Chapter 10 - The White House

Lily could not provide an address.

She remembered blue windows, a stone bird near the steps, and a room filled with dolls.

Dr. Walsh used drawings rather than direct questioning.

Lily drew the white house.

She drew Brenda.

She drew a tall man with brown hair.

Then she drew a woman with a circle around her stomach.

“Is the woman pregnant?” Dr. Walsh asked.

Lily nodded.

“What did Grandma call her?”

“New Mommy.”

The revelation transformed the investigation.

Brenda had not merely intended to adopt Lily herself.

She had been showing Lily to another family.

Police reviewed traffic camera footage from days when Brenda had watched her.

A vehicle registered to Brenda appeared twice in a gated neighborhood north of the city.

One property matched Lily’s description.

White exterior.

Blue shutters.

Stone eagle beside the steps.

The owners were Nathan and Celeste Rowland.

Nathan Rowland was a property developer.

Celeste was seven months pregnant.

When questioned, they initially denied meeting Lily.

Then police found messages between Celeste and Brenda.

Celeste had paid Brenda one hundred thousand dollars.

The payment was described as a consulting fee.

Brenda claimed it was for interior design.

Celeste eventually confessed.

She said Brenda told her Amelia was dying from a heart condition and wanted Lily raised by a wealthy family.

According to Brenda, the adoption would be private and discreet to protect Amelia’s dignity.

Celeste admitted meeting Lily twice.

“Why adopt a child when she was already pregnant?” Amelia asked the detective.

“Celeste experienced several previous miscarriages. She said she wanted to guarantee she would have a daughter.”

The phrase made Amelia feel physically ill.

Guarantee she would have a daughter.

Lily was not a product.

She was not insurance against grief.

She was a child.

Nathan Rowland denied knowledge of the payment.

His financial records suggested otherwise.

Marcus Pell had prepared separate documents naming the Rowlands as prospective adoptive parents.

Brenda would first obtain emergency guardianship.

Then she would transfer custody privately.

In exchange, the Rowlands would pay Brenda another two million dollars after gaining access to Lily’s trust distributions.

The plan was more elaborate than anyone expected.

Brenda had intended to profit twice.

First by controlling the trust temporarily.

Then by selling access to Lily permanently.

Amelia sat in the police interview room while the detective explained the evidence.

She felt strangely calm.

The horror had become too large for ordinary anger.

“Will they be charged?” she asked.

“The prosecutor is reviewing conspiracy, attempted custodial interference, fraud, unlawful surveillance, child endangerment, and other offenses.”

“And Brenda?”

“The same, with additional charges.”

Amelia looked through the glass.

Brenda sat in another room with her attorney.

She appeared annoyed rather than frightened.

As though the legal system were simply another relative refusing to cooperate.

The adoption hearing resumed two days later.

This time, the Rowland documents were admitted under seal.

Elaine Harper withdrew part of her testimony after prosecutors warned her that lying under oath could lead to additional charges.

She admitted Brenda instructed her to exaggerate Amelia’s behavior.

The judge dismissed Brenda’s adoption petition with prejudice.

She also issued a long-term protective order barring Brenda from contacting Lily.

Amelia should have felt relief.

Instead, she looked at Brenda across the courtroom and wondered what would happen when a woman who had never accepted consequences finally lost everything.

Outside, reporters waited behind barriers.

Richard’s attorneys guided Amelia and Lily toward a private vehicle.

Grace walked beside them.

Lily held Amelia’s hand with one hand and Grace’s with the other.

At the car, Grace crouched.

“You were very brave,” she told Lily.

Lily studied her face.

“Are you my aunt?”

Grace glanced at Amelia.

“In a way.”

Lily accepted this.

“Do you have ladybugs?”

“No.”

“You can have mine when police finish.”

Grace laughed through tears.

“I would like that.”

As Amelia buckled Lily into her seat, her phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from Brenda’s number despite the protective order.

There were no words.

Only a photograph.

May you like

It showed Lily asleep in her bedroom.

The picture had been taken from inside Amelia’s apartment the previous night.
