Chapter 12 - Evelyn's Final Promise

They sat inside the abandoned chapel.
Margaret spoke for nearly two hours.
Twenty-four years earlier, she and Evelyn Hart had built a medical software company from nothing.
After selling it, they created Sterling Meridian.
Not merely as a trust.
As a safeguard.
"The money was never the important part," Margaret said.
"What was?"
Margaret looked directly at Adriana.
"The research."
"What research?"
"Evelyn discovered accounting fraud during the acquisition."
Adriana frowned.
"Accounting fraud?"
"It began that way."
Margaret removed a worn leather notebook from her coat.
Inside were old newspaper clippings.
Corporate reports.
Handwritten notes.
"There were shell companies."
Adriana immediately recognized the pattern.
"MBS."
Margaret nodded.
"Years before Marcus ever used those initials."
She continued.
"Charles Rowe wasn't stealing from investors."
"He was stealing companies."
Adriana blinked.
"How?"
"He located businesses with valuable patents or hidden assets."
"He manipulated ownership."
"He replaced directors."
"He forged signatures."
"He bankrupted founders."
Margaret looked down.
"Evelyn found proof."
"And Marcus?"
"He wasn't Marcus."
"I know."
"He was Daniel Vale."
Margaret's voice became colder.
"He was Charles Rowe's most talented recruit."
Adriana looked away.
"So our marriage..."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"It wasn't fate."
"It was planned."
The words hurt more than Adriana expected.
"Did he ever love me?"
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
May you like
Finally she said,
"I honestly don't know."
