Chapter 8 - The Gun He Never Intended to Fire

Marcus stood in the study doorway.

The pistol remained lowered.

Not pointed directly at Adriana.

Not yet.

Rain hammered against the tall windows overlooking the gardens.

The antique globe lay open on the Persian rug.

Inside it, the three-sided steel object rested in Adriana's trembling hand.

Detective Pike reacted instantly.

His service weapon cleared the holster.

"Drop the gun!"

Marcus didn't move.

Two uniformed officers rushed toward the study from opposite directions.

Marcus raised his free hand slightly.

"I'm not here to shoot anyone."

Pike's voice stayed calm.

"Then put it on the floor."

Marcus looked only at Adriana.

"You found it."

She stared back.

"You knew I would."

"I hoped you wouldn't."

"You've been waiting fourteen years."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I've been trying to stop fourteen years of mistakes."

Adriana laughed bitterly.

"Forgery."

Silence.

"Murder."

Silence.

"Identity theft."

Silence.

"And somehow I'm supposed to believe you're the victim?"

Marcus finally looked at Pike.

"I'll surrender the weapon."

"Slowly."

Marcus bent.

Placed the pistol on the hardwood floor.

Stepped backward.

An officer immediately kicked it away.

Pike never lowered his own weapon.

"Hands behind your head."

Marcus complied.

The handcuffs clicked into place.

For the first time since Adriana had known him, Marcus looked...tired.

Not frightened.

Not defeated.

Simply exhausted.

As officers escorted him toward the foyer, he stopped beside Adriana.

His voice was barely audible.

"You don't know what that key opens."

She held up the steel object.

"Then tell me."

Marcus looked directly into her eyes.

"If you use it..."

He hesitated.

"...people you think are dead won't stay buried."

Before Adriana could answer, officers led him away.

The front door slammed.

Silence returned.

Only the rain remained.

Pike exhaled slowly.

"I'll have him questioned immediately."

Adriana nodded absently.

Her attention remained on the strange steel key.

Elena picked it up carefully with an evidence cloth.

Three engraved faces.

Three different grooves.

No teeth.

No markings except tiny letters.

N.

S.

H.

North.

South.

Home.

Exactly as carved beneath the jewelry drawer.

Cho arrived thirty minutes later carrying portable scanning equipment.

He examined the object under magnification.

"It isn't a conventional key."

"What is it?" Adriana asked.

"It looks like a mechanical authentication device."

"For what?"

"No idea."

He rotated it.

Tiny magnets responded beneath the surface.

"There are moving components inside."

"A puzzle?"

"Possibly."

He paused.

"Or one-third of something larger."

Everyone looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Cho zoomed into one edge.

"The metal was designed to interlock."

"With another key?"

"Probably two others."

May you like

Three.

Again.
