Chapter 2 - The Account That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist

Adriana arrived at Elena Ward’s office forty minutes before the courthouse hearing.
The office occupied the twenty-second floor of a downtown tower overlooking the river.
Normally the waiting room felt sterile.
That morning it felt like a bunker.
Elena met her at the door.
“You brought the note?”
Adriana handed over a plastic sleeve containing the paper.
Elena did not touch it directly.
“Where was it?”
“Refrigerator.”
“When?”
“After Marcus left.”
“Could he have placed it there?”
“Maybe.”
“But?”
“It doesn’t make sense.”
Elena read the message again.
DO NOT LET MARCUS KNOW YOU FOUND STERLING MERIDIAN.
Then the number.
3.
Elena frowned.
“What does three mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“Third account?”
“That’s what I thought.”
“Third person?”
“Maybe.”
“Three million?”
Adriana gave her a look.
“That would be comforting.”
Elena almost smiled.
Then her expression changed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Elena.”
The attorney carried the note to her desk.
“I received something this morning.”
Adriana felt a chill.
“What?”
Elena opened her laptop.
An email.
No sender name.
No message body.
One attachment.
SM_DISCLOSURE.pdf
“I haven’t opened it.”
“Why not?”
“Because anonymous attachments are how lawyers spend afternoons explaining ransomware to IT departments.”
Adriana sat opposite her.
“So what now?”
“I forwarded it to our forensic consultant.”
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
As though summoned, Elena’s phone rang.
She answered.
“Ward.”
A man spoke rapidly on the other end.
Elena listened.
Her eyes moved toward Adriana.
“All right.”
Pause.
“You’re sure?”
Another pause.
“Send me screenshots only. Don’t forward the file.”
She hung up.
Adriana waited.
“Well?”
“It’s clean.”
“And?”
“The attachment contains corporate formation documents.”
“For what?”
Elena turned the laptop.
“MBS Strategic Holdings.”
Adriana leaned closer.
The entity had been created three years earlier.
Registered agent:
Calder Rowe Corporate Services.
Managing member:
Marcus B. Brooks.
Adriana exhaled.
“That’s enough.”
“For that account, yes.”
“What about Sterling Meridian?”
“There’s more.”
Elena scrolled.
A diagram appeared.
MBS Strategic Holdings LLC.
Arrow.
Marlowe Continental Investments.
Arrow.
Sterling Meridian Trust.
Arrow.
Three blank subsidiary boxes.
Adriana stared.
“What are those?”
“I don’t know.”
“Three.”
Elena looked at the handwritten note.
Then at the screen.
“Yes.”
The same number.
Three.
Adriana felt suddenly cold.
“Who sent the email?”
“Untraceable so far.”
“Could Serena?”
“Possibly.”
“Why would she help me?”
“She might not be.”
Adriana frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means information can be bait.”
“For what?”
“To make you react.”
Adriana leaned back.
“Elena, somebody knows what we found last night.”
“Yes.”
“And somebody knew before Marcus did.”
“Maybe.”
“Who?”
Elena closed the laptop.
“That is now a question for later.”
“No. That’s a question for now.”
“We have court in twenty-eight minutes.”
“Exactly.”
Elena studied her.
“Adriana, listen carefully. Today we do one thing. We prevent you from signing an unfair agreement and put Marcus’s financial disclosures under scrutiny. We do not accuse him of crimes we cannot prove. We do not mention anonymous notes unless necessary. We do not reveal Sterling Meridian unless strategically appropriate.”
“But the judge needs to know.”
“The judge needs admissible evidence.”
“The statements are evidence.”
“They are a beginning.”
Adriana hated how rational that sounded.
“What about Serena?”
“What about her?”
“I have the text.”
“Useful for motive. Less useful financially.”
“She was waiting for the divorce.”
“Yes.”
“And Marcus was sleeping with her.”
“Probably.”
Adriana looked away.
Probably.
Even now that word hurt.
Elena noticed.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.”
“You’re allowed to be hurt.”
“Not today.”
Elena nodded.
“Fair enough.”
They arrived at the courthouse at 9:03.
That was when Marcus held out the divorce papers.
That was when Adriana raised the folder.
That was when his confidence cracked.
And that was when the anonymous messages reached Marcus.
YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE DEAL.
SHE KNOWS ABOUT ACCOUNT 3.
Adriana did not see them.
But Preston Vale did.
Marcus immediately angled the phone away.
Too late.
“Problem?” Preston whispered.
“No.”
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“I said no.”
Judge Holloway’s clerk called them inside.
The courtroom was smaller than Adriana expected.
Dark wood.
Cream walls.
No jury.
Only the judge, the clerk, a court reporter, both attorneys, and two people whose marriage had collapsed into exhibits.
Judge Marion Holloway entered.
Everyone stood.
She sat.
“Good morning.”
The preliminary proceedings were routine.
Names.
Representation.
Case number.
Pending settlement discussions.
Then Preston Vale rose.
“Your Honor, we believed the parties had substantially reached agreement.”
Elena stood.
“We dispute that characterization.”
Preston smiled politely.
“My understanding was that only execution remained.”
“My client has not executed anything.”
Judge Holloway glanced over her glasses.
“Then there is no agreement.”
Marcus shifted.
Preston continued.
