Chapter 9 - Midnight at the Rail Terminal

The old Bennett rail terminal had been abandoned since the company moved freight operations west. Its glass roof was broken, and snow drifted across the tracks. Rusted clocks hung above empty platforms, all stopped at 2:14.

The time Vivian's daughter had been born.

Lucy arrived at eleven fifty-eight with Martin. He carried the nursery ledger in a steel case. Lucy carried a duplicate blood card Naomi had created. The real card remained with Scarlett, who had finally revealed its hiding place but refused to surrender it.

Scarlett was not supposed to come.

Lucy knew she would.

At midnight, lights flickered on along Platform 3. A single railway carriage stood beneath the roof, restored and gleaming black. Its door opened.

Adrian Vale stepped down.

He was in his late forties, thin, with silver at his temples and a scar crossing his right cheek. Lucy recognized his eyes from old photographs of Dr. Vale.

"Where is my mother?" Lucy asked.

"Close."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the same answer she gave me for eighteen years."

Martin raised the steel case. "You have the evidence you asked for."

Adrian smiled. "You brought a copy. Naomi Grant trained you better than that."

Armed men emerged from the shadows.

Lucy counted four. Martin's security team and federal agents waited two blocks away, but radio signals had died as soon as they entered the terminal.

Adrian opened the carriage door wider. "Come inside."

The carriage had been converted into an archive. Filing cabinets lined the walls. Maps covered the tables. At the far end sat Rose Carter.

Alive.

Her hair was shorter. Her face was pale but unmistakable. She wore a gray coat and held both hands around a cup of tea.

Lucy stopped breathing.

Rose stood.

"Lucy."

The voice broke every defense Lucy had prepared.

She crossed half the carriage before anger returned. She struck the cup from Rose's hands. It shattered on the floor.

"I buried you."

Rose's eyes filled. "I know."

"You let me."

"I had to disappear."

"You were already dying."

"The diagnosis was false. Adrian arranged it."

Lucy looked at him. "Why?"

Adrian answered calmly. "Because the network planned to kill Rose before your eighteenth birthday. A public death gave her room to move."

"And Helen Ward?"

Rose's face tightened. "Helen was dying. She volunteered. She wanted her death to expose the records later."

"You put her in your coffin."

"Yes."

Lucy could not decide whether to embrace her mother or scream until the roof collapsed.

Martin stepped forward. "Rose."

She looked at him for the first time.

Eighteen years passed between them without a word.

"You look like your father," Rose said.

Martin flinched. "Apparently he was not my father."

"Biology did not make him cruel. Choice did."

"Why did you never contact me?"

"I did. Seven times. Every message brought danger closer to Lucy."

"You could have trusted me."

"You remained in the house that threatened us. You signed papers your father placed before you. You built the company while I changed names and slept with a chair beneath the door. Trust was a luxury I could not afford."

The carriage door opened behind them.

Scarlett entered holding a pistol and the real medical bag.

Adrian's men raised their weapons.

"Put them down," Scarlett said. "Unless you want the blood card destroyed."

Rose stared at her. "Scarlett."

"You know me."

"I know what was done to you."

"Did you help do it?"

Rose looked toward Lucy.

That was answer enough.

Scarlett's face went white. "You chose her."

"I chose to save the child I could reach," Rose said. "When Vivian's baby was taken, I helped Daniel and Evelyn move her. When my own daughter was taken months later, I fought for her too."

"Where is Vivian's real daughter?"

Rose looked at the blood card in Scarlett's hand. "The answer is in that sample."

Scarlett laughed bitterly. "Another test. Another file. Another stranger telling me whether I belong."

Adrian reached for the bag.

Scarlett fired into the ceiling.

Glass rained from the roof.

The terminal erupted in motion. Martin pulled Lucy behind a cabinet. Adrian's men fired toward the platform as federal agents stormed the entrances. Smoke grenades rolled beneath the carriage.

Lucy crawled toward Rose.

A shot struck the wall inches from her shoulder.

Rose seized her hand and dragged her through a hidden panel into the next carriage. Scarlett followed, carrying the bag. Martin came last.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

"You do not understand what Rose has protected," he shouted. "The ledger is not a list of victims. It is a map to the owners of governments."

Rose slammed the panel shut.

The train lurched.

Someone had started the engine.

Through the window, Lucy saw the terminal sliding away, federal lights flashing behind them.

Rose looked toward the front carriage.

"Who is driving?" Martin asked.

May you like

Rose's face filled with fear.

"The person I spent eighteen years hiding Lucy from."
