Chapter 11 - The Price of a Name

Conrad had taken Evelyn from the farm while the others searched the grave. Margaret's security system had recorded nothing. He had entered through a tunnel built beneath the property decades earlier, a route even Margaret had not known existed.
Evelyn's lip was split, but her eyes remained clear.
"Do not give him the ledger," she said.
Conrad rested one gloved hand on her shoulder. "My daughter has always mistaken defiance for strength."
Martin's true sister. Scarlett's possible mother. The words rearranged every relationship in the carriage.
Lucy set the steel case on the floor. "Stop the train first."
"The train is insurance."
"Then the ledger is mine."
Conrad looked pleased. "You bargain naturally. That comes from Eleanor. She built the trust to protect blood from men like me. She failed to understand that blood can be moved, renamed, and taught gratitude."
"You replaced Martin because you wanted a son."
"I wanted an heir I could control. His birth mother owed me money. His father was never recorded. I placed him in my wife's arms and removed Evelyn from the house before dawn. My wife believed the daughter died."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"And Scarlett?" Lucy asked.
"Vivian wanted her own daughter removed because the child carried a genetic condition that could become public. I needed Evelyn's infant hidden. One exchange solved both matters."
Scarlett had been punished all her life for being a replacement, though she had never known it. Vivian's coldness, Martin's distance, the pressure to perform perfectly, the obsession with worth. Lucy understood suddenly that Scarlett's cruelty had been trained in the same house that had trained silence into Martin.
"Where is Vivian's real daughter?" Rose asked.
Conrad's smile faded. "An unnecessary loose end."
Rose lunged.
Conrad struck her with the back of his hand. Lucy moved before thinking, driving the injector toward his neck. He caught her wrist. Despite his age, his grip was iron.
"Rose taught you courage," he said. "She neglected patience."
Lucy dropped the injector.
Conrad kicked it beneath the control panel.
The route display showed four minutes to the broken bridge.
"Open the case," he ordered.
Lucy knelt. Inside lay the nursery ledger and a thin black folder Naomi had hidden beneath it. Conrad saw only the ledger.
"Slide it to me."
"Release Evelyn."
"Names are expensive, Lucy. Hers cost me an empire. Yours may save one."
"You do not own an empire anymore."
"Bennett International is a storefront. The real holdings are hospitals, banks, judges, adoption agencies, laboratories, and identities. The ledger connects them. Without it, powerful people remain loyal to me because they fear what I can prove. With it, I can remind them."
Lucy opened the cover.
A red light blinked inside the spine.
Naomi's tracker had activated.
Conrad noticed.
His expression changed for the first time.
He struck a switch. Metal shutters covered the engine windows. The speaker system died.
"You brought federal agents onto my train."
"They were already following it."
"The bridge will handle them too."
He reached for the emergency speed control.
Rose grabbed his arm. Evelyn threw her bound chair sideways into his legs. Lucy seized the injector from beneath the panel and drove it into his shoulder.
Conrad roared and shoved her into the wall.
The engine controls flashed. The throttle remained locked at full speed.
Two minutes.
The door burst open. Martin and Scarlett entered together. Martin tackled Conrad. Scarlett fired at the control lock, shattering the metal casing.
"Brake line is manual," Evelyn shouted. "Under the floor panel."
Lucy and Rose pulled the panel open. A red lever lay beneath spinning gears.
Scarlett dropped beside them. "It needs two people."
They gripped the lever together and pulled.
Nothing happened.
The train thundered toward the river. Through a gap in the shutters, Lucy saw the unfinished bridge ahead.
Martin held Conrad against the wall while the sedative weakened him.
"Again," Scarlett said.
Lucy pulled until pain tore through her shoulders. Rose joined them. The lever moved an inch.
Brakes screamed beneath the cars.
The engine shuddered. Sparks flew past the windows.
The end of the bridge rushed closer.
Conrad laughed through clenched teeth. "Even if you stop it, the network survives."
The train crossed onto the bridge.
One car reached the unfinished section and dropped. Couplings snapped. The engine twisted sideways, metal shrieking against rail.
Then it stopped.
The front wheels hung over empty air.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Scarlett began laughing. It was not elegant or controlled. It was the shocked laughter of someone who had expected death and found breath instead.
Lucy laughed too.
Conrad did not.
Federal agents reached the engine minutes later. Naomi placed him in handcuffs herself.
As they led him away, he looked at Lucy.
"Ask Rose who signed the first transfer order."
Rose went still.
Lucy turned toward her mother.
"What does he mean?"
Rose looked at the river below.
"He means the first child listed in the ledger was moved before Conrad controlled the network."
"Who signed it?"
May you like
Rose's voice was barely audible.
"Eleanor Bennett."
