages contradicted him.
Elaine Harper was suspended from the preschool after admitting she provided attendance records in exchange for five thousand dollars.
She insisted she had not known about the mall plan.
No one seemed to know anything until consequences arrived.
Richard remained hospitalized for two days.
During that time, investigators searched Brenda’s home.
They found copies of Amelia’s work schedule, photographs of Lily entering preschool, records of Amelia’s rent payments, and a partially completed emergency custody filing.
They also found a locked metal box hidden beneath Brenda’s bedroom floor.
The box contained jewelry, old identification documents, and letters written by Elena.
Amelia was permitted to view digital copies.
The earliest letters were hopeful.
Elena wrote about her baby, whom she named Rose.
She described Rose’s dark hair, tiny hands, and habit of falling asleep only when held against Elena’s chest.
Then the letters became desperate.
Father says the adoption is final, but I never signed the last page.
Brenda says she knows a couple who will return Rose if I pay them.
She wants me to take money from Richard.
Another letter read:
Brenda lied. There is no couple. She said Rose is gone and I should be grateful no one knows.
The final letter was addressed to Amelia’s father.
Thomas, I am meeting Brenda tonight. She has Rose’s new address. If I do not come back, do not believe anything she says.
Amelia’s hands shook as she read it.
The date matched the night Elena disappeared.
“What did Brenda say about the letters?” Amelia asked the detective.
“She claims Elena was unstable and fabricated accusations.”
“Where is Elena?”
“We don’t know.”
“Where is Rose?”
“We don’t know that either.”
Richard joined Amelia at the police station after being discharged.
He walked with a cane because of dizziness from the concussion.
When he saw the letters, he sat down heavily.
“Your father searched for this box,” he said.
“Brenda kept it all these years.”
“She keeps trophies.”
Amelia looked at him.
“Trophies?”
Richard stared through the interview room window.
“When we were children, Brenda took things from people after arguments. Small things. A necklace. A photograph. A letter. She said it proved she had won.”
Amelia thought of Elena’s passport.
The photograph of Rose.
The documents from the adoption plan.
“Why did everyone keep protecting her?”
Richard did not defend himself.
“Because confronting Brenda was exhausting. Because she punished anyone who challenged her. Because money could repair many of the problems she caused.”
“Not Elena.”
“No.”
“Not Lily.”
“No.”
Amelia closed the file.
That evening, she brought Lily to a child therapist named Dr. Serena Walsh.
The office contained soft cushions, wooden toys, and a small indoor tent.
Lily barely spoke during the first session.
She placed a toy woman beside a toy fountain and moved all the other figures far away.
“Who is that?” Dr. Walsh asked.
“Little girl.”
“Is she waiting for someone?”
Lily nodded.
“Who?”
“Grandma.”
“Does Grandma come back?”
Lily pushed the grandmother figure into a toy car and moved it away.
“No.”
Amelia watched from behind a one-way observation window, crying silently.
Dr. Walsh helped Lily place a mother figure beside the child.
The little girl immediately moved both figures into the toy house.
Then she put a plastic dragon outside the door.
“Who is the dragon?” Dr. Walsh asked.
Lily whispered, “Grandma.”
That night, Amelia received a voicemail from an unknown number.
The caller was a woman.

Her voice trembled.
“My name is Grace Bell. I saw the story about Brenda’s arrest. I think I may be Elena Hart’s daughter.”
