Chapter 8 - The Grave That Held No Mother

Lucy did not remember leaving the farmhouse.

She remembered snow under her shoes, Martin calling her name, and Scarlett catching her before she fell beside the car. She remembered the photograph in her fist and the date stamped across the corner.

Three weeks after the funeral.

Rose had been thin in the final months. Cancer had hollowed her cheeks and weakened her voice. Lucy had sat beside her hospice bed, washed her hair, counted her breaths, and watched the heart monitor flatten. She had identified the body. She had chosen the blue dress for the burial.

There could not be a photograph.

Unless every part of the death had been arranged.

Naomi ordered the grave opened that evening.

The cemetery lights threw long shadows across frozen ground. Lucy stood between Martin and Scarlett as workers raised the coffin. No one spoke when the lid was removed.

The woman inside wore Rose's blue dress.

But she was not Rose.

Dental records later identified her as Helen Ward, the nurse supposedly dead since 2018.

Lucy stared through the glass wall of the forensic room while Naomi explained that hospice records, death certificates, and cremation permits had all been falsified by the same network they were investigating.

"Why would my mother fake her death?"

"Protection," Martin said.

Lucy turned on him. "Do not defend her."

"I am not."

"She let me bury another woman. She watched me grieve."

"We do not know whether she had a choice."

"That excuse seems popular in this family."

Scarlett sat against the opposite wall. "She may have believed you were safer if everyone thought she was dead."

Lucy looked at her sharply.

Scarlett shrugged. "I am trying not to be the worst person in the room. It is new for me."

The small honesty weakened Lucy's anger for a moment.

Margaret told them Rose had arrived at the farm eight weeks before the gala. She was ill but walking. She asked to see the identity files and spent two nights copying records. On the third morning, she left with a man Margaret knew only as Adrian.

Evelyn reacted to the name.

"Adrian Vale," she said. "Son of Dr. Thomas Vale, the physician who ran Mariner House. Adrian was a junior accountant at Bennett International. He vanished after his father died."

Naomi searched old financial records. Adrian Vale had created Closed Door Holdings, moved money through seven charities, and quietly purchased abandoned properties connected to the infant transfers. For two decades, he appeared to be preserving evidence.

Or collecting leverage.

A message arrived on Lucy's phone from an unknown number.

YOU OPENED THE WRONG GRAVE.

A second message followed with a photograph of Rose sitting in a railway station that morning. She held today's newspaper. Beside her stood a man whose face had been scratched out.

Lucy called the number.

A distorted voice answered.

"Your mother is alive."

"Let me speak to her."

"Not yet."

"What do you want?"

"The ledger from the nursery and the blood card from Mariner House."

Lucy glanced at Naomi. The prosecutor signaled for the call to continue.

"The bag was lost in the ocean."

"No. Scarlett Bennett recovered it before the rescue team arrived."

Every eye turned toward Scarlett.

She did not deny it.

"I found the bag in the cave," Scarlett said. "I hid it beneath a rock."

Lucy stared. "Why?"

"Because it was the only thing in this nightmare that belonged to me."

The distorted voice laughed softly. "At midnight tomorrow, bring the ledger and the blood card to the old Bennett rail terminal. Come with Martin. No police. No Evelyn."

"And Rose?"

"She will tell you why she chose Scarlett before she chose you."

The call ended.

Lucy turned toward Scarlett.

"Where is the bag?"

Scarlett stood. "Somewhere Martin cannot take it."

"This is not about inheritance."

"Everything in this family becomes inheritance."

Martin stepped between them. "Scarlett, give us the card."

"You said you believed evidence. I decided to keep some."

She walked away.

Lucy followed her into the corridor. "You heard what he said. My mother is alive."

Scarlett stopped at the elevator.

"And if she is the one who arranged my life? If she knew who I was and still left me with Vivian?"

"Then we ask her together."

Scarlett looked at Lucy for a long moment.

"You still think blood makes you brave," she said. "It does not. Sometimes it only gives people a new way to own you."

The elevator doors opened.

Inside stood one of Martin's security guards, unconscious against the wall.
