Chapter 14 - Brenda’s Final Bargain
Brenda requested a private meeting with Amelia.
The prosecutor advised against it.
Richard strongly opposed it.
Dr. Walsh warned Amelia not to let curiosity become another form of control Brenda exercised over her.
Amelia understood all of that.
She agreed anyway, under strict conditions.
The meeting took place in a secured interview room at the county detention center.
A glass partition separated them.
Cameras recorded everything.
Brenda entered slowly and picked up the telephone.
Her hair had gone gray at the roots.
Without makeup and expensive clothing, she looked smaller.
But her eyes remained sharp.
Amelia lifted her phone.
“You had someone approach Lily.”
Brenda smiled faintly.
“So you received the ring.”
“Who was he?”
“I can tell you.”
“Then tell me.”
“In exchange for something.”
Amelia almost laughed.
“You are facing trial for kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, child endangerment, unlawful surveillance, and possibly murder. You have nothing left to bargain with.”
“I have the truth.”
“Your truth changes every time you need something.”
Brenda leaned closer to the glass.
“You think Richard is the hero now?”
“This is not about Richard.”
“Everything is about Richard. He controlled the money. He decided who deserved rescuing.”
“You sold Elena’s baby.”
“I found that baby a home.”
“You took money.”
“I was seventeen.”
“And Elena?”
Brenda’s mouth tightened.
“Her death was an accident.”
“Who was with you?”
Brenda glanced toward the camera.
“You want the name? Withdraw your statement regarding Lily.”
“No.”
“Ask prosecutors to reduce the child-related charges.”
“No.”
“You would sacrifice the truth about Elena for revenge?”
“I will not sacrifice Lily for anything.”
For the first time, Brenda’s confidence cracked.
She expected Amelia to be tempted.
She expected every person to have a price because Brenda always did.
Amelia continued.
“You abandoned my daughter to create evidence against me. You recorded us. You planned to transfer her to strangers. You prepared a false passport. Whatever happens to you is not revenge. It is consequence.”
Brenda’s face became hard.
“You think Lily will thank you when she grows up without a family?”
“She has a family.”
“Richard will die. Grace is a stranger. Kendra will betray you the moment she needs money.”
“Then Lily will still have me.”
Brenda smiled cruelly.
“Until she learns what you did.”
Amelia’s stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Ask Richard why your father changed the trust six days before his death.”
Amelia said nothing.
“Ask why Thomas removed your name as a direct beneficiary.”
“The trust was for descendants.”
“That is what Richard told you.”
Brenda lowered her voice.
“Your father believed Lily was not supposed to exist.”
Amelia gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“You were not the only person who knew you were pregnant.”
Amelia remembered her father’s final months.
She had discovered her pregnancy shortly before his death but had told almost no one.
Lily’s father, Noah Bennett, died in a construction accident before Lily was born.
Amelia had always believed her father never knew.
Brenda watched understanding move across her face.
“Thomas knew,” she said. “And he was terrified.”
“Of what?”
“Of Lily’s father.”
“Noah was not dangerous.”
“Noah Bennett was not his real name.”
The guard announced that the meeting time was ending.
Brenda spoke rapidly.
“The man wearing Samuel’s ring knows who Noah was. He knows why your father changed the trust. He knows why Elena died.”
“Give me his name.”
Brenda smiled.
“Bring me a photograph of Lily on her next birthday.”
Amelia stood.
“You will never receive another photograph of her.”
“Then you will never find him.”
Amelia placed the phone back in its cradle.
Brenda struck the glass.
“You need me!”
Amelia looked at her mother for the last time.
“No. That is the lie you built your entire life around.”
She walked out.
Three months later, Brenda accepted a plea agreement after Marcus, Derek, Elaine, and Celeste Rowland agreed to testify.
She pleaded guilty to multiple charges involving Lily.
She did not plead guilty to Elena’s murder.
That case remained open.
Brenda received a lengthy prison sentence, permanent prohibition from contacting Lily, and forfeiture of assets linked to the conspiracy.
When the sentence was read, she showed no emotion.
Amelia watched from the courtroom gallery.
She did not feel triumphant.
She felt free.
Outside, Lily waited with Grace and Richard.
Amelia lifted her into her arms.
“Is the bad meeting finished?” Lily asked.
“Yes.”
“Can we get ice cream?”
Amelia smiled.
“We can get two.”
Lily gasped.
“That is too many.”
They laughed as they walked toward the car.
For that afternoon, the danger felt over.
The mall report was closed.
The adoption petition was destroyed.
The people who tried to purchase Lily faced consequences.
Elena had been found.
Grace had learned her mother never abandoned her.
The family’s silence had finally broken.
But inside Richard’s car, a sealed package waited on Amelia’s seat.