“We believe Mrs. Brooks may be attempting to reopen settled financial issues based on information obtained improperly.”
Elena did not react.
Judge Holloway looked at her.
“Counsel?”
“We recently discovered material inconsistencies in Mr. Brooks’s sworn disclosures.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Preston stood straighter.
“What inconsistencies?”
Elena opened the gray folder.
“An investment account holding approximately three hundred eighty-six thousand dollars owned through an LLC controlled by Mr. Brooks.”
Preston looked at Marcus.
Then Elena continued.
“A second investment account containing approximately two hundred twenty-five thousand dollars.”
Judge Holloway’s expression changed.
“Were these disclosed?”
“No, Your Honor.”
Preston raised a hand.
“We have not authenticated these documents.”
Elena nodded.
“Which is why we request limited expedited discovery.”
“On what basis?”
“Potential concealment of marital assets.”
Marcus whispered something to Preston.
The attorney’s face tightened.
Judge Holloway looked directly at Marcus.
“Mr. Brooks, did you file a sworn financial affidavit?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“Did that affidavit identify all assets held directly or indirectly by you?”
Marcus hesitated.
Preston stepped forward.
“Your Honor, I would advise my client not to answer substantively until we review the alleged documents.”
The judge’s expression cooled.
“I asked whether he filed the affidavit.”
“Yes.”
“And whether it required disclosure of directly or indirectly held assets.”
“Yes.”
Judge Holloway turned to Elena.
“Submit your exhibits.”
Elena handed the statements to the clerk.
Marcus stared at Adriana.
She could almost feel the fury crossing the room.
The judge reviewed the pages.
“Mr. Vale?”
Preston requested ten minutes.
The judge granted it.
They moved into the hallway.
Marcus immediately approached Adriana.
Elena stepped between them.
“Communicate through counsel.”
Marcus ignored her.
“Where did you get those?”
Adriana remained silent.
“You think you understand what you’re looking at?”
Silence.
“Those are corporate funds.”
Elena spoke.
“Then your client can establish that through discovery.”
Marcus’s eyes never left Adriana.
“You went into my office.”
“Our office,” Adriana said.
“You had no right.”
“I had every right to household tax records.”
His nostrils flared.
Then he leaned closer.
“Do you know what you’ve done?”
Adriana almost answered.
A woman’s voice interrupted.
“Marcus?”
All four turned.
Serena Collins stood near the security checkpoint.
Adriana recognized her instantly from photographs.
Thirty-four.
Long brown hair.
Camel coat.
Black heels.
She looked sophisticated.
And terrified.
Marcus’s face changed.
“What are you doing here?”
Serena approached quickly.
“You weren’t answering.”
“This isn’t the place.”
“I need to talk to you.”
“Go home.”
Serena looked at Adriana.
Their eyes met for the first time.
There was no smugness.
No triumph.
Only panic.
Adriana expected anger.
Instead Serena said, “You need to ask him about Meridian.”
Marcus grabbed Serena’s arm.
“Stop.”
Elena immediately said, “Remove your hand.”
Serena pulled free.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No.”
“You told me it was finished.”
Marcus looked toward the courtroom door.
“Serena.”
“You said after she signed, everything moved.”
Adriana felt Elena go still beside her.
“What moved?” Adriana asked.
Serena looked at Marcus.
He stared at her with naked warning.
Serena swallowed.
“The ownership.”
“Of what?”
“Don’t,” Marcus said.
Serena ignored him.
“The Briarwood property.”
Adriana blinked.
“My house?”
“Not exactly.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“You need to leave.”
Serena’s eyes filled.
“You lied to me.”
Adriana almost laughed at the absurdity.
The mistress accusing the husband of dishonesty.
But Serena was shaking.
“This isn’t about us,” Serena said.
Marcus whispered, “Shut your mouth.”
Elena took out her phone.
“I’m documenting this conversation.”
Preston looked horrified.
“Everyone stop talking.”
Serena turned to Adriana.
“He wasn’t trying to get the house.”
Adriana frowned.
“Then what?”
“He needed your signature.”
“For the divorce.”
“No.”
Serena looked directly at her.
“For the trust.”
Silence.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Just once.
That was enough.
Adriana’s heartbeat thundered.
“What trust?”
Serena whispered, “Sterling Meridian.”
Marcus lunged toward her.
Not violently.
But fast enough that a courthouse deputy immediately stepped between them.
“Sir.”
Marcus stopped.
Serena stepped backward.
The deputy looked around.
“Is there a problem?”
Preston answered.
“No.”
Elena answered at the same time.
“Potentially.”
The courtroom clerk opened the door.
“Brooks case. Judge is ready.”
Everyone froze.
Serena backed away.
Marcus stared at her.
“What did you send?”
Serena shook her head.
“I didn’t send anything.”
His expression changed again.
Adriana saw it.
He believed her.
Which meant whoever left the note...
Whoever emailed Elena...
Was someone else.
Serena walked toward the elevators.
Then stopped.
She turned to Adriana.
“There are three beneficiaries.”
Marcus went pale.
Serena continued.
“You’re one.”
The elevator opened.
She stepped inside.
Adriana called after her.
“Who are the other two?”
Serena looked at Marcus.
Then at Adriana.
The doors began closing.
May you like
“One of them is dead.”
The doors shut.
